Huh. I knew he was credited as "score consultant" but didn't realize he actually composed some of the score. Now I want to check out those cues!

Really weird that at this stage of his carreer Powell is doing ghostwriting.

Fixed. Since he was not credited anywhere (I think), then he was a ghostwriter.

Isn't it weird that now we have two scores by rising female composers for Disney movies (Captain Marvel and Encanto) where they had the help of a much more established male composer (Giacchino and Powell) in a few cues? And that such help went unnanounced by everybody, and the only way to know about it is looking into databases like GEMA?

Is it ghostwriting if you can still find the proper information in official repertoires? I suppose how the composer is officially credited on album/film (score consultant is what JP is listed as on Encanto) can make it feel deceptive to some.

Also, it's not like he's the only credited writer on these particular cues (unlike the one that was solely Gia on CM), so why leave out the possibility that this was a legit collab between both parties?

Link to comment

In Encanto's case, considering Germaine used to work for Powell, I'm inclined to believe his credit on these cues was more like him giving some general directions and insights, rather than properly writing the music. But I could be wrong.

As for Captain Marvel, I really don't know what happened for Giacchino to be involved. Maybe Disney/Marvel didn't had enough faith in Pinar and then asked Gia for help?

Boy, if more people paid attention to the minutiae of film music, it would look REALLY BAD for Marvel if it leaks that, on the very first time that they hire a female composer for one of their blockbusters, their faith on her was so little that they brought a male composer to help.

Link to comment

Well, the only reason that info even became known is because the reactionary websites/YouTubers were so desperate to tear apart every aspect of CM that they basically acknowledged the score just to disparage the production further by alleging Gia did a considerable amount on the project, by which he then had to make a statement about helping out on the project in a limited capacity.

It sure gives a bit of a taste over what it might look like if the general public cared more about who wrote what in film scores, but it certainly didn't deserve to come about in such a blatantly misogynistic manner.

Given what happened with Kelly Marie Tran on SW, I'd hate to think if it was for this reason that Toprak didn't come back for the sequel.

Germaine worked under Powell, so I'm not sure that's a fair comparison.

His biggest contribution on the first Toy Story was probably stealing one of Horner's motifs from Balto (which he orchestrated, and probably co-wrote a bit as well) and turning it into Buzz Lightyear's theme... Or was it the other way around? lol

Anyway, IMHO the best RN Pixar scores are Monsters Inc, Toy Story 2 and especially A Bug's Life (which desperatly needs an expansion).

I definitely agree on Toy Story 2 and A Bug's Life; Monster's Inc I've tried listening to several times and I've never found any of it memorable except for the opening titles

Sometimes on shuffle, the music went from Matrix to Toy Story and everytime I got confused... good to know I wasn't crazy. Though I still get a bit confused when it goes from B:TAS/The Flash (1990) to Toy Story...

According to GEMA, he's responsible for about 14 minutes of music. With only 4:17 minutes being credited solely to him

He's only credited for these four "cues" on SACM:

https://socios.sacm.org.mx/repertorio/obraSACMver.php?Id=997762355

https://socios.sacm.org.mx/repertorio/obraSACMver.php?Id=997762453

https://socios.sacm.org.mx/repertorio/obraSACMver.php?Id=997762845

Here is my best guess as to how those line up with the slate numbers and the Legacy Collection release:

Woody Concerned = 4m7 = 23 "Buzz, You're Alive!"

Woody / Buzz Fight+Left at Sonoco = 4m8 = 24 Buzz and Woody Fight

New Rocket = 7m2a = 39 The Big One (0:00-0:18)

Slightly confused by the Clear and Present Danger credits - I mean, we know Don Davis did a lot of lifting on that, especially the helicopter finale but this is not credited?

Is it really that weird that people pop in and help with a couple of cues? I thought this is pretty common in the industry. I am more surprised that people think this needs to be notice by someone.

What about Don Davis on The Pagemaster - Davis included several cues from this on his promo CD

If you have access to the archives, can you check what they have for Kamen's Die Hard 2 and Robin Hood - they are both very Kamenesque but it would be interesting to hear if there was any help here, considering the nutty deadlines he was under

Which promo are you referring to? Regardless, I don't know what, if anything, Davis wrote for that film aside from those cues, since Horner got cue sheet credits for the whole score.

GEMA credits Chris Boardman, William Ross, Bruce Babcock and Don Davis (all of whom were credited as orchestrators) with additional music for Die Hard 2. Kamen is credited for everything on its OST, though I don't know if that is actually accurate.

I don't know if there were any additional composers for Robin Hood either, since Kamen is credited for the whole score in GEMA.

The Davis promo is the one with Eye of the Pyramid, but I guess I will just shut up now as clearly no-one wants to trench up this stuff .....but I do like your acknowledgment of additional music on Die Hard 2.

So, does the database function from mostly late 90s when Zimmer started to bring up his co-composers and they got ASCAP credited or is it something else? I'm not seeing much info there on anything pre-1998 outside of the obvious names

Not necessarily. Ken Darby got credit for his work on Alfred Newman's The Greatest Story Ever Told, for example. Edward H. Plumb got credited for his work on the whale chase cue from Pinocchio, despite Leigh Harline and Paul J. Smith being the only composers credited in the film.
