Yeah, I thought about that. (It’s a thinker.) There were some bold choices in that script.

They could have showed the audience the stakes—Ed and Kelly (and the audience) find out exactly how the future is changed, and that makes it less of a conundrum. Bolder choice to make them stick to their resolve without having to know.

They could have pulled a Voyage Home and not worry about the damned timeline. (“How do we know he didn't invent the thing?”)

They could have softened the impact by mentioning that, there being infinite timelines, the married Gordon would have lived out his life in his timeline.

They could have given the rescued Gordon a moment of melancholy reflection at the end. But it’s more impactful that he just isn’t there emotionally.

This fall there will be published a new book collection of many of Tolkien’s 2nd Age writings, entitled The Fall of Númenor: and Other Tales from the Second Age of Middle-earth.

    Trade + De Luxe eds.

No new Tolkien texts in here. “This edition draws on ‘Akallabeth’, ‘Of Rings of Power’ and material from ‘Peoples of ME’, ‘Sauron Defeated’, ‘Nature of ME’, ‘The Lost Road’, ‘Letters’, ‘LOTR’ etc.” However, it appears editor Brian Sibley was given a rather free hand to “draw… together many of the threads from the tales of the Second Age into a single work.” “I hope that this opportunity to read, as a single narrative, an account of those years, will provide a new appreciation of … the monumental events of the Second Age.” Great idea!

This review of The Voyage Home Ultra HD was the first thing to make me consider getting a 4K player.

The SLV being only available on 4K is the second thing to make me consider getting a 4K player. I dunno, though, the thing about it being “gone forever” after this limited $100 release that’s going to sell out in preorder, that makes me not want to play ball.

Solo is easily the most enjoyable of the 5 Disney Star Wars flicks for me

Though I still like Mandalorian most of all, but fear they will screw that up in season 3 by making it more of a continuation of cartoon shows I've never seen than continuing to be a story of Din Djarin and Grogu on its own terms

The West End role-playing games are such an interesting point of history for Star Wars canon. From what I understand, and feel free to correct me if you know better, they formed the foundation of a large chunk of the expanded universe in part thanks to their significant influence on Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy. However, they also existed in a bit of a 'wilderness' period for Star Wars canon where it wasn't until Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy that there was a concerted effort to consolidate everything into maintained continuity. If that's the case, then it would explain why that particular part of West End was contradicted down the line as it pre-dated that canon consolidation effort

When Luke is viewing Leia’s message, Threepio asks if he knows to whom she’s referring. Luke says he doesn’t know anyone named Obi-Wan, but knows “Old Ben” who lives nearby in the Dune Sea but is sort of a hermit.

Then at dinner, Luke tells Owen about the message and says, “I wonder if he means Old Ben?”

And also Luke recognizes him immediately after the Tusken attack. “Ben?  Ben Kenobi?  Boy am I glad to see you!”

it is implied that Luke at least knows of him. It can be inferred that they may have met.  Them meeting on this show doesn’t contradict canon.

in fact, the Radio Drama (which was at one time considered canonical) has Luke recounting to Threepio a time when Ben saved him and his friend Windy after getting injured and lost in Beggars Canyon (A children’s Golden Book was published years later, adapting this tale!).  Obi later tells Luke he had intended to give Luke his father’s lightsaber at that time, but Owen got pissed and ordered him to never come back.

Man, the Radio Dramas were damn good. Brian Daley really got the characters and tone very early on.

First season is still my favorite, perhaps starting with episode 4. If you don’t like it after that, I wouldn’t stick with it expecting it to transform into something totally different.

Well if that's your point then you're just flat out wrong that Star Wars has always had haphazard continuity. From the release of Heir to the Empire to The Clone Wars movie the continuity within the expanded universe was a huge consideration and meticulously handled. Any contradictions that arose would actually be addressed and 90% of the time resolved in future media or from members of the Lucasfilm Story Group themselves who took great time and care to respond to fan concerns. The amount of interconnectivity was also insane, you'd be reading a comic set in the Clone Wars and it would be simultaneously referencing events from the Knights of the Old Republic comics, as well as setting up elements for the Thrawn Trilogy which doesn't occur until post-ROTJ

