Rudy is supposed to be a great film indeed.

L.A. Confidential is the best film of the 90s. It's like a big reward for Jerry, after putting so much effort into thousands of shitty flicks. "You wanna compose 40 minutes of easy noir-styled music and thus get a credit in a film that's better than everything Johnny has ever scored?" It's nice to see Jerry being part of a cineastic masterpiece like that.

But I agree that the scores are no outstanding works in Jerry's career.

Alright, I ordered Bad Girls, Bandolero! Rio Lobo, Stagecoach, Take a Hard Ride and 100 Rifles/Rio Conchos at LLL! Including shipping costs that's 95€, so it's 13,50€ per score! Normally I would pay 150€, so that'd be 21,50€ per score! There is no way the toll is so high that it wasn't worth ordering it from LLL!

Thanks so much, Fancyarcher! Do you have a favorite episode of ours so far? Strengths/weaknesses to comment on?

I quite agree that there should be more composer-dedicated podcasts like this, both in classical and film music. (Are we the first film music podcast dedicated to a single composer? I think so...and definitely the first chronological journey like this. What about classical composers? Is anyone out there going comprehensive in covering Beethoven or Silbelius, I wonder?)

We're definitely excited to be tackling ALL of Goldsmith's output that we can find, no matter what he wrote for. We only decided to put off the bulk of his radio work for later because we thought that would make it take far too long to get to his film scores that people are much more familiar with. But we'll definitely circle back at the end for an Appendix covering everything we skipped.

    Has anyone seen that?

There is a new segment of building a crate. At around 3:57, coming into the new segment, it somehow transitioned into the current Powell's writing style (from Powell's 90s-00s old style). Idk if it is just me, but it feels different.

Then there is a longer suite for Lando's Closet. I dont quite like it. the higher pitch kinda ruins in, sadly

Howard Goodall finally doing a high profile movie is more exciting news, I think (to the extent a JOHNNY ENGLISH movie can be considered high profile).

Cutthroat Island is one of the best scores of all time, IMO.

Clifton Parker has done some absolutely awesome stuff in this area. I think someone already shared his Treasure Island (1950) score, but this one is pretty damn awesome too:

    And some more seafaring goodness:

Oh, and if you like the stormy sea stuff, William Alwyn's Main Title from Swiss Family Robinson is pretty badass:

He also wrote an awesome score for The Crimson Pirate (super fun campy-but-it-knows-it pirate flick long before Pirates of the Carribean did it):

    Yep. Totally missed that too.

But anyway, now that Varése/Concord proved they're competent enough to release perfect sounding film music of men in cowboy hats, I hope they'll take a chance to release perfect sounding film music of men in fedora hats too.

Take a Hard Ride from around 8:00-10:04 is great!

Not to say I disliked the others, these were just the ones that I was instantly drawn to.

I think it great that Universal have decided to go through with this venture. It's so sad to see all this music (no matter the iconicism of it) sit in vaults or archives, boxes in offices etc. I don't really care much for the first few releases, but I know people out there are and future film score listeners will be able to have a chance to hear these scores outside of crappy rips from rear audio channels. An ideal world would see this quality treatment afforded to many scores, not just so people can listen to it all, but that it's preserved for future generations as a piece of our history.

How could I forget one of my favorite of his scores from an equally lovely film?

Makes a lot of sense since the ocean was "the final frontier" throughout almost all of our history until the 1960's.  I get that the sea can be a metaphor for space too.

There's obviously Flow Like Water, but this other piece from Airbender always reminds me of a great voyage across an ocean -

I also love what Joel Goldsmith did with Stargate Atlantis. He gave his music the sound of the sea.

I didn't realize until just now that MG has now scored more films for Brad Bird than he has for JJ Abrams!

Of course, MG also scored many television episodes JJ directed - the pilots to Alias, Lost, and Undercovers, plus 3 additional episodes of Alias.  But theatrically, Bird now reigns supreme!

    Vote now, and vote wisely!

    The Cowboys. Checked.

Now we need a good new expanded set of The Reivers.  I just re-listened to it yesterday, the sound of the 1995 Columbia set is pretty dull.  We could expect better from this score, I'm sure it's possible to do better today. This CD has already 23 years, and so is outdated. With it's sound quality + it's only 1 previously unreleased track, I always knew it was useless to try to find it on the used market.

I really like The Reivers, I enjoy it about as much as I enjoy The Cowboys (though that might change when I finally get my new Cowboys release, if it ever ships). I would love a remastered The Reivers.

Is there anything to expand about The Reivers or is it already complete?

I finally got it. Apart from a cracked case (Why does this often happen?), this is phenomenal. It really amazes me how the Maestro's music is remastered. This was 1972, and it sounds as if it was recorded yesterday. Wow!

Interestingly, Roger from Intrada didn't include Broughton on a recent list of composers he posted who have albums coming soon on the Intrada label, so this could be a Disney Legacy Collection title and not an Intrada title
