I'm not saying this as a comparison to Rogue One (as I don't remember anything about that score except his scoring the big Vader slaughter at the end), but I like that Powell saves the big popular Star Wars themes for near the end (probably hinted at before for all I know, but L3 and the Millenium Falcon is when he finally fully grants a cameo). Just feels more earned and satisfying that way getting to that point.

It’s a great lesson for young people in any situation. Stop copying. Whether it’s copying other people’s music, photos, drawings, programs, lifestyles, choices, opinions, just stop. Think for yourself. Learn from others and from the past, but don’t try to be others or relive the past.
Heed Williams’ words. It won’t guarantee you’ll succeed and become John Williams. But it will guarantee that you will wake up every day with a hunger for life, whatever it throws at you. The worst thing you can do to your life is being dead inside.

I wonder if J. Williams also feels Giacchino's better for Jurassic than Star Wars, considering Giacchino's doing Fallen Kingdom and all.
He certainly made Jurassic more his own than Rogue One.

Nonsense. They look great, pinnacle of 80s design. Which is in right now anyway.

Oh, by the way, another quote from Powell on Williams' instructions (from the said interview): "Don't be so honourable to the material. Do your own thing. I'm interested to see what you'll do with it. I'm interested to see what you can add to it. The sounds I don't do, the things I don't do, the way I don't do it."

Giacchino must be crying in a corner right about now.

Mr. Anderson.
There is no spoon.
Free your mind.
Guns lots of guns.
I know Kong Fu.
Welcome to the real world.
Goodbye, Mr. Anderson.
You've been living in the dream world, Neo.
You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
The Matrix is a system Neo. That system is our enemy.
If you are not one of us, you are one of them.
Dodge this.

Oh so Williams actually wanted a modern sounding score. That's pretty cool to learn. I bet as an artist he's fascinated with all the modern toys that contemporary composers use.
To be honest, this hot-headed probably bit too over-eager take on the old material sits well with the younger incarnation of Solo.
Karol
It's tough to be creative and not fascinated by whats new. Time is your limiting factor, not curiosity. Despite his repeated statements that he just hasn't had time to dabble in the new stuff, people still like to project that Williams has an ideological opposition to new techniques.

It pleases me to no end that John Williams sees the need to release those who will follow him from the need to ape his style.
Powell has succeeded at what he set out to do, and what Williams wanted him to do. This is a great Star Wars score, rooted in the franchise's rich musical tradition and yet different enough to help the franchise evolve.
It's just right. It's not too far out. It keeps what works, sheds what's anachronistic, and brings just enough of individual voice to work and work well.

Then you truly are lost!

The Star Wars Prequels.

Han's theme feels nondescript. If it were any other hero's theme I'd be disappointed. But the ambiguity works for Han, rather well actually.

The Koss KSC75 can best be described as:
$300 sound for $9. No amp needed. Absolutely portable. Completely Comfortable. Durable. Fantastic warranty. Despite all the money I've spent on other headphones, I come back to them again and again. If anyone is ever unsure of where to start in audiophile headphones, these are it. You simply cannot go wrong unless you're starving to death and it's your last $9. In which case you should buy some high calorie food.
Anyways, Koss recently released wireless versions of the KSC75's bigger, bassier, darker PortaPro:
Bought? Yes, will let you know how it goes.

I mean, he went full RCP in Munich. What a terrible score.

I bet if this exact album said Composed and Conducted by John Williams the naysayers couldn't stop coming.... and coming.... and coming.
Yep, they’d be praising how well Williams modernized Star Wars, and how refreshing it was to see him try something new.
I mean how many of us came hard for “No Man’s Land” in War Horse for those very same reasons?

No, because percussion used by John Williams is pure. Percussion used by Powell (with old links to RCP) is impure.

Yeah fuck those fuckers who form an opinion based on their reaction to something. I shouldn't stop eating a food if I don't like the taste of it. Instead, I should just keep eating it more and more before forming an opinion on it...
Yeah those food people are FRIs too. Children are particularly idiotic in this domain. If you don’t like spinach, it doesn’t mean you won’t like spanakopita. But FRI are ideologically opposed to the very concept of spinach, so they eat the spanakopita with the drive to hate it because it has spinach. They react to the concept rather than the real thing in front of them.

There is nothing engaging debating people who have an ideological stance. Sorry.
If you’ve decided that music with a beat is bad, then there is nothing to engage with you on.

What a wonderful score. Well done Mr. Powell.
1 hour ago, TGP said:Good grief, what is all this about RCP percussion (which I assume means low but boosted surdos, taikos, big bass drums etc.)? Am I the only one who doesn't hear anything of the sort in this score? I hear...percussion. Are some people just allergic to anything with a beat now?
No sense arguing with fools, @TGP.
