Popular Post Joe Brausam 230 Posted April 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2014 On Thursday June 12th, brass players from many of the major orchestras in the US (Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, San Francisco, L.A., Detroit, many Chicago's orchestras are all represented) will gather in California as the "National Brass Ensemble" to perform a concert of music by the renaissance composer Gabrielli, which is exciting on it's own!How does this relate to us? Apparently John Williams was commissioned to write a new work for brass especially for this occasion. I believe this performance is supposed to be recorded as well. This ought to be incredible. A24 4,853 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I long for the time when recordings actually ended up on CDs.
Incanus 5,858 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I long for the time when recordings actually ended up on CDs.It is way too expensive. And who doesn't love live recordings where people cough and clear their throats and make irritating noises at the most inopportune times?
Thor 9,312 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Intriguing! No big brass fan, but I'm always delighted for a new Williams piece, no matter what.
Jilal 628 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I long for the time when recordings actually ended up on CDs.It is way too expensive. And who doesn't love live recordings where people cough and clear their throats and make irritating noises at the most inopportune times? That's part of the experience, Incanus . It's one thing popular music listeners mostly don't have to deal with, except when the music isn't electronically amplified, or really soft. But then again, they have to deal with screams from teenage girls, the alluring scent of fresh perspiration (or antiperspirant, for that matter), etc.
Joe Brausam 230 Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 The Gabrielli music they're doing is just as incredible, if no one's ever heard the album "The Antiphonal Gabrielli" it's really worth checking out.
Tom 5,731 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I hope they have given him leeway to create a longer, concert-style piece, instead of just a short fanfare. But anything is better than nothing.
Sharkissimo 1,976 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Hope it's not another bloody Americana fanfare. A chorale would be nice.
indy4 159 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 A non-fanfare piece would be a nice change, but I think JW's recent fanfares have been very diverse and original. Fenway, For the President's Own are both very interesting approaches IMOWhatever it is, I just hope it's longer than 5 minutes
Incanus 5,858 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 10 hour Fantasia for Brass and even more Brass?
Tom 5,731 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 The vast majority of his fanfares, if not all of them, are written for a celebratory occasion. The details on this one are sketchy but it does not seem as event-driven. Given this, plus the fact that every member of the ensemble is a top person in the field, I could see Williams going for something a little different than a straight fanfare. Then it again, all of this is pure speculation, so who knows?
King Mark 3,848 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I'd really like a full concert version of the "Japanese Fan Club" theme
King Mark 3,848 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 yeah, how come they got a theme and not usActually I want a full score complete with King Mark's March
Sharkissimo 1,976 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I want a JWFAN theme. It would only be ridiculed by gk, pubs and Blume. Arpy 1
King Mark 3,848 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 JW would make an album of the JWfan score, and the rest of our lives would be dedicated to find the unreleased music
Incanus 5,858 Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 JW would make an album of the JWfan score, and the rest of our lives would be dedicated to find the unreleased musicThe music would be scattered on several JWFan based video games and extended editions, Blu-rays and Laserdiscs to keep us busy for years, often in partial form or alternate takes, not the full messageboard versions.
Little Ghost 7,988 Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 That would be cruel irony, the full score for JWfan, is inaccessible to JWfanners. Arpy 1
Popular Post Incanus 5,858 Posted April 23, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 23, 2014 That would be cruel irony, the full score for JWfan, is inaccessible to JWfanners. But wouldn't that be so like John Williams? I can already imagine Laurent Bouzereau producing it and putting this in liner notes: John Williams, the master dramatist, has finally composed a score for his dedicated fan network, building an architecture of exquisite themes for each major member of the fandom in the process. These magnificent themes and motific identifications performed by the glorious London Symphony Orchestra are now recorded and produced into a massive 10 hour opera of colour, magic and enchantment. But John Williams taught me that you don't have to hear any of the music to enjoy it so we compiled this special "nothing" for all the JWfan.com to enjoy while we store the digital sessions into a vault in Nevada that could withstand a nuclear blast and simply let them date and gather mold in the cold darkness. That is the genius of letting me produce these things. Hlao-roo, Code 000. Destruct. 0., fommes and 1 other 4

Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Pulling an Elgar... that hack! Quintus 1
Quintus 5,773 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Yes, which if true could mean this is a lovely warm brass tribute. Which John excels in.
Incanus 5,858 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 I wonder if Williams will weave musical in-jokes for his friends into this piece like Elgar did with his Enigma Variations.
Thor 9,312 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 I want it already! The pile of unrecorded Williams pieces is....well, piling up.
King Mark 3,848 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Well, we did fill a lot of gaps in recent years, but I hope this one is released right away
Maurizio 6,047 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 A recording by the National Brass Ensemble is already planned:The residency concludes at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, where the Ensemble will record a commercial CD including brass arrangements from Gabrieli's Sacrae symphoniae and the recording premiere of Williams' new composition.http://gmc.sonoma.edu/event/2170779-national-brass-ensemble-in-concert Mari 1
Incanus 5,858 Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Is John still friends with Yoda?John Williams is Yoda. Just check out my signature. Lucas stole all the Force philosophy from Williams, obviously.
Tom 5,731 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Shouldn't an announcement of this be on the main page?
Ricard 2,380 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Yes, I'm gathering all the necessary information and will post it over the weekend.
Tom 5,731 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Excellent! Hopefully a member can attend the concert and give to us a report.
Tom 5,731 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I look forward to your report. I have high hopes that this is a longer, concert-hall type piece, but I welcome any new Williams piece.
Incanus 5,858 Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I look forward to your report.Ditto! John Williams knows the performers relatively well (especially the brass players of Boston Symphony Orchestra) so I think the audience will be in for a treat!
Not Mr. Big 4,834 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Is this the "Something Exciting" thing Jay mentioned?
King Mark 3,848 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 it would be exciting if JWfan got an exclusive recording of it
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 It would be a miracle to get a recording of this and the rumored piano/orchestra piece at all, exclusive or not.
Tom 5,731 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Given the press announcement for the brass piece, I would say a recording and release of this piece is close to certain. As for the other piece, we will have to wait and see even the performance details. However, a concert piano/orchestra piece by Williams is a sort of holy grail for me. I hope that press release is accurate. KingPin 1
indy4 159 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 this is really great...we have at least 3 new JW works where we could get recordings any day now. Conversations, this brass piece and now the piano/orchestra scherzo. I think we're in a Golden Age of JW concert music.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 The first is a definite go for recording though, right? Isn't that what the whole Kickstarter thing was about?
Miguel Andrade 1,584 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Yeah, but we don't know when that'll be released2015. Spring I believe.
