Jaw-dropping. I didn't know that Korngold was actually a sequel to some earlier guy.
Not just the great Reger. Keep digging.

God Youtube comments are such trash.

LOTR quotes certainly don't have the same ring to them.
LOTR > SW but this is absolutely true.

Coming from you, Pil, I find that hard to believe.
Being facetious of course - John is, shall we say, an old friend.

I'm getting too old for this.

Yes undoubtedly very filmic at points. I still remember air conducting the second movement like a dope.

American by birth is hard. But American as in writing in this country for a decent portion of their life is a little easier. This is the first that comes to mind, a work I've loved since childhood.

Not the fireplace! I had a feeling I was remembering wrong.

Happened to flip on John's WOTW. Maybe it's the Saturday evening joint talking but this score is fucking incredible. Some serious rhythmic/metrical slickness here.

It never feels right when it just continues to the shot of Cal by the fireplace without having to change the tape.

TMP is a fine film, it takes some cues from better films and doesn't pull them off as well, but it's still good, and certainly better than any Star Trek content that's been released since 2002.

I can't get enough of this piece. Druckman is my find of the week for sure. I'm not even sure I could explain what I find so appealing about it. The orchestration is very cool, I know that. One of the more successful concert pieces from that time period (80s/90s) I've heard that uses synthesizer as just another texture of the orchestra.
He was one of Newman's teachers. It shows in interesting ways.

One of the very few composers of the avant garde or whatever "ism" you want to categorize him in who really had something to say - and who had a sense of humor. I think that comes through for unfamiliar listeners even if they don't ultimately dig it.

Don't believe the motherfuckers, don't trust them! Let those fuckers die!

For the Holst I recommend Groves with the RPO.

And there's the sexy-ass stuff that Papa G-Smith wrote for the Borg Queen. I'm always fascinated by portrayals of sexiness in music, and Jerry knocks it out here with genuinely sensual material, like in this moment:
The whole track is great, but the rustle of harp and strings climaxing into that high B in the violins? Chills.
Between this and Basic Instinct I think Jerry leads in the "music that turns you on but also makes you feel like you need a shower its so filthy" category.

I share your concerns, I've said a number of times I'm sure that CBS has me very skeptical given their typically milquetoast - at best - tendencies. I would be very surprised if there's much attempt made to respect the actual roots of these characters and the franchise as a whole, so I'm just hoping for something that isn't absolutely dreadful. My reaction to Seven showing up and my wife's reaction to my reaction was basically this meme brought to life.

I had another Franz in mind - Schmidt - but Schreker is apt too.
