Perfume and Nativity Story were interesting. Casino Royale also had its moments. Haven't listened to the Black Dhalia yet.

As for the rest, it was a pretty dismal year for film music.

In no particular order:

. Lady In The Water (Howard)

. The Departed (Shore)

. Volver (Iglesias)

. The Queen (Desplat)

Honorable Mentions: Mission: Impossible 3 (Giacchino); X-Men 3 (Powell); Night at the Museum (Silvestri); Pan's Labyrinth (Navarrete)

Still have yet to listen to The Good German and The Painted Veil and I'm quite sure they will end up on the top spot.

And yes, Serenada Schizophrana is probably the best thing produced by a film composer this year.

It has definitely been a down year for film music. But, like any year, there were a handful of very good scores. Before I present my list, it's relevant to mention the scores I haven't heard in film or on CD. They include: The Good German, Pan's Labyrinth, Night at the Museum, The Painted Veil, Notes on a Scandal, and the Nativity Story.

Top Ten Film Scores of the Year:

10. V For Vendetta (Dario Marianelli)

9. The Fountain (Clint Mansell)

8. Casino Royale (David Arnold)

7. United 93 (John Powell)

6. Charlotte's Web (Danny Elfman)

5. The Descent (David Julyan)

4. The Departed (Howard Shore)

3. Blood Diamond (James Newton Howard)

2. The Queen (Alexandre Desplat)

1. Lady in the Water (James Newton Howard)

My list covers anything composed by a film composer this year

I'll do the same:

1. Grendel (Elliot Goldenthal)

2. Serenada Schizophrana (Danny Elfman)

3. Through Time - Asian Games (Wael Binali)

4. Casino Royale (David Arnold)

5. Pan's Labyrinth (Javier Navarrete)

1. Lady in the Water, James Newton Howard

2. Pan's Labyrinth, Javier Navarrete

3. Serenada Schizophrana, Danny Elfman (if we're including it).

4. The Departed, Howard Shore

5. Casino Royale, David Arnold

I have yet to hear The Queen, Blood Diamond, or The Good German beyond clips. My list will probably be different if I pick up a couple of those.

I'd also like to give The Illusionist a nod for a good title track.

Haven't heard everything I wanted to yet, but so far, The Da-Vinci Code, The Departed, Lady in Water, The Queen, The Black Dahlia were particularly interesting and impressive. And there are a whole bunch of others that made a positive impretion on me. To have a list start and end with Casino Royale IMO shows less the dismal state of film music, than the dismal state of the film music fandom.

1. Serenada Schizophrana

2. The Queen

3. Lady in the Water

4. The Black Dahlia

5. Eragon

2, 4 and 5 are based on my memory of the score in the film.

If Serenada doesn't count as a score, add Night at the Museum on the end as the fifth.

As it stands now...

5. Lost (both)

4. Mission: Impossible III

3. The Black Dahlia.

2. Lady in the Water.

1. Serenada Schizophrana.

So there's no Superman Returns on the list? No Casino Royale? But there are two (or three even) Giacchino's? Strange, but true.

I haven't heard any of The Good German, Blood Diamond, Night at the Museum, The Queen or The Departed yet, so everything might change.

It was a weak year, but not terrible.

Top 5?  I think that I only bought 1 new score from a film release this year.  :)  I need to get out more.

I've only bought two from this year. Now I've bought quite a bit from FSM, Intrada and Varese but that has to do more with the quality of the music itself.

It's been a very very long time since i've been on the message board. Alot has changed but thankfully Stefancos stayed the same.

I haven't heard several of the scores people have been mentioning, but of the ones I'm familiar with, here are my favorites:

1.) Lady in the Water

2.) Charlotte's Web

3.) X-Men: The Last Stand

4.) Casino Royale

5.) Little Miss Sunshine

I really haven't heard more than 6 or 7 scores this year all the way through, and I wouldn't normally consider certain ones for a top 5 list, but I don't really have many options.

In no particular order.

Lady in the Water

Superman Returns

The Nativity Story

Charlotte's Web

X-Men: The Last Stand

Other than those, I've only heard Casino Royale and MI3 from beginning to end. Also, unfortunately, I've only heard bits and pieces of others, like World Trade Center and Night at the Museum. And I'm still waiting to hear others that are supposed to be good, like Newman's The Good German.
