Apparently, none of Affleck's movies are above decent. There is something very middle-of-the-road about them. How the whole world treated his previous movies as the second coming is downright bizarre. In any case, decent or great, Affleck doesn't give me what I'm looking for so Argo is not on my list.

But it's 95% fresh on RT! Must be good!

Gone Baby Gone was pretty good. I thought The Town was decent. Casey > Ben

There is nothing wrong with it as such, Koray. I just found it a bit too lean for a political thriller. It's ultimately a feel good political film (yeah, I know). It might be a problem if you start thinking about it too seriously. About the actual events depicted in this story, I mean.

Brave (in 2D)

It's not up with Pixar's best, and quite honestly felt like an extended TV episode of some sort. The primary issue is that the story isn't up to scratch, and when the inevitable ending happens... it just sort of happens.

Having said that, the central relationship is very well done, and, the 'Noble Maiden Fair' sequence (while cut down in the film) has much more meaning in context. Cliched?: yes. Effective/tear-jerking?: F**k yes.

Doyle's score is a perfect match - noticed a few unreleased cues that would be nice to have. And in a rare case, I heard about a minute of the credits song ('Learn Me Right') and immediately reached to re-rip my CD.

What Pixar really has to do for their imminent output is come up with better stories and original characters. After being bored with Cars 2, I'm glad this was much, much better, but overall their standards are falling.

It's a pleasant film. I was really surprised by that.

Skyfall, 4 out of 4 stars.

Skyfall, excellent film, more than makes up for QOS. May even be better than Casino Royale. Javier Bardem is both chilling and funny as the villian.

Some beautiful and striking cinematography as well.

It is a good film, but I don't know why people go ape shit over it. The finale in the graveyard/church as well as the main title design feels like I'm watching a Tim Burton fantasy-horror flick.

Posted

Actually if I had one complaint it would be the opening title design. It made me realize how much I miss Maurice Binder's work during the sequence.

Posted

I actually love the title sequence. It reminded me of Binder.

The final graveyard scene has nothing in common with Tim Burton.

And yes, I think it might be better then Casino Royale. Not in the stunts and action front, but in many other ways it it.

Or you could take your spoilerific discussion about the film to the actual Skyfall thread and discuss it openly there. Not here, where I'd like to read about films people have seen or post about ones that I have, and not in the soundtrack thread.

This is never been a problem in the past. Big films typically get there own dedicated thread for open discussion, such as The Avengers, Prometheus, and The Dark Knight Rises. Skyfall has one too, I don't get why it's spilling out all over the place with no regard for others.

I moved all the Skyfall posts into the Skyfall thread.

I completely agree with Koray on this issue, the spoilers all over the place for Skyfall was extremely annoying. I'm not seeing the film till Tuesday and I already know everything that freaking happens

I wouldn't rate it quite as highly as CR, at least after one viewing. While it was seriously good, I was sometimes worried about the balance - knowing nothing about the film beforehand, and not checking the time, I was afraid it might be over after the London sequences. I agree on the other points. Bardem and Deakins were great.

I liked the main title sequence, and the song, but neither were quite a match for CR.

This is a Bond film. It's different!

Nope.

Just use spoiler tags where appropriate like every one else thank you.

Skyfall

First viewing, but I thought it was an incredibly well-made film. Great acting all around, especially Bardem and Craig. Some real classic moments you can't help but love and the visuals were beautiful. I also have no complaints against the final act of the film (unlike some others).

As of now, I'd rank this above Casino Royale.

Boy, I need to watch this again soon!

I am not a Bond fan, so all the nods to older films and the large portions of the film that seemed overly typical for a James Bond film were lost on me, but if there was one section I have no complaints about, it's the final act. The cinematography and lighting are flat out amazing. Mendes' direction here is great.

That said, on the whole, I thought it was an excellent film, and that, again, is coming from a non-Bond fan.

I'm not much of a Bond fan myself (I've seen a couple of them, but I'm not very literate in the Bond schema). Having said that, I recognized the homage moments and found them well executed. I enjoyed the humour as well. All very well done.

Yeah the photography and lighting in the last act, especially once the flames erupt, are majestic. Wondrous depth to the images. Better than any 3D gimmick out there!

My favourite scene would be the fist time Bond and Silva meet.

This is a Bond film. It's different!

But is it also a Mendes film?

Posted

Wow, then Joey and Olivarez are finally in harmony with the sensibilities of Sam Mendes. This will be a year long remembered.

I will rent it or stream it when it becomes available in that form.

It's pretty silly, but very funny - the script is what really made this film for me. The voice kept wandering between Brian and Peter Griffin though.
