That's the thing, though: Part 1 didn't make all that much money. And while that's partially the influence of Covid and Villenueve made an excellent motion picture, its still not the most, erm, accessible of motion pictures. So yeah, I wouldn't be holding my breath for a part three. The thing that really worries me is that, with the propsect of a part three in mind, Villenueve will leave the end of part 2 in an up-in-the-air note.

A big factor for the box office was not only covid but the fast release on HBO Max.

  2. I think removing messages from films is dumb as many or maybe even most great films in history have had some kind of message attached. However I do agree that movies that don’t integrate messages into the story in a good and organic way can become a bit distracting at times.

It has occasionally happened that messages I agree with take me out a movie or show as they seem added by some executive rather than being an organic part of the storytelling.

I think it’s insincere to say that overt messages in movies is the main problem with the lack of box office success fir recent Disney movies as it seems people just don’t care as much about new releases that Covid taught them that they can watch at home in a short while.

    I'm not 100% sure

    • Nothing You Can Take From Me goes after Assigning The Mentors
    • The Ballad Of Lucy Gray Baird goes after Saving Snow
    • The Old Therebefore / Singing At Snakes goes after Rainbow Of Destruction
    • District 12 Stomp, Nothing You Can Take From Me & Lucy Gray, Pt. 1 go after Your Life Has Just Begun
    • Pure As The Driven Snow & Keep On The Sunny Side go after Trust Is Everything
    • Lucy Gray, Pt. 2 goes after I can't Stay Her
    • The Hanging Tree is heard multiple times, but most is heard after Lucy?
    • Can't Catch Me Now is the end credits song

I'm not fully sure about the 2 Lucy Gray songs & Keep Up The Sunny Side

The hanging tree version on the VA album is used twice I think but there is also a third anpperance) when they leave district 12), which uses orchestra alongside the vocals which is unreleased.

The first time the song is heard is when Snow meets Lucy the first time in District 12 (by the tree in the field). Then she sings it one more time but it’s cut short. The third time is the version with orchestra. Then I think maybe it appears a 4th time in the Forrest scene towards the end.

Same here. Cataching Fire is the best score throughout in my opinion.

The last score has some amazing highlights though

Case someone who likes the first score a lot, I think the following 3 scores are definitively better. Catching Fire really introduces so much of the sound and thematic material that is used in the next 2 scores, while retaining the DNA of the first score. My favourite is Mockingjay Part 1 but it’s closely followed by CF and MJ2.

My only gripe with the last score is that there was only one appearance of the Hanging Tree theme. I still think that the Hanging Tree part in the third film is the best sequence in the entire film series, where JNH’s music really takes centre stage. Especially when the choir and the orchestra comes in.

  5. I was listening to Jack Reacher today and the score Krämer wrote (the 2 first cues are good examples) kind of show what kind of sound McQ likes for these types of movies. Balfe’s MI scores have something in common with this sound and I’m surprised that McQ didn’t just ask Kraemer for this type of sound already on MI5 as he can clearly do it.

I personally enjoy all MI scores more or less but Kraemer’s score is definitively one of the better ones (doesn’t beat Ghost Protocol though)!

    Quiz Lady

This is really one of those comedies that is mostly fun because of the two leads. Awkwafina & Sandra Oh are both great here. Both are playing somewhat against type. Awkwafina plays the more calm amd subdued character while Oh is loud and always on. I thought Oh especially was funny. She's always been funny without really trying to be funny in roles in Grey's Anatomy or Killing Eve. But here she's deliberately funny, and it really works. Add to that the terrific chemistry between the two and that is really the best reason to watch this film.

There are also some fun (small) supporting roles by Holland Taylor, Will Ferrell, Jason Schwartzman & Tony Hale. They all do solid work and make sure that the film remains fun.

The script is just okay and the directing is solid, but doesn't add too much to the film.
This film is a perfect watch for an afternoon or evening when you need something fun for 90 minutes.

    NYAD

With a fearless lead performance by Annette Benning, this is a wonderful (if a bit formulaic) film about overcoming boundaries, no matter what age.

It's a remarkable true life story about swimmer Diane Nyad crossing 100 miles from Cuba to Florida. And failing 4 times due to different circumstances. The final time she tries, at the age of 65, is fantastic to watch.

The previous film from the directing duo was Free Solo, another film about one person overcoming incredible odds. Their directing here is again very good. I especially love the way some of the swimming and ocean scenes were filmed.

Like I said, Benning gives a stellar performance as Nyad. Never wanting to resort to the rules that society has written for people her age. Even after multiple near death experiences, she still wants to prove that she is able to do it. Some call it stupid, I admire it.

Jodie Foster is also fantastic as her best friend/coach. Foster is still able to surprise me with her performances after so many years. She is incredibly funny and has so much heart. I actually would say that the heart of the film lies with her. She's the backbone of the film and is always there to suppprt Nyad.

The one thing that didn't entirely work for me were the flashbacks. They were a bit distracting and didn't fit the film. I would rather have had Benning tell us what happened instead of showing. It felt like they belonged to another film.

Other than that, I thought this was great. Very well made and acted and a real feel good story. And we could all use those these days.

    How was the score?

Thing is, you don't need a 'complete' version on CD if the main concern is the complete score. Surely the studio should look at sales of the expanded digital version, rather than judging demand for more music on sales of a CD.

And I definitely won't be buying the CD if it turns out to be the first release. Possibly if it's the expanded one.

I halv no need for the complete release to happen on CD. Digital is more than enough.

Haha, not whining about the release but that first cover is a cropped posted (the character at the bottom is cut from under the arms down) with a huge banner placed at the top. Compared to the work of Titus for some LLL releases it's terrible!

Without the banner, the bottom text would appear underneath the bottom character's arms and his gun.
