Beat me to it :)

I'm no musical expert, but that's some kind of deconstruction of The Imperial March, right?

(Thread title is mine, apologies to Karol if you want something else)

That sounds like Williams to me. But was this music written specifically for a teaser or an edited piece from a longer cue written for the film?

Posted

I'm thinking it's an edited piece from a longer cue.

It definitely sounds like it is meant to make you think of The Imperial March. I really rather like it. Even if it is rather brief, I'll take it all the same!

Woah! The thumbnail on the youtube video has changed to something really strange!

Yea

It sounds like trailer music

Word on the street is that a new trailer will debut on September 4 (aka "Force Friday"), so maybe this is a snippet from that...

Posted

Abrams specifically said the trailer would debut in fall, so I'd be surprised if it was shown next week based on his statement since Fall technically begins September 23. I would love to be wrong, though. This could still be a snippet of the actual trailer.

Anyone?

Yeah, it sounds like a slowed down, fragmented version of the Imperial March.

Dammit!

There's not enough here to discern much in the way of Star Wars scoring greatness so let's not start sucking each others dicks just yet.

Yeah, it's a play on the classic opening chords of the Imperial March.

Whoever wrote it, the music was probably processed and amplified accordingly to sound more trailer-ish.

Thinking it's not Williams with the music later turning out to effectively have been written by Williams will bring you in a fairly embarrassed state (as will thinking it is when it turns out not to be), whereas thinking it either isn't or is Williams when it isn't or is indeed will make you seem all the more clever in either spotting the supposedly low quality work of a trailer composer or Williams's high quality work.

The odds are so unsympathetic the music isn't even worth thinking about.

Is it a coincidence that it sounds like the Imperial March? If it's not from Williams, where did the music come from?

Somehow, I don't think that's the case. I don't expect them to reuse shots from previous trailers

It's no coincidence. The reference is clearly intentional. And this is original music, just a matter of who wrote it.

Posted

It's been confirmed: Steve Jablonsky wrote the music.

I'm having flashbacks to 2007 :P

So how do out more musically knowledgeable members weigh in on the new music's validity?

BAM BAM BAMMMM.... BAM-BAM BAM-BAM BAMMMMM

Wow! Wonderful! Marvellous!

:sarcasm:

Yeah, those Bamms are suspiciously un-Williams.

Posted

It might be Williams, but it's kinda like the other trailers where they added a lot of trailer-type shit to make it sound more "oomph" I guess.

My vocabulary is so fucking extense.

Posted

I think the BAM-BAM BAM-BAM BAMMMMM at the end might be stitched from another cue (should this even be Williams of course)

Posted

Shame the sound quality sucks so bad. Despite that, it's quite obviously supposed to make you think of the Imperial March. There's so little of it that it's difficult to say much else beyond that.

Does it include the extensive thematic breakdown, with timestamps down to the millisecond?

Posted

Sounds like a synth mockup to me. Disney may have commissioned a trailer music house to create some stock Star Wars-ian generic trailer music for their never-ending upcoming slate of Star Wars movies.

Or Williams has deconstructed the Imperial March for the First Order theme, which makes all kinds of sense and is the kind of thing Abrams would probably request.

Posted

I'm honestly sort of hoping that it's not Williams' music. It's fine but it's definitely lacking that special "John Williams signature sound"

Posted

So I shouldn't post my effusively poetic 6500-word reaction/analysis?

Wow. There's a lot more depth to Jablonsky's music than I thought.

Posted

Only to the second. It's shit I guess.

You may need to go deeper.

Well, summer doesn't start till the end of June and yet May releases count as summer ones. ;)

Anthony Breznican said on twitter that there will be no trailer tomorrow or next week. It's expected to hit sometime in "late fall", going as far back as November.

BRIDGE OF SPIES is being distributed in USA by Disney (Oct. 16). I'll bet Official Trailer 1 is on it. Trailer 2 will probably be on GOOD DINOSAUR.

Posted

Crimson Peak is also being released in IMAX on the same day as Bridge of Spies so it would make a lot of sense to put out a trailer that weekend for both those reasons.

Those horns playing the D right at the beginning sound like they're playing at full volume but they've been mixed down so they can be barely heard. It sounds sickeningly inspired by the "epic horns" trope. I think those horns also play a trill between A-Bb just before the end, which for some reason doesn't sound very "Williams" although it could just be me. Tbh that whole thing with the lightsabers turning on in time with the music came across a bit kitsch...

I think it's either:

a very well-made adaptation by a talented musician

or:

John Williams on a bad day.
