I’ve never heard Titanic (other than the Enya track), so you won’t see me ragging on it. Just find it amusing I see more “Overrated” posts than posts praising it.

Nah, this is all I need.

Absolutely no Titanic fans in this Bryce Dallas Howard poster

    Considered great by who?
I’ve heard Titanic only brought up in conversations like this, but never seen anyone like that score.

I just retreat into 'Perfect Storm', which is the only Horner score with ocean and boats i'll ever need.

Depending how old you are or rather, how long you follow this line of hobby i'd sit back and relax: at some point your interests and tastes broaden by sheer necessity and you will do so freely or it just ain't your thing, in which case forcing is just a hopeless exercise.

There are many things in film music i categorically dislike - like banal strings/piano music that so many people seem to find touching - and no amount of forcing will ever change that.

I think that's a prime example. You aren't supposed to 'like it' (it depicts a hostile alien landscape and society) and i don't like listening to it particularly either - but it's a good case where personal opinions are just not cutting it, historically speaking (also goes for Blade Runner, The Cobweb, Forbidden Planet - the first electronic score - etc.), because its historical significance simply transcends that.

My pick still is Titanic, a score i find deeply lowest common denominator, and cf above, i absolutely concur that my opinion doesn't count a bit. It's a classic, so be it.

LLL should reissue The Lost World and, more importantly, bring back the old diorama!

We should be so lucky to have film composers stealing from great classical music nowadays.

Does Goldsmith's Sing the Wee from Legend count as well?

Legend. Quite possibly one of Goldsmith's greatest achievements. I get why some people find this a difficult score to get into due to the - sometimes very aggressive - use of synths. I myself find it really magical and charming. I don't think the composer ever achieved that kind of balance between the organic and synthetic again in his career. It's a fully realised fantastical world that I get to venture into every time I put this music on. A world that is both enchanting and bit frightening. This is what great fantasy film music used to be about.

Shin Godzilla might be Toho's most impressive visual achievement, but god I find that boardroom shit relentlessly slow.

There was one bit in the GvK score that stuck out like dogs' balls, when Team-G enters the Mechagodzilla test chamber, to me it sounded like something from Harry Manfredini's score from Jason X, which is arguably his worst Friday the 13th score. Seriously? This is what's now regarded as acceptable in a mainstream blockbuster??

The Godzilla visual reference in Friday the 13th Part III isn't lost on me in this instance though.

I probably expressed years ago here that Jerrald Goldsmith’s Poltergeist is my favorite film score.

Still is, apparently. I’d only listen to this on special occasions (my birthday, or when driving to and home from a date with my gal), but now, for no particular reason, just feels like a good time to revisit and take in the magic of listening to this.

I’ve beloved memories of the weekend I spent alone as a tyke, and played this with the living room speakers while turning off all the lights in the house. Yes, the scare at the beginning of “Night of the Beast” is powerfully startling that way!
I might’ve used a straw as a baton to conduct with while listening (likely influenced by the Mickey cartoon “The Band Concert”), but don’t quote me on that, I’d rather pretend kid me wasn’t that much of a dweeb.

For the record, no composer before or since has gifted me anything nearly as rapturous as “Let’s Get Her/Rebirth”.

Land Before Time and Rocketeer kick Willow’s ass to the curb and leaves it weeping and pleading for mercy before a bus drives by and runs it over (while the danger motif plays), finishing it off.
