Thanks, Amer for posting links to these. I'm definitely not famous, but thanks for the kind words.

The full length version took a while to be finished, but happy to say that Cinematic Sound will premiere it tomorrow and I hope you enjoy listening. Mike is a real pleasure to listen to and his commentary on E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars and Superman are very informative. His thoughts on Close Encounters are particularly insightful.

Thank you for the reminder Tim, I have not bought tickets for this yet but am certainly considering it.  The CBSO concert a couple of years ago was indeed brilliant but this one is much closer to home.

I will be going to the Royal Albert Hall so many times next month they'll probably think I'm up to no good!

By the way, speaking of short moments. Some of you will enjoy this compilation of isolated sections of the orchestra performing 'Harry's Wondrous World'. A Genius of Orchestration!

I went back and forth on that, particularly as the Throne Room Fanfare is referenced at the end of ROTJ's credits. However I felt The Forest Battle is strong enough as a rousing closer and fits the chronological journey which builds to Episode 7.
Ref Han Solo & the Princess, as Jim said it's not approved for performance. Trust me, there were loads of cues I would have liked to include. Battle in the Snow / The Final Battle / Anakin's Dark Deeds / Sail Barge Assault / The Little People Work etc. etc.

Including the interstitial bits surrounding the songs, there are around 20 minutes of underscore in Tom Sawyer, most of it previously unreleased. From my new interview with Richard Sherman, Williams was given a very free hand with the material. They would discuss when to use music, the overall sound, and where certain themes might be appropriate, but by and large he had carte blanche. What may be a revelation to first-time listeners is the darker material on the second disc -- score cues like "Injun Joe," "The Killing of Doc Robinson," "Sworn in Blood" and "McDougal's Cave" -- which is vintage Williams adventure/suspense material. (As I mention in the liners, "Sworn in Blood" even prefigures Hook!) Even in mono form, it's a real treat to hear. And, of course, the album program sounds better than ever in its expanded and corrected form. Overall, this new set is a real treat for both Sherman Brothers fans and Williams devotees! I highly recommend it.

Father Christmas delivered this a few days early for me from sunny Spain today!

I have never seen the film, nor had I heard a note of the score for Tom Sawyer so it has been fascinating to give this its first listen.  Anyone dubious about buying this due to doubts about how much John Williams is in it can rest assured that his fingerprints are all over the music.  In fact if you did not know that the Sherman brothers had written the songs, you would have no reason to think any of it at all was not by JW.

As you might expect, a lot of the music reminds me of scores such as The Reivers and the contemporaneous The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing and even bits of The Paper Chase.  The 'instrumental' versions of the original album on disc 1 play like any other great John Williams score of the era, while the mono sound of disc 2 is perfectly listenable given its source material (and features a number of indispensable 'pure Williams' tracks).  And while it's no The Wizard of Oz, many of the songs are rather pleasant and catchy.  I am enjoying this album much more than I had thought I would.
