What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)

Two different beasts. And the ending of S1 is a cop-out compared to the beautiful resolution of the movie. What the tv version offers is a bigger scope - character renderings are more thorough, storyline has more detours and so on (sometimes there is too much of a good thing, i. e violence), which makes the movie even better: they got all of this very right in 90 minutes.

Thats kinda what I figured.

But it's actually the absolute simplicity of Fargo that i love. The crime itself is unremarkable except for the utter incompetence of everyone involved. Margie solves it by being a good police officer but doesn't need to do more than use her gut instinct and common sense. We know almost nothing about any of the characters outside of what we see them do. It's one of those films where I never felt i needed to see more than I did.

Which is sorta why I haven't checked the TV show.

It's surely Top 10 material and mostly has great performances. Its pleasures are sometimes more 'stunted', though, like long bloody shootouts or corpse maulings and so on - again, nothing of this tops the 5-second image of Stormare and the concrete mixer.

Ridiculous in it's absurdity and brutality. The violence is the film is actually quite distributing if you think about it.

Jerry Lundegaards failed escape attempt in his underwear might be one of the most satisfying movie arrests I've seen. What an absolute loser.

Better than the film, is really pushing it. But the show is doing "Coen Brothers" better than the latest Coen flicks.

I really loved S1 of Fargo. S2 was still good TV and had fantastic moments but overall not as consistent as S1. I hope S3 will be more focused again.

S2 is less consistent, maybe, but it aims higher than S1, and I admire it for that. In the end, they're both on about the same level for me.

That's probably why it got off the road sometimes. Keep it simple and keep it focused is what I always say.

I personally loved the more ambitious absurdism of the second season. Topped off with some very fine character work, and I can overlook some of its pacing issues.

I compare Fargo S2 with Coen's No Country For Old Men. The first hour is brilliant but then in the last act it wants to be a different movie altogether.

OTOH, I didn't want a typical showdown between the two men either.

Season 2 was probably more interesting and original as a concept but yeah it wasn't as consistent.

And Martin Freeman, an actor whom I don't really like much, gives his absolutely finest performance in S1.

Always a pity.

Still great television.

Who are these people? Hookers? They are too attractive for Fargo!

FAIL!

Shall we just merge all those into one "What is the Last Thing You Watched Thread". Films, sexy celebrities, porn, ASMR, television and funny Youtube videos in one glorious big bad thread.

They are hookers and they only appear a few seconds ...

Have fun!

I like Fargo but it's not exactly my favorite Coen brothers movie. I know there were times where the jargony "yah" can get a bit grating. Some think the "yah" is the best thing since sliced bread but I'm not convinced of that ...

Nice review Steef, I love Fargo (the film) as well; Recently rewatched it a few years back and was pleased by how well it held up; I just love it.

We started the TV show last night, and its similar with its blend of comedy and drama (and setting and character types), but yea, absolutely loses the cinematic quality of telling an entire satisfying story in 2 hours.  The first episode felt more or less like the first hour of a 2 hour movie, but I see there's actually 9 more hours to go until its wrapped up... hope its good!

Oh, it's definitely good:

But that doesn't mean you will like it, of course.

It's like saying "I'm going to check out  Mozart. I hope he's good.

Trust me, Mozart is good, but that doesn't mean everyone will dig his music.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

My wife had never seen it and I hadn't since I was a teenager.  I must admit that this time I wasn't as gripped as I thought I'd be in the looooong part of the movie just about Dreyfus' growing obsession. The final act of the film however remains a masterpiece of visual and musical storytelling.

The original theatrical.  I was not a fan of the directors cut, at least that's how I remember it. Haven't seen that since I was a teen either (I was obsessed with this movie for a while back then).

This is what I rented on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FJUC194/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1491777621&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=close+encounters+of+the+third+kind&dpPl=1&dpID=51nDfC%2BSAQL&ref=plSrch

Pretty sure it's the original '77 cut.

I watched that for the first time since college a couple years ago, also with my wife who had never seen it.  I agree the middle is an interesting section of the film, and fairly unique when paired with the ending of the film - you basically watch a guy alienate then abandon his wife and children to go on a spaceship.  Spielberg would never have balls like that again!

I think we watched the Final Cut, or whatever it's called, the one that's mostly like the theatrical, but removes some things and adds back in some of the SE scenes, but still doesn't feature the inside the mothership scene.

I should also of course single out the sequence where Barry, the young child, is abducted.  It holds up completely as a gripping, stunning suspense sequence.
