Despite being gobby, populist trash, 'Year of the Dragon' still is tons of fun to watch (Cimino at least knows how to shoot a movie). It's a prototypical mission-movie (a cop takes an impossible stand against the hellhole of organized crime, NYC's Chinatown). It's the kind of movie where every time a patron enters a restaurant, a band of marauders enters with machine guns and kills approximately 100 people for no discernible reason, so it's either prophetic or part of the problem. Take your pick.

Not everyone likes how it moves at a very slow pace. In fact, it's probably the biggest complaint people have. How can it not be? While 2001: ASO is unmistakably the granddaddy of modern sci-fi, few movies have tried (or dared) to copy its pacing.

Sorry, Kamakiriad is my favorite Fagen solo.

But all 4 of those albums are GREAT.   Fagen has never once put out a bad album either solo or with Steely Dan.

It's even worse. People say they love 2001 because of its iconic status but in reality they haven't even seen the movie and they are afraid to admit it.

It wasn't that. The real reason was that KM was tired of hurrying to the theatre only to discover that Chinatown isn't playing at all. He always thought we were talking about the latest releases simply because he never talks about old movies. That's why we have two separate threads now.

Because I don't see what it can add to the first one. I've seen BR 2029 twice and it's completely unnecessary. 

One of the problems of BR 2049 are the uninteresting and rather ordinary villains. In Blade Runner, even though most have very little screen time, we could sympathise with their quest for life. It almost made Harrison Ford seem like the real villain of the movie. That particular reversible perspective is gone in BR 2049.

I don't think 2049 has the power to make the same creative impact like the first one has. It will be what 2010 is to 2001.

The best follow-up to Blade Runner would have been not making a follow-up at all.

Over the years, speakers have become smaller and thinner because people didn't like how it destroyed the look of their living room. But to be honest, I don't understand that at all.
