Rowling has never shied away from political commentary in Potter. The entire 5th book is a not-so-subtle dig at the unhealthily symbiotic relationship between right-wing print media and conservative governments, and all the later books paint the Ministry of Magic as ineffectual, needlessly bureaucratic and ultimately corrupt.

I'm keen to see this film. It looks fun and the characters seem pretty interesting, and despite what the critics here say I've always found Yates to be a capable director. All of his Potter films were decently-made, considering the size of the source material and how much needed to be cut out.

The score sounds a bit on the generic side, but no moreso than Desplat's DH scores.

    Steven Spielberg called me up
He said "I've made a film"
In the dark I sat there crying
    Watching all those people dying
At the end I turned to him and said
"Steve...someone better needs to score instead"
    And...
Steven said "I know but they're all dead"

Ilvermorny explained. As you'll see the founder of this school was deliberately modelling it after Hogwarts, which she never got to go to herself. Great extra writing I thought. Looking forward to this movie, she's been doing a great job preparing the backstory for it.

After a couple of listens, the following thoughts have become clear to me:
Thematically speaking, the score is not obvious. Most of the cues work subtly in their development and there's scarcely even one "big" thematic statement or repeated choice of instrumentation. Considering how the nature of this film is shaping up from reports - that the characters are on the run, unsure of each other and without the familiarity of Hogwarts and their friends - this seems an appropriate choice.
The thing that stands out to me most is Desplat's skill at instrumentation and colour. It all seems quite deliberate; I don't get the impression that much of the material is "interchangeable", orchestration-wise. I think this is an important skill, as many contemporary composers give the impression that they sit down at a piano and work out a passage or a theme without hearing any particular instrumentation in their head. Automatically this creates a sense of genericness. I wouldn't say much of this music is generic, except for maybe a few passages of the heavy action music that does sound a little Williams-on-autopilot-y. Certainly not on the level of "generic brooding" which I experience with Hooper's scores.
Interestingly, even after listening to the whole OST, my favourite moment in everything I've heard is that gorgeous clarinet melody at around 56 seconds in "Polyjuice Potion". I quite like this theme and notice that it pops up here and there in some unexpected ways. I was incredibly impressed when I realised an altered version of it is the basis of the "Harry and Ginny" track. Speaking of "Harry and Ginny", I find this one hauntingly beautiful. For some reason it really reminds me of James Hannigan's music for the OotP and HBP games, specifically "Wandering Night". Yeah they're not really that similar... they both have piano.... whatever.
I think, for me, this is a listening experience that will be rewarding over time, as more and more of the subtleties are "unlocked" so to speak and I understand more what's happening. Also, watching the film for the first time will undoubtedly have an impact.
So... It's good. But I'm not sure how much I like it yet.

That is a good sign. Hopefully it's not as out of place as the verbatim statement of Hedwig's Theme towards the beginning of Half-Blood Prince.
In other news, listening to Doyle's Goblet of Fire score for the first time in a while. It really is a rich, beautiful score. If it wasn't for the fact that it came immediately after PoA and had the Potter reputation riding on it I reckon a lot more people would like it.
The fanfares are getting old (just like I remembered), but there's a heck of a lot of good stuff here. "Voldemort" alone is worth the price for me.

You guys are never happy with what you're given. The more you investigate and find a few seconds of music that wasn't released the more you complain. If you just listened to the scores and not worried about all this stupid stuff you'd be happy like me.

A good example is the complaining about the Temple of Doom scores having a minute difference to them from the film. You guys were up in arms whereas 99.9% of listeners would never notice or even know what you're taking about.

Just listen to the releases and be happy. They don't even have to give us as much as they do.

Very, very impressive transcription @loert, thanks so much for sharing. I've been working on my own solo piano version for fun and you've definitely inspired me to continue on it (much simpler than your version of course).

I also adore your arrangement of The Falcon for two pianos. Fantastic stuff. Very inspiring.

Holy shit dude, there's a trilogy of films coming out from Rowling's wizarding world, exclusively set in the US. It stands to reason that the community there operates very differently to their UK counterparts, including the language they use. She's continuing to build this universe. Just because she didn't come up with the term the day she started writing the first book doesn't mean she's not entitled to create these details now.

Myrtle's first name is part if a fictional biography of the character that the author though would be fun to write and share with people. That's. It. There's no grand conspiracy to rewrite your childhood dude, just calm your farm.

Because there have been no American characters speaking dialogue to date.

Just as there have been no Australian, Canadian, Afghani, Japanese, Chinese, Iranian, Egyptian etc. characters, so we don't know what they call Muggles in their own communities. These characters are separate to the fans who exist in those places the real world. I think you are confusing the two.

This is an incredibly simple concept and you are clutching at straws in your responses. Fun fact: in different parts of the world the term "clutching at straws" is sometimes expressed as "grasping at straws". This is a phenomenon known as localised language.

Sorry but that's just bull - "Muggle" is the UK term for non-magical person and "No-maj" is the American. It's not bloody retcon, it's just that there's been no Americans in the series up until now so it's only just come about.

And you have to admit, "Muggle" is such a ridiculously whimsical British word, it wouldn't make any sense for anyone else in the world to use that term in a colloquial way.

What are you talking about? She's not changing stuff, she's literally writing new material and fleshing out the universe as she goes along. We're not talking about midichlorians here, we're talking about a localised version of a very obviously slang term and the addition of a last name for a character who was only referred to as "Myrtle". It's just extra info for those who are interested in reading about it. It changes absolutely nothing of the original material and offers no new insight, and you can choose not to read it if you don't want to. I don't understand why you're so upset about this?

Because obviously the books are written from Harry's perspective, who is an English person, in the United Kingdom. So of course Muggle is still appropriate for the books. I don't see where your canon anxiety is coming from here?
