I have a very nice tradition. 
 
When new JW score is coming, I always bought 200 bottles of beer.
 
When the first sound clips(1.7 seconds) come out( or some photo of sheet music + transcription of the theme) I start my game.
 
Every time I see a negative comment here of that, I will have a beer  
 
And there are many bashers , even a competition, who is first.
 
Always the same dudes, mentioned here, my heroes.
 
But it works, I'm always drunk. Many weeks. 
 
They haven't seen the film, the inspiration for the composer but they know better. I love this place.

Loss of hearing is NOT a symptom, lol. Feel better soon hopefully. It is way milder now as a disease so I'm hoping it doesn't make you feel too bad x
 
 
As for the album.... For the first time in a long time.... Meh? This cannot be all he wrote. Why would you get a full orchestra together for just the first bit of the last track..... That wouldn't happen. There has to be more done with full orchestra yet, it's not here? It's mostly piano, then harp, celeste and strings, one oboe solo in a track and some horns in another? And don't get me wrong, I'm one of the few that has not only Schindler's List in my top Williams scores but Sabrina, Angela's Ashes too and love Stepmom even if it's not in the top..... O.o

Just got back from the film! A really wonderful picture — I laughed many times even though there are plenty of sad moments too.
 
As others have noted, JW’s music is extremely sparse, but there are multiple gorgeous moments. When I left the theater after staying for the end credits, the main theme was running through my head on a loop for about 20 minutes afterward. A beautiful theme, and it really soars at the conclusion of the end credits (in a moment that I dearly hope, and expect, is included in “The Journey Begins”). 
 
If I remember correctly, the lovely solo guitar cue people are referring to is only heard in the end credits.
 
As has been said by those at the premiere, the musical narrative of this film relies heavily on non-JW music. There are a lot of excerpts from (what I assume are) classic film scores. Thus, the OST is likely to paint a somewhat incomplete picture of the film’s musical narrative — though the inclusion of the classical piano pieces does help in that regard. Overall, while I of course would always prefer more heavy spotting for JW, I think Spielberg’s choices of other music are very well done. You really get a great sense of the director’s love for music — both JW and otherwise. 
 
So excited to hear the album in a day — until then, JW’s music will keep running through my head.

That's because on the grand scale of things, and IMHO, it's not really that great aside from a few nice moments.
 
As soon as it was known that this was a short score and not very prominent in the film, red flags went up for me regarding expectations.

I heard the whole thing and I can say it's not generic at all. It's restrained, but very heartfelt. There is a French-like character by the way of JW's own unique voice, so it's definitely not the usual generic and trite tinkly piano scoring that is plastered in most contemporary dramas for film and tv shows. Quite the opposite, it shows you can be very musical and profound by stripping it all down to a few instruments and using a restrained approach. The use of piano, harp and celeste is poignant. It's perhaps JW's most chamber-like score of his career, which makes a lot of sense as the film itself is a chamber piece.

The length of The Fabelmans score reminds me of something Williams said during the Seventh Annual Career Achievement Award in the early 90’s.
 
Back then he said:
 
’I think it could be just as interesting to write a ‘Satie-like’ miniature score which is 10 minutes long. That can be the jewel in the hands of a master as a hundred-minute bombast can be in the hands of a fool.’
