Did Lucasfilm steal from the soundtrack of The Ten Commandments for ROTJ? because the opening horns/trumpets from the track "The Exodus" sounds suspiciously like some Ewoks trumpets right before the funeral pyre scene in ROTJ

Posted

listen to the opening of the exodus, they sound just like the sound effect for the ewok victory trumpets/horns

oh and Zimmer borrowed from TTC for The Prince of Egypt

I didn't think the Ewok shofar call in note-for-note, tone-for-tone the same performance as in The Ten Commandments, but how many times to the Ewoks sound that call? As far as I remember, just the call that sounds the Ewoks to battle when C3PO "surrenders." Maybe there are more times, I'm not sure, I watched ROTJ to death years ago and don't want to watch it again.

But borrowing musical ideas from one movie about Moses for another movie about Moses -- a children's cartoon to boot -- made 40 years later is A-OK in my book. It's called "homage."

John Williams did the same thing when he "stole" from Ben-Hur for The Phantom Menace's Ben-Hur moment.

Where did he do that?

The tapping on the Main Title part of 'Commando's 'Prologue/Main Title'. Is that a timing thing? It sounds like it, I just heard it while listening to my headphones today and it's really distracting. At first I thought someone was tapping along nearby, but then I realised no one else could hear.

the theme at 4:08 is what i am referring to i believe it plays also when Ramses and Moses are racing chariots

and from TTC: from about 1:32:

I believe its Lilia's Theme,

Pretty close, although Zimmer develops it a bit differently in TPOE--I believe it's his theme for Ramses.

As to the two Hook things--yeah, those are about the closest, most legitimates cases of lifting by Williams I've heard. "Mountain Dance" is especially close, like a sonic template for "Banning Back Home," although Williams absolutely fills in that template with his own thing. The thing I notice about both is that, even as close as they are cases of instrumentation, and sometimes even things like countermelody, not only does he make his own main material, but he often changes the character of the pieces in both cases. And they are certainly distinct enough for me to continue enjoying the Williams, the Delerue, and the Grusin each on its own merit.

I thought it was more of a Danger Motif/Theme

Why does the Star Wars Anthology set sound so much better than the RCA releases? It doesn't make any sense to me. If I could have the sound quality and mix of the Anthology set (or better) with the sequencing, content, and choice of specific takes that we got in the RCA releases, I would just die of happiness.

That was ESB, with Brian Risner. Star Wars sounds awesome, better than the Anthology (which I believe also has some incorrect takes). I'd like to know what masters were used for ROTJ, as they were clearly better than the SE version. I remember hearing somewhere that Jedi's tapes were lost, but I don't believe that considering how anal LFL are about collecting every single thing. If they have Sy Snootles' toenails, they have the masters somewhere.

Wait, are you saying Star Wars sounds better on the RCA release than on the Anthology? I definitely disagree with that. There's something exciting (and for me, nostalgic) about the harsh tone of the RCA, but it all sounds so much clearer and well-balanced on the Anthology. I do notice the incorrect takes, though, because some of them are significantly worse than the correct takes that I'm used to hearing.

Isn't this from one of Kunzel conducted compilations from Telarc?

Yes.

And Williams had nothing to do with this.

I think the Empire and Jedi albums sound even better than the Anthology. Empire's album mix kicks ass. Jedi is a revelation. But I know you hate album versions.

Really? I haven't listened to the ESB and ROTJ OSTs. Man...it's strange how the sound quality has just gotten worse with successive releases. I really hope these get a new release eventually.

As for hating album versions, it really depends. With a lot of Williams scores, I'm a completist, simply because if it's a Williams score that I like, there's usually not much music in it that I don't like. I'm also more interested in film scores themselves than in soundtrack albums. This is very, very true in the case of the Star Wars scores. Even though I grew up with the original ANH LP, I still vastly prefer the complete RCA presentation. But I wouldn't say I hate all album versions, period. Some scores are just too much in their complete form. So what I really like is when there's a complete release and an abridged release - I'll buy the complete release, but also make an abridged playlist if I just want a quicker, less tedious listen.

Just not with Star Wars scores. ;)

Was the following version of Kamen's superb Robin Hood theme arranged by Williams?

The arrangement for that version on Erich Kunzel's The Great Fantasy Adventure Album was done by Mark McGurty.

Thanks! That album has a very interesting tracklist... I'll have to check it out...

It's the first album where I heard anything from El Cid. And a very good one. Get it if you have a chance.

What is the difference between the 3:34 long film version of The Lost World theme and the 3:35 long album version?

Posted

In the film, it begins with "End Credit Intro", which is an alternate intro with more than just the percussion.

I don't know, but I used to have a lovely poster of that. It was a promotional poster that you could redeem by sending in UPCs from Cheerios cereal.

This may sound like a silly question, but it's been bugging me for 35 years, or so.

In "The Towering Inferno", where has Doug Roberts just returned from?

What does Jim Duncan mean by saying "no matter how hot it gets up there during the day, there's not a damn thing to do at night".? Where is he refering to?

I want to say somewhere in the middle east or Southern Europe, but I don't recall a definite answer.

[Duncan is talking about Roberts' unemployment after the Tower job]

James Duncan: You know, there's a saying that goes "No matter how hot it gets up there during the day...

James Duncan, Doug Roberts: [in unison] There isn't a damn thing you can do at night."

James Duncan: That's right. Now what the hell are you going to do at night in the middle of nowhere?

Doug Roberts: Sleep like a winner.

I've checked up on an answer to this every now and then, and can never find one, so I'll try here:

Anyone know what this piece of music is (first 30 seconds or so):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-vPNCfms6k

I can't remember the last time an Oscar ceremony used a particular musical piece so frequently throughout the ceremony, and I was never able to figure out what the damn thing was. Is it from a movie, TV show, original for the ceremony, what? Did anybody ever happen to figure that out?

Posted

Were the bonus tracks for David Arnold's Casino Royale ever released anywhere losslessly?

How about Michael Giacchino's Roar!?

I don't recognize it, sorry.

I've never heard of Roar being released losslessly.

Yeah mine is only 256kbps.

What about the bonus Casino Royale cues? Did those come out anywhere except iTunes?

I've only seen them on iTunes but since I already had the original album I wasn't going to double dip that quickly. I only bought the title song off of iTunes.

Anyone know where I can buy jewel cases to replace cracked and broken ones? I can only seem to find those crappy thin ones made of cheap plastic and for some reason with rainbow colors. I would prefer it if the trays were clear plastic as well, not the matte black trays.

Posted

Best Buy used to carry them. ;)

My serious suggestion would be to look online. I had the link to one place but I can't remember the name of it.

Best Buy sucks :P

I found a website that has all types of cases for CDs, Blus, and DVDs. $25 for 50 cases, which isn't too bad, but the $8 commercial shipping is killer. I decided to add an extra $2 and get residential ground. I trust UPS with a package like this over USPS. It's be ironic if they all arrived cracked and broken

Here's the link if anyone else is interested: http://www.sleevetown.com/

Didn't somebody post a link once to a site that was giving the first case away for 1 cent (including shipping)?

Heh, that was the site I was referring to, I just couldn't remember their name.

I bought a huge case of clear jewel cases when Circuit City was going out of business, there are over 50 in there and they are the sturdy ones.
