How do you listen to the FYC score?
-

To carry on @WampaRat’s thematic glossary I put together a thematic breakdown of the score as well as the chronological order. I’ve seen the film three times now and honestly it’s one of the best things I’ve watched in a long time. In combination with Part One I’d say this is a 10/10 movie.
RETURNING THEMES/MOTIFS
Dune Main Theme -
I’ll be classifying the four-note theme as the “A” theme and the eight-note theme as the “B” theme to stay consistent. When both play at once I’ll refer to it as the main theme.
Fate/“The One” Theme -This theme is extremely underplayed on album. The theme in this film basically becomes Jessica’s after she… changes. It’s played on woodwinds quite a lot as she enacts her plans. There is a major missing variation of this theme that plays towards the end of the film. It has the Kwisatz Haderach motif as a counterpoint. I’m sure this will be on the FYC album.
Vast Mystery/Wonder Chords -
Sadly this motif takes a backseat in this score. It plays a select couple times but doesn’t nearly have the presence it did in the first film.
Tragic Noble Theme -
Another theme that is diluted this time around. It has a great appearance at the end of “Only I Will Remain” but that track doesn’t actually play during the film only the credits.
Impending Doom Motif -
Although not actually appearing as much as it did in the first film, this motif makes a major impact on the film by playing in select important scenes relating to Paul’s dark future or even the darker actions he takes here.
Sorrow/Loss Motif -
Sadly not featured on the album but there is a track in the film that features this motif. It plays twice and both times relates to how the Bene Gesserit prophecy is taking over the Fremen and leading them to war. Hopefully this track will be on FYC album.
House Atreides/Paul and Chani’s Love Theme -
This theme goes from barely being featured in the first film to becoming the main theme of the second. It evolves from the bagpipe power anthem for House Atreides to a beautiful woodwind/Blade Runner-esque love theme for Paul and Chani.
Bene Gesserit Seduction Motif/Feyd Rautha Motif -
This motif was originally featured on the second half of the track, “Song of the Sisters” from the sketchbook album. It was then developed menacingly into the six-note Feyd Rautha Motif now heard in this film.
Bene Gesserit Whispers/Chant
Arrakis Drum Motif
Harkonnen Screech
Harkonnen Clang
Fremen Chimes -
This is a new motif that I noticed upon rewatching both films. It’s like a small little chime march that appears when characters are walking through the rocky terrain of the Sietches. It has a big appearance that’s not on the new album but it’s when…
(Sandwalk Video (FYC) - 0:22)
(Stillsuits - 1:55)
NEW THEMES/MOTIFS
Kwisatz Haderach Motif -
New dark three-note cello motif for the culmination of the Bene Gesserit breeding process; the Kwisatz Haderach. Also has a drum rhythm behind it. Blares loud in theaters and often acts as a counterpoint to other main themes. It represents both Paul and Feyd as they’re both prospects for the Kwisatz Haderach.
(Harkonnen Arena - 4:48)
(Travel South - 0:06)
(Arrival - 0:00)
(You Fought Well - 0:12)
The Emperor’s Motif -
Loud and grand motif that represents the emperor of the known universe. Features choir and some brass which most of Dune doesn’t have.
(The Emperor - 0:39)

I updated this breakdown with the unreleased tracks and also I have now come to realize that Feyd’s motif is actually just the seduction motif from the second half of “Song of the Sisters.” Hans decided to use the same motif again for a different purpose just like the House Atreides theme (Although the seduction motif was never heard in the first film only the sketchbook album). -
I’ve uploaded some of the unreleased tracks from Dune: Part Two on my channel. They’re a little rippy but for the most part are pretty good. I used the 5.1 split on Audacity from the Vudu file and some AI for the reduction to overall create a solid product.

Just watched Civil War. Good movie but has a very bleak message. I don’t know if I’ll ever rewatch it. If it is Alex Garland’s last film I find that interesting. The movie is really about journalism and how it numbs you to the reality of things. Think Nightcrawler meets The Hurt Locker. I still need to watch Men but of the other three Garland directed films I’d rank them from best to worst as Ex Machina, Annihilation, and lastly Civil War.
-
I feel like some movies these days are getting a little full of themselves style-wise. Style over substance is happening a lot.
-
So I was watching Dogma and I don’t know if it’s just me but I recognized a familiar tune playing in the background of this scene. It’s the “Rivendell” theme from LOTR. Almost note-for-note. So I looked up who did the score thinking it would be a rando but no it was Howard Shore of all people. -
-
???? Why would he stop now. He’s at the top of his game.

