A24 4,814 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Amistad, a movie masterpiece?! That's a new one. Never heard it before I with good reason, I say.
Not Mr. Big 4,818 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 It's no Schindler's List but it's still ok
publicist 4,648 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 AMISTAD alternates between some breathtakingly directed scenes and a lot of really maudlin, paternalistic bullshit that have the dubious distinction of even making Williams look bad. It's a schizophrenic movie featuring the best and worst Spielberg has to offer.
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 That 'maudlin, paternalistic bullshit' is some of the most profound material Spielberg has ever filmed. It's Hollywood's most mature handling of the history of slavery to date, and makes 12 YEARS A SLAVE seem utterly trite in comparison.
A24 4,814 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Why profound? I saw nothing but a straightforward courtroom TV drama about slaves with a lot of miscasting. What made it into Spielberg's most profound masterpiece? Because it's about slavery? Then there's the matter of historical inaccuracies.

It's Hollywood's most mature handling of the history of slavery to date, and makes 12 YEARS A SLAVE seem utterly trite in comparison.Rubbish. There are some strong scenes with the slaves, like the opening or the remembrance of middle passage - all the americana stuff is on a Hallmark level of writing and filmmaking and no amount of rhetorical sugarcoating can make amends for that.If Spielberg would have just trusted his instincts, AMISTAD could have become a dark and powerful drama. As it is, it's barely enough for a rainy sunday afternoon (Sharky excepted, of course).
nightscape94 967 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 While Amistad is not a masterpiece, it's certainly not a piece of shit. Even more unfortunate perhaps is that it's forgettable.
Once 918 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 The Coens have a spotty history at least since their glory days ended in 2003.Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. In my opinion they have only made good movies from 2007 forward.
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I loved BURN AFTER READING and A SERIOUS MAN. Not mad about TRUE GRIT, NO COUNTRY or INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, and the less said about THE LADY KILLERS the better.
nightscape94 967 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 A Serious Man was a great film, one of my favorites of theirs. No complaints about True Grit, and No Country for Old Men is a masterpiece. Didn't see the most recent one.
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 My problems with NO COUNTRY start and end with Cormac McCarthy, who I've never liked.
nightscape94 967 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I applaud him for watching any and all movies seemingly without prejudice, but I don't have the time to waste on films that have a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes (Skyline) and based on everything I've read tells me I will hate it.
Matt C 541 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 They now have release dates.Disney scheduled the Cold War spy thriller for October 16, 2015. BFG will hit theaters July 1, 2016.
Mr. Brown 91 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Is the Cold War thriller based on a book? Has any source mentioned that yet?
Jay 42,496 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Disney scheduled the Cold War spy thriller for October 16, 2015Once again Spielberg drops a movie just before a Star Wars or Harry Potter film, meaning JW won't have all the time he needs to complete the franchise score. Damn you SS!
King Mark 3,834 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Well, it is poor timing as usualSome tracked material in AotC and RotS may be because of this
Matt C 541 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Disney scheduled the Cold War spy thriller for October 16, 2015Once again Spielberg drops a movie just before a Star Wars or Harry Potter film, meaning JW won't have all the time he needs to complete the franchise score. Damn you SS!With the way Spielberg works now, I think the movie will be done in early 2015. Williams should be able to do both.
nightscape94 967 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 They'll be back to back, but not on top of each other.
Not Mr. Big 4,818 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Yeah, 2 months isn't that bad. Episodes 2 & 3 had only 1 month before the others projects.
Tom 5,617 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 2 months isn't bad, except Star Wars will have to be scored first. Meaning the timeframe for scoring it may be compressed.
Jay 42,496 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 That's my point. The same thing happened in 2002 with AOTC / MR and HP2 / CMIYC. And in 2004 with HP3 / The Terminal. And in 2005 with ROTS / WOTW. Spielberg has the worst timing!
