WOW!  What a concert!!!  That's my wife and me in the middle with the blue shirt, behind the really tall guy (who kept accidentally blocking my view of JW....)---- Johnny is looking right at me.  Awesome picture and amazing night.  The highlights for me were Memoirs of a Geisha, Adventures on Earth, and Han Solo & the Princess.

JW hilariously had a slipup and started to call the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra the Boston Symphony Orchestra ---- the crowd let him have it, and he then followed up with a comment about how he will have a really tough time returning to Boston after throwing the opening pitch at the Baltimore Orioles game.  Half the fun of attending a JW concert is getting these fun stories in between brilliant performances.

I had a great time at the concert last night! This was my second time seeing Williams live (the first being Lexington, Kentucky, in February 2014), and he was just as lively and exciting now as he was then. I'm so glad I was able to attend!

I was sad that they didn't play "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra," but I loved getting to hear "The Adventures of Han" and the new "Han Solo and the Princess" arrangement live. Such wonderful pieces!

I went to the concert too! Absolutely loved Adventures of Han (when am I ever going to hear that live again? Probably never)!! E.T. and Shark Cage Fugue were also incredible! I loved that we got Williams pieces from all three of the new movies he's done. And the Throne Room . . . incredible. I loved that they used the Revenge of the Sith end credits Throne Room suite; that's always been my favorite end credits suite of all time. I actually teared up during those moving renditions of the B section of the Throne Room; it was so emotional and well-played. Agggh! Why can't he do five more of these performances in Baltimore before he leaves? I need to attend more film music concerts.

That original program I posted ended up being the actual program.  The first half concluded with Rey/RiR/Finale from Star Wars conducted by Marin.  The second half of the concert concluded with Adventures On Earth conducted by Williams.  The only change was that Scherzo for Motorcycle was dropped and the Adventures Of Han opened the second half of the program.  I'd have rather heard Scherzo for Motorcycle, I was excited to hear that live.  The encores were Han Solo And The Princess, To Lenny (conducted by Marin Alsop) and the Imperial March.  The Memoirs Of A Geisha suite was freaking amazing.  I have new appreciation for that score after seeing it live.

Can't believe we get to experience this again 5 years after JW last visited Baltimore.......I have the exact same seats as last time.......4th row orchestra, a little in from the aisle on the left side ---- perfect for getting the intimate sound and having a good angle on the Maestro, being less than 20 ft from him.

His Baltimore concert in 2013 was electric ---- best concert that I have ever attended (and I've attended such ones as him conducting half the concert at Tanglewood last year).   Would there be any way to get a recording of that concert?

I'm contemplating the post-concert reception, but the fee is so very high...................can anyone recommend this event from past experience at other concerts that had post-concert VIP sessions with JW?

Is THIS to be recorded in LA also, in "pieces parts?"

And if it IS, then WHY does "Modern Technology" PRETEND to know WHAT it's "talking about" in terms of an "orchestra" or WTF?

THE FORCE AWAKENS was recorded with an LA Orchestra. And IT was met with derision and rightfully SO!

I mean, YOU have ALL this money to spend on the VISUALS, yet, hey "I love LA!!!"

YET , the producers of such, in THIS day and age, could NOT come up with an appropriate "REVERB" setting to at least TRY to approximate the legendary
LSO's recordings of PREVIOUS STAR WARS recordings?

I can FAKE the LSO, with just my TINY KIT!

And through ALL of this, WE want to go to MARS???????

We don't have the money, or the inspiration........F*ck MARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And really FUCK DISNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I don't CARE anymore!

Its not just written in a similar style, it uses the same beat, and yet is too busy for its own good and in its concert arrangement the main melody is obscured by too many bells and whistles for the first minute or so. The cue wants to be the Imperial March without quoting it but comes off like a Spaceballs version of Star Wars music, especially towards the end of the suite cue. I think Gia continues to struggle with big cues. Everything is either too over the top, straining, or just not communicating a whole lot. For example, in the suite cue, after the initial rush of brass and percussion the music goes quiet with just strings (almost like the b section of the theme) but the music accomplishes nothing when it goes quiet. I think the form is trying to mirror the Imperial March concert arrangement where the main motif is carried by strings while the rest of the orchestra slowly comes back into play but in that case the strings play to a fast rhythm and act as a fun bridge between big statements of the Imperial March motif.

The New Imperial March is characteristic of Gia's thematic writing where he struggles with clear melodic identification. The theme doesn't have that effortless or inevitable quality that JW often talks about and I think its in the main motif itself and its progression. Its definitely bad guy music but again comes across as corny, particularly in its concert suite cue.

I think you (accidentally) nailed it.

The March of The Resistance was written by JW for the use in a Star Wars score. That, by its very definition, makes it more Star Wars than anything any composer could ever contribute to Star Wars, imo.

The thing is. Unlike Star Trek, Bond etc which has had many composers over the years. For me Star Wars music has only ever been associated with a single person, a single musical voice.

Star Wars is John Williams, even more then it is George Lucas (again IMO).
I'm not sure a film carrying the SW name but not a score by JW will ever truly be a Star Wars film. Even if it will be better than the Prequels (and it will be hard to make films that are worse)
