  1. 4 days late on this, but it's never too late to pay ones respects. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-26646395 Amazing resumé this guy had. MOULIN ROUGE (1951), MOBY DICK, LOOK BACK IN ANGER, THE ENTERTAINER, LOLITA, THE HILL, THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, OLIVER!, FIDLER ON THE ROOF, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, THE ODESSA FILE, THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, EQUUS, THE WIZ and THE DARK CRYSTAL. Ossie or Os as his friends called him, was one of the earliest pioneers of soft lighting (i.e. what we call modern cinematography) and fog filters with colour film, two decades before they caught on in the 70s. And as TSWCIFTC and LOLITA show, he also a master at b&W. Roger Deakins studied under him at the National Film and TV School and Morris is one of his biggest influences. RIP you genius.

    .

We composers are just more manly than most. We recognize that the natural order is in fact for men to be at the center of attention, with women only in the periphery as accessories to certain emotional and physical needs, and we are not subject to the modern feeling that it is right and proper to submit to feminism and pushes for equality. And we're always endowed well above average. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go shine my wife's boots.

  3. As I've been saying, the soundscapes of the original Matrix are pretty much derived from the works of Aaron Jay Kernis. Awesome, yes, but not really original.

  5. It's worth it, though, because the music is "coming straight from the composers' innermost souls." Williams has been coasting on his outer soul for the last several years, so this will be a return to form.

  6. Unless Shore decides not to use it at all, to explain its absence in FOTR. You could say it peters out before that.

  9. He also did the series as a favour to RTD, after casting him in "The Second Coming". He only comitted to one series, and all concerned knew that. What he was annoyed at (and he would have every right to be) is that somone at the BBC broke the news that he would be leaving, the Monday after the first episode had aired. Eccleston has gone on record saying that he did not leak the information. Eccleston was a brilliant Doctor, and the most "alien " Doctor since Tom Baker. From watching him, one is left in no doubt that this "man" is not from Earth...

  11. Thank god that people like Goldsmith (and even Williams) didn't have this attitude some odd 50 years before. The intellectual stimulus of such concepts (as serial music or 12 tone) doesn't include that now all music forever will be like it, but more that it sets free creative impulses. Techniques of atonal and non-tonal composition are now a part of most composers vocabulary and lots of musical works, especially in something as eclectic film music, profit from it.

  13. I like these Kickstarter campaigns because you can get extra goodies. $4000 pledge gets you a rehearsal-worn turtle neck, PLUS a photoshoot next to a sequoia tree.

  14. Williams has already written two pieces for Ozawa. What is it with their relationship anyway? Ozawa was from the start, a great supporter of the Boston Pops, as opposed to previous BSO music directors who looked at it as a cash cow only, without much a artistic relevance to the main orchestra. He usually attended the late Arthur Fiedler concerts whenever he was around, and when Williams came on-board, they became close friends. Ozawa conducted Williams music with some regularity, and as mentioned some was even written with Ozawa in mind, or upon his request. Williams was also the author of a foreword on a wonderful book of photographs celebrating Ozawa's tenure with the BSO. Back in 1991, Ozawa visited the "Hook" sets upon Williams invitation.