Now, when I say 'to The Clone Wars movie' I don't mean that they just stopped giving a shit about continuity after it came out, but rather the Lucasfilm Story Group faced some extreme continuity challenges. Your favorite person Chen, George Lucas, had allowed people to flesh out the area between the Prequel movies quite significantly on the stipulation that he wasn't going to touch it. However, in the mid 2000s he changed his mind and put together The Clone Wars which completely bull-dozed through the existing expanded universe to the point the story group had to come up with a band-aid fix known as 'T canon' which elevated TCW above all the rest of the expanded universe. Unfortunately, while this means that TCW could continue unfettered by any restraints to what was previously established in the era, other EU stories had to bend over backwards to blend the old stories with Lucas' and it became pretty messy. The interconnectivity remained however, and some of the best expanded universe works came out post-2007 so it wasn't a complete write-off

Come post the 2013 Disney buy-out and everything is erased except TCW. Theoretically, with this clean slate, continuity should be easier than ever to maintain but the values of the Lucasfilm Story Group shifted significantly and no longer was there the same attention to detail in the pre-Disney expanded universe. However, a bizarre paradox arose where they had the ambition to have everything that was created, be it video game or novel, from now on to be on the same level of canon as the movies. This ultimately proved to be an utter disaster and fell into the MCU trap of alienating the general audience by having events in movies heavily rely on expanded material to understand

So, from my point of view when I look at the absolute disastrous state of Star Wars these days I can't help but partly attribute it to de-prioritization of continuity. I also can't help but notice how unbelievably solid it was pre-Disney when that was a greater concern, and how it lead to richer stories and a far more cohesive-feeling universe that also managed to not feel homogenous

That is why I do not tolerate the idea that Star Wars should just continue on the death-march it's currently on because 'that's what it did in the past', because not only is that not entirely correct but it's the kind of attitude that breeds stagnation

The issue is that he's giving rise to those people by setting the precedent that Star Wars has never had strong continuity so it shouldn't value it now. That's really easy to take and run with into 'turn your brain off continuity isn't important for Star Wars'

I wouldn't mind that stance so much if it wasn't built on ignoring evidence to the contrary

To me it's abundantly clear how much caring about continuity is important for Star Wars because some of the greatest works came out at a time that was a significant consideration for the Lucasfilm Story Group, and it facilitated a remarkably interconnected universe that greatly enhanced the overall verisimilitude. It's the reason why 40 years of expanded material didn't result in a complete mess (except for TCW bull-dozing over pre-established canon but that's a different story), and why under a decade of the new canon has. It was even more insane with the rebooted canon to not care highly about continuity considering the new precedent was that everything was on the same level of canon, meaning unlike the EU, contradictions could directly affect new films being made

Finally got round to watching the first episode of the new series. Generally great, although if it's a semi-soft (oo-er... sorry) reboot, I'm not sure the tone and themes in it would be that appealing to a new viewer, interesting though they were. It would be a bit like having had the TNG episode Family as the first episode in the new series rather than the second half of The Best of Both Worlds (and Family was less of a downer than this episode of the Orville).

The music by Kevin Kaska was superb, especially the sequence with the new fighter ship which turned the Adventures of Mutt into space cowboy rodeo music. The action writing elsewhere was dynamic and exciting, mixed upfront but the more sombre moments scored sensitively.  Think I'll take a bit of time getting used to the new version of the main titles music, but nice to have something new to enjoy. Does anyone know if Bruce Broughton did the new version or if it was by one of the series composers?

Looking forward to the soundtrack to this series immensely. I'm not at all sold on shows that have put out an album for every episode (I'm looking at you, Mandalorian season 1...) or absolutely hours of music (Star Trek: Prodigy... good though it is) but if the quality is maintained throughout this season, they could almost justify an album per episode, especially since each episode has a generous run time and will therefore likely have a decent amount of music, else I think the 2 disc highlights per season to date haven't missed anything crucial (I think!).

Enjoyed the 2nd episode overall, but had a few bad issues with it like their lack of caution when entering an alien hive. No suits until after they learned of the danger. And how they saw the admiral morphing into a creature and didn't think to quarantine him in case of exposure of a deadly virus... and no security in sick bay... Also it was convenient that the admiral was the one infected, so he could shut the power off and lock everyone out with his top level codes. And where the hell did the entire crew go when the power went out? Haha they just disappeared. Only the main cast were left for some reason. And I guess this was another classic scifi show cliche when probably 50 crew are dead and they just forget about it and move on. No funeral or anything.

I did love the designs though. Nice creepy (the Fly) type creatures. I enjoyed the premise of a completely dark area of space that not even the Krill dare to go. Nice creepy ideas. Just the execution was not the best.