Hopefully Denis will think Messiah is better than Part Two so we’re able to see the movie🤣
-
Will there be a release for the Halo soundtrack?
-
Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd is their magnum opus IMO.
-
He definitely made the message more obvious. I think part of the reason it worked so well in the books is because it really is a complete heel-turn. You go from the heroic ending of the first book to the complete tragedy in the beginning of the second. Paul isn’t as twisted in the book as he is in the movie. Herbert essentially wrote Messiah to make the point he was trying to make clearer. He felt he didn’t do a good enough job. So that’s probably why Denis made it more obvious that Paul is turning into a sinister character. The third movie won’t have as much of the shock value that the books had I don’t think but I still believe that Denis really knows what he’s doing. He has a plan.
-
Zimmer will have a lot of time to come up with ideas for the third film considering Denis probably won’t make this for another five years or so. I’m honestly so excited for this film. More than I was for the first two movies. The second Dune book is where the message of the series truly comes into view.
-
I quite enjoy the themes and their variations. They’ve grown on me a lot. Like genuinely the melody of the main theme and the tragic noble theme are perfect in my mind. Listening to the music outside the film is like going into a dream-like state.

I decided to do a prequel of sorts to the thematic breakdown I did of Part Two. Again using @WampaRat’s thematic glossary I put together this track-by-track analysis of both the complete first score and the sketchbook album.
THEMES/MOTIFS
Dune Main Theme -
I don’t think this theme represents one thing. It represents Paul, his destiny, Arrakis, and the overall story of Dune in general. It is a true “main” theme. There are two different variations of the main theme. There is the 4-note variation that is more mystical, ethereal, and powerful (Used for sandworms and epic moments) and then there is the 8-note variation that is more mysterious, ethnic, and malleable (Used for Paul, Arrakis, and his destiny). When both variations play together I call it the main theme. This usually only happens in pivotal moments or concert suites.
Fate/“The One” Theme -The second main theme of Dune is for the chosen one, the Kwisatz Haderach. When this theme is screamed it sounds like a powerful war anthem but when it is subdued on woodwind or whisper the theme has a much more sinister/seductive vibe to it.
Vast Mystery/Wonder Chords -
The next two motifs/themes are very connected. The Vast Mystery/Wonder Chords often play in tangent with the Tragic Noble theme. So for this reason these chords are essentially just for all matters of wonder/awe/visions that are in the Dune universe.
Tragic Noble Theme -
This theme represents the responsibility/cost of being a leader, specifically when it comes to House Atreides. It connects to the Vast Mystery/Wonder Chords a lot which shows how this theme too is mystical in nature.
Impending Doom Motif -
My favorite motif from the film, this dark and menacing motif represents the darkness on the horizon for the Dune universe. Whether it be the evilness of the Harkonnens, the Sardukar, or Paul himself, this motif encompasses all scheming and danger.
Sorrow/Loss Motif -
This short little sad motif represents the sorrow that the Atreides experience in Dune. More specifically relating to Leto losing just about everything.
Duncan Idaho Motif -
Batman-esque motif that plays in essentially the same manner whenever Duncan arrives to the scene.
House Atreides -
This absolutely gorgeous theme went very underused in the first film being completely shrunk to just the bagpipe aspect for the Atreides army. The main vocal part of this theme is incredible and I can see why Hans ended up deciding to use it as the main theme of Part Two. It’s elegant yet also tragic which perfectly captures both House Atreides/Paul and Chani’s love.
Bene Gesserit Whispers/Chants -
Little whispers and occasional loud chanting whenever the Bene Gesserit’s schemes are at play.
Arrakis Drum Motif -
The most prominent motif in the series, this short little drum burst is everywhere in the score not representing one particular thing ever. However there are a couple of instances where this drum motif is highlighted specifically (Arrakeen and Dream of Arrakis). I think in both of these cases the drum motif is representing the roughness of the desert.
Sardukar Throat Singing Motif -
Strange vocal throat singing manipulation that represents the Sardukar (And maybe even the God-Emperor????)
Harkonnen Screech -
Loud siren-like horn that represents the Harkonnens.
Harkonnen Clang -
Metallic clang that represents the Harkonnens.
Fremen Chimes -
Small little chime march that represents the Fremen way of life.

I love the second half of "Only I Will Remain." It sounds like light to me, which is interesting because I think that theme is meant to be foreboding and convey destruction. But the variation in that track doesn't do that for me.
I think that’s what Hans was going for honestly. The beauty and majesty of Paul getting his revenge and becoming emperor but also the realization of what it all really means -
1. Interstellar (Best theater experience I’ve ever had)
2. The Dark Knight
3. Oppenheimer
4. Inception
5. Batman Begins
6. The Prestige
7. The Dark Knight Rises
8. Tenet
9. Dunkirk (Only Nolan movie I don’t like)
I still haven’t seen Memento, Insomnia, or Following although I mean to soon.

Honestly half of that track felt different. I could not even hear any of the vocals in the movie.
The track also got cut awkwardly short to match Paul’s speech so the build-up isn’t right. It sounds edited and weird. Still though the moment is spectacular in film and this is just me being a picky film score nerd. -

Hans has exaggerated/stretched the truth multiple times in the past to hype up his scores.

It is. We’ve been going in circles about this lol.

Lmfao not worth arguing about something I know I’m correct on. You believe what you wanna believe my friend. Just for an experiment though why don’t you listen to the track “House Atreides” and then the track “Only I Will Remain.” Also the Atreides theme played twice in Part One like I said and the Dune A theme is MOSTLY for sandworms. B theme is for the prophecy (The ocean on Arrakis you mentioned) and Paul, like I said.
