Nobody in this thread did anything wrong, people are allowed to talk as deeply about these movies as they want to, especially in a thread in a Tolkien subforum.

It is you who violated the rules with non-productive and off-topic posts in this thread.  Please avoid making such posts in the future.

It's OK.  More a film about movie marketing than anything, and I was hoping for something a little more in-depth on the production itself.

I'm still waiting on a comprehensive "making of" book on Lord of the Rings. I'd prefer something truly behind the scenes, warts and all, but this point I'd settle for a Rinzler-style glossy whitewash.

... and thus the whining about why the rebooted movies aren't as loved as the originals because they're supposedly totally different despite relying on nostalgia and references to those precise movies, begins.

Somebody who is not Tolkien should write the books again.

What an ending! Glad they kept the same music as the game for all the key moments as well (the giraffe scene, the final scene where Ellie asks the truth, then the end credits).

That teaser was gutwrenching though. I've loved the way they fleshed out the backstories of the lead characters throughout the series. More of this for season 2 please!

Not as director, but the fact of the matter is even the Amazon show, which is legally prohibited from using Jackson's work, is nevertheless doing its darndest to pass for Peter Jackson's Middle Earth. You can bet any future films by Warners - regardless the degree of Jackson's involvement - would be of-a-piece with his films.

LOL. Musta hit pretty close to the mark to get you riled up like that!

Well, I think @Chen G. (our resident Hobbit apologist) or anyone who reads the Tolkien Central would be surprised to hear you describe me as a "Hobbit apologist". I think I've been pretty harsh on the trilogy.

But that doesn't mean I can't appraise it in context. And yes, if Peter Jackson did The Hobbit first, as he intended, and released it in 2001 I believe it would have been considered one of the greatest fantasy films to date (i.e. to 2001, as I said). Whether it was the greatest would of course be a matter of opinion. But a survey of the fantasy film landscape prior to 2001 (perhaps you're not familiar with it?) will reveal that it wasn't exactly riddled with classics...though there are a few...and The Hobbit would have stood out the way LOTR did. Certainly, Jackson would have made a different Hobbit then, but even if it were substantially as it is now, it would still be considered ground-breaking.

Anywhoo, you seem really upset, so I'll just give you a moment. Breathe. It's going to be OK.

The Hobbit isn't terrible. If it were made first, it would probably be considered the greatest fantasy film made to date. It's not in the same league as LOTR, of course, and it suffers in many ways by comparison. But I don't think it's "terrible" a film, and I've been one of its harshest critics on here.

But speaking of comparison, if The Hobbit is made to look worse in comparison to LOTR, it's certainly improved, in my eyes at least, in comparison to Rings of Power.

Even though they're really the only substantive, fleshed out stories they have the rights to, I doubt they'd remake The Hobbit or LOTR, too soon (and thank God for that).  And even if they did do a remake, it would, of course, be a disaster, and I shudder to think about how they’d cast the Fellowship.

I love the way fandom works. You make a movie I like = good. You make one movie I dislike, regardless of anything you've done prior, and away with you and don't dare coming near celluloid ever again, or so help me!

Of course there are open storylines to pick back up on, but it's not a cliffhanger in any definition of the word

    My good friend died, yesterday.
He wasn't well known, he wasn't a celebrity, he wasn't a rich man, he wasn't a captain of industry, and he wasn't a mover and shaker. He was my friend, and I shall miss him.
I had known him for over 21 years. We met at work, and I soon found out that his two favourite hobbies were Star Trek, and Star Wars. We had many great times together, and with nary a cross word between us.
His all-time favourite film was STAR TREK II.
I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to watch it, again. If I do manage to watch it, I'll never watch it in the same way.
I loved my friend. I feel hollow. My world is smaller, without him.

Epic trailer music may be shitty, but it has been serving as an inspiration for the actual film scores for the good part of the last decade.

The Last Of Us is phenomenal storytelling for any medium, not just in its base narrative but in its environmental storytelling. Part II, especially, takes the audience down a dark path.

The issue isn't the movies themselves. There's a place for all kinds of cinema (or there should be), including superhero movies.

The issue is all the films, particularly ambitious genre films, that aren't getting made because superhero movies are sucking up all the resources & talent. There's only so many dollars to go around, so many slots for big, tent pole releases. It's going on over a decade now of massive lost opportunities...films we'll never see because it was just easier to make Ant Man and the Wasp.
