Which film and score do you prefer; Superman: The Movie or Batman? When it comes to the films, I feel Superman: The Movie is the superior movie. For all its atmosphere and distinctive production design, Batman ultimately feels somewhat hollow. As with nearly all of Tim Burton's movies, it is a film of style over substance. I feel Keaton fails to own the role of the Caped Crusader, while Reeves completely owns the characters of both Clark Kent and Superman. The Bruce-Vicki relationship is empty and emotionally vacuous, and while Jack Nicholson's turn as the Joker is entertaining to watch, it ultimately is little more than an iconic celebrity doing his well-worn shtick in a villain costume. All this is not to say Superman is a perfect film, but it has a lot of heart, and I feel it does a lot right, arguably hitting higher highs than Batman. Both scores are excellent and undoubtedly iconic. While I concede that Williams' Superman may be the superior score, I've always preferred Elfman's Batman, which I firmly believe to be his magnum opus, and in my top ten favorite film scores.

Hiya gang. Just like last year, with the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey FILM Discussion Thread, we are creating this thread so people who have seen the film can discuss it (or people who are reading spoilers can discuss them openly), which leaves the existing The Hobbit Film Trilogy Thread clean for those wishing to avoid spoilers until they've seen the film. So, spoiler-filled discussion of the film here, anticipation of the film including new commercials, trailers, posters, promos, ticket purchasing, etc talk there. Enjoy!

It's official now. Apparently it draws inspiration from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Henry Cavill returns, as does David S. Goyer. Nolan is an executive producer. http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/1870/5fzv.jpg Karol

There are some plans for Jurassic Park IV. Spielberg seems to have a great idea, though director is yet to be announced. He said in a recent interview, that if it is made, it will be the last film in the series. I suppose that means that all the dinosaurs will die or something. It seems interesting to see an ending of the Jurassic Park series once and for all. If there will be a JP4, do you think Williams will score it??

A while ago, when I was reading the new Nemesis news on ST.com, I read where John Logan (the writer for Nem.) was going to pen a script for Spielberg to shoot about the life of Abraham Lincoln. I haven't heard anymore developments on this, but I wondered if anyone else had heard this too?

This movie doesn't have its own thread, but Fox has set the original X-Men director Bryan Singer to direct after X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn bailed... again. The film will come out July 2014. First Class cast members James McAvoy (Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), and Nicholas Hoult (Beast) are reprising their roles in the sequel. Returning in supporting roles from the original X-Men trilogy are Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. Hugh Jackman will also be involved, as are Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, and Ellen Page. No word yet on whether Halle Berry, James Marsden, or Famke Jansson will return. John Ottman hasn't been officially confirmed to compose, but since he and Singer have a working editorial and composing relationship... it's only a matter of time before he comes on.

I'm not sure if you guys know it yet, but it seems like Jurassic Park IV has been put by the wayside (for the 100th time) and Universal Pictures has decided to re-release the first film in digital 3D. The re-release will hit theaters July 19, 2013 (Universal has moved the Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion to April 26 from its original July 19 spot). http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jurassicpark3d.htm I know my dad will be happy to see this in theaters again...

As we have done in the past for Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, here's a thread to discuss Interstellar with others who have seen it. From what I can tell the film opens tonight at 8:00 in my local IMAX theaters, so I assume it's the same around the country if not the world. Feel free to post short write-ups in the last film you watched thread or the existing Interstellar thread, the latter of which can be used for more talk about trailers, commercials, reviews, box office, etc - but here is where you can discuss the film in detail without having to worry about annoying spoiler tags. Spoilers are allowed here, don't say you weren't warned!!!

I don't understand why the Hobbit/LotR EE are approved by fans without reservations when the SW Special Editions are viewed as a sacrilege and defile the "theatrical editions" Isn't it the same idea? Isn't Peter Jackson basically identical to George Lucas?

Which, in your opinion, is the most lacklustre entry out of the three most recent franchise prestige damaging movies? I would say AUJ by a considerable margin. Not only is it a shoe-in for the most visually repellent big budget movie of all time, but it also went out of its way to out-bloat the entire LotR EEs and King Kong put together. Never has there been such redundancy in moving pictures and such disrespect for the art of editing. And on top of all that you have a regurgitated and tedious score which makes James Horner look like Morrissey. Edit: I've changed my mind to Battle of the Five Armies after seeing it today.

I'm listening to Billy Boyd's song. And it's beginning to really hit me that this is the end of something significant. I can still remember when I was five or six when my father gave me his copies of Tolkien's work. It's always been such a deep part of our relationship, and of our whole family. Reading the books together, talking about them, being surprised and thrilled when the films were announced. Luckily they were winter releases so I was around to see them with everyone. We went so many times to each. Those films changed my life fundamentally. When we all congregate at my brother's house in a few weeks, I'm bringing the DVDs and we're all going to watch them together again, this time with some added wives and daughters and sons. We'll see this last installment together too. I'm getting a little bit weepy typing this. I'm just glad that I was around for all of this, that I got to share it with people in the ways that I did, that it moved my life in the right direction in so many ways. Whether or not I or any of us get to see more of Middle-Earth brought to life some day, we got this much, and it's been beautiful. Boyd's song is a farewell to all of that, from a man also undoubtedly hugely changed by it. What must Peter Jackson, Ian McKellen, Howard Shore, Ian Holm... all of them, what must they be feeling as this comes to an end? I think now I need to drink too much ale and smoke a few pipes, in the Professor's name.