King Mark 3,834 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 then he won;t make another movie for 4 years
Once 918 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 He has to ruin the schedule for the next Star Wars as well, in 2017 or 2018.
john Williams is the best 1 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Fantastic news today The Cold war thriller with Tom Hanks could be really really interesting and I wonder how John Williams will score that film.in terms of the BFG well a classic score could be on the cards I think Once 1
Jay 42,496 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Welcome to the forum, john Williams is the best! Nice screen name!
filmmusic 2,639 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 They now have release dates.Disney scheduled the Cold War spy thriller for October 16, 2015. BFG will hit theaters July 1, 2016.BFG could be the opportunity for the last Great Williams score (since the genre offers that opportunity too)
Matt C 541 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 2 months isn't bad, except Star Wars will have to be scored first. Meaning the timeframe for scoring it may be compressed. No, it won't need to be. If the production schedule is similar to, say, War Horse, scoring will be done by spring 2015. (Which gives Williams plenty of time to spot, score, and conduct the Episode VII sessions in England.) The thing about Spielberg that I love is that he's amazingly efficient, edits on set, and knows exactly what he wants. He doesn't go down to the wire to finish the film, he's finished months ahead of release.
mrbellamy 7,332 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 20th Century Fox will co-finance the Cold War thriller and distribute the film overseas.
Balahkay 629 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Since Harrison's injury will reportedly take him away from production for up to 6 months, I wonder if Episode VII will be pushed back to May 2016? If so, would The BFG conflict with Episode VII?
King Mark 3,834 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 6 months seems a bit exaggerated. it should be 8 weeks as previously reported.
Matt C 541 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Since Harrison's injury will reportedly take him away from production for up to 6 months, I wonder if Episode VII will be pushed back to May 2016? If so, would The BFG conflict with Episode VII?Wrong. He's out for 6-8 weeks, and it's not going to affect Episode VII's release date. They're going to shoot around Ford's availability.
Jay 42,496 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 This article indicates he's off for six months Matt Chttp://www.torontosun.com/2014/06/21/harrison-ford-to-take-six-months-off-star-wars-filming-report
Balahkay 629 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I've read 6-8 weeks and I've read up to 6 months. Disney/Lucasfilm hasn't made a statement, so it's speculation and nobody really knows for sure at this point. I doubt it will affect the release date, though.
mrbellamy 7,332 Posted July 21, 2014 Author Posted July 21, 2014 Still rolling along: Amy Ryan and Alan Alda are in talks to join the cast, principal photography set for September with the Coen brothers' screenplay.
Matt C 541 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Looks like this will definitely be Spielberg's next film(s). I can't wait for the BFG cast to come together. Once 1
Once 918 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Two Williams scores in 2015, yay. And I too look very much forward to BFG.
Ricard 2,318 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Looks like this will definitely be Spielberg's next film(s)Yes, they've been confirmed for over a month as Spielberg's next two films. Two Williams scores in 2015, yay.Very likely, but still unconfirmed
mrbellamy 7,332 Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 Looks like this will definitely be Spielberg's next film(s)Yes, they've been confirmed for over a month as Spielberg's next two films.True, but it's sometimes hard to know with Spielberg. Every now and then a movie looks like it's about to get off the ground and then he abandons it.I don't think that'll be the case here, though. There's been a lot of news in just a few months and he really seems committed to doing this asap.
Not Mr. Big 4,818 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I guess it's really happening! Not a fan of Tom Hanks' hair due though.
crocodile 9,211 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I'm really looking forward to whatever JW might come up with for this one.Karol
nightscape94 967 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 And the inevitable backlash! Code 000. Destruct. 0. 1
crocodile 9,211 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Is the film still untitled?Maybe it's titled Steven Spielberg's Untitled Cold War Thriller. Karol
Not Mr. Big 4,818 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Is the film still untitled?Maybe it's titled Steven Spielberg's Untitled Cold War Thriller. KarolThe title should be The KGB Smeltington 1
