lol. Yo I'm just wondering who you guys like and don't like. I'm not trying to compare Shore between Williams. But hey, if you guys wanna do that, feel free. I just wanna know who's your favorite (and not so favorite) composers.

I think top ten is too much. Elfman, Goldsmith, Horner, Herrmann, Williams and at least one of the Newmans are gonna be on most lists. Newton Howard, Silvestri, North Waxman and several more will also appear often.

But, I could list composers I generaly don't like (For different reasons). There is not a single big composer (like in the top 40 all time list) I've have yet to hear that I don't like any of there work. These are composers who, seeing their names on the box makes me move on to the next movie.

Vangelis (For his religous sticking to synth)

Giorgio Moroder (see above)

Erich Serra (Simply misses opportunities. Joan of Arc and Goldeneye could have had great scores)

Steven Warbeck (I mind less- but I find a lot of his simply annoying)

Wojceich Kilar (A warped composer if ever there was one)

Trevor Rabin (Only things I like are the piano piece from Armaggedon and Deep Blue Sea)

Marc Knopfler

Joel Goldsmith (Not a Star Trek fan, find everything of his to be entirly uninspierd)

Joseph Williams (To be fair)

Nick Glennie-Smith (So far still just a Zimmer wannabe)

Those recently leaving the list are David Kitay (Because of Ghost world), John Powell (Because of The Italian Job) and Terence Blanchard (Because of 25th Hour)

Here are a few I like

John Williams

Thomas Newman

Danny Elfman

James Horner

I really dont dislike any, I just disagree with the whole MV idea. I think that if a composer works alone, he will work best at his composition, that is just my opinon.

Favourites: John Williams & Jerry Goldsmith

More favourites in alphabetical order:

Don Davis

Patrick Doyle

Elliot Goldenthal

Erich Wolfgang Korngold

Michael Nyman

Basil Poledouris

Howard Shore

...and plenty of others I wouldn't quite call favourites right at this moment, but might tomorrow. :sigh:

Least favourites: Hans Zimmer & MV. Not always (I think Zimmer has done a couple of rather nice scores, and Chicken Run is awesome), but most of the time.

I don't think I know twenty composers. I don't think I even know 10 composer's work. From what I have heard:

1) John Williams

2) Danny Elfman

3) James Newton Howard

4) James Horner

5) Er...

I don't think I can go much further than that. Jerry Goldsmith isn't in there, because I haven't heard anything of his outside the film, except for some main title cues of Star Trek films. Howard Shore, I've only heard his LotR scores. Hans Zimmer is okay too.

This changes heavily from time to time. Williams is always number 1, but the others change a lot, mostly depending on my mood. Williams is the only one I really care for because he's Williams. With other composers, I just check if I like the score, and then I'll see who wrote it, although I do try to get more of composers if I like their previous works. I'm just still fairly new to this, I guess, so I don't really know which way to go, but Williams always works fine for me. :sigh:

Melange - Is having an affair with Goldsmith as of late.

Melange - Johnny does'nt satisfy me as much anymore.

Stefan, you are the one who has the perfect album for introducing somebody to Goldsmith...and he's not even far from where you live!

Marian - expecting that Stefan will fulfill his duty as a Goldsmith fan.

Yep Yep, we need to talk about Goldsmith now, I think that he is a great composer, just gettingolder, but age wont stop him

But weak movie scripts may slow him down. I'm very eager to here something fresh from him, and I'm not talking about a score to an animated movie. I want him to score something epic, or something with substance. But I'll give it to you, he is a great composer, but I want new Goldsmith music!

Hey Mark, nice list man! If you like Ifukube's work have you heard Toru Takemitsu's RAN or Hayasaka's SEVEN SAMURAI scores? They're amazing!

As for the list, remember folks that this is fave and least fave composers, not Best and Worst composers. Everyone is entitled to their own listening preferences. We shouldn't bash someone for not enjoying Herrmann's works. ALthough the Essa Peka Solonen disc is AMAZING! I don't quite get what Morlock meant by Kilar being a twisted composer. But hey, Kilar's music doesn't do it for him. No biggie.

My faves are:

Williams (everything except Lost World and 1941)

Goldsmith (First Blood, Papillon, Tora Tora Tora, Wind and the Lion etc.)

Goldenthal (Cobb, Alien3, Golden Gate)

Howard (Signs, Unbreakable, Grand Canyon, Wyatt Earp etc.)

Kilar (BS Dracula, Portrait of a Lady, 9th Gate)

Ifukube (Godzilla, Majin series)

Elfman (Edward Scissorhands, The Hulk)

Giacchino (Alias, video game work)

Silvestri (Contact, Forrest Gump, Predator)

Korngold (Sea Hawk)

Herrmann (F451, Vertigo)

Really Don't Listen to:

Alan Menken

Brian Tyler

Mark Shaiman (although he's not a bad composer, just not my cup of tea)

Eric Serra

David Arnold (post Stargate)

Why the hell are so many people saying they dislike Hans Zimmer so much?

I don't get this! OK yeah hes put out some crap, but he has also put out some rocking good scores. Gladiator being no exception.
