Depending how you count, either four or five times. (I voted four)

1999: Tanglewood on Parade (just a couple pieces from Star Wars)

2000: Tanglewood Film Night

2001: Pittsburgh (film music)

2002: The 70th Birthday Celebrations (two concerts, Saturday and Sunday)

Once. John Williams and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra Salute the Silver Screen. Fantastic. You can read about it on the main page if you want.

Ray Barnsbury-who wants to go again and again and again and again . . .

Just once, back in September of 1989 at The Hollywood Bowl. The show was partly Williams material and a hodgepodge of classic movie themes and various showtunes. It was enjoyable enough, although I wish he had done more of his signature pieces. He didn't do "Star Wars," despite the continuous chants from the audience when he came on for his encore ovations.

I have a bootleg of 2, does that count?

LOL Good one Morn!

Three times, a truly amazing concert experience, ah the adrenalin rush, the emotion........ :)

I saw him with the LSO once in '96, then twice with the same in '98 at the Barbican, London.

Now if only Sony would fill the gaping void that is having no concert recordings (official) on cd and performances on dvd available!

Does PBS sell the tv shows they do? Since Williams has made so many Evening At Pops tv concerts...

Well, I always have 11 Pops concerts, most of them form the early 90's (one is from '84, with Ella Fitzgerald and Winton Marsalis) that were brosdcasted by the Portugues public television channel back in 1996.

0 times. Though if he ever does another concert with the LSO, I'll be there. I did hear the ESB suite live in concert, but that was without the real Williams conducting (still great though). The only time I ever attended a film music concert conducted by the composer was Jerry Goldsmith in London, last year.

I think the LSO should record these concerts and release them on their LSO live series. Those CDs are obviously cheap to produced, too. I guess they'd have copyright problems though. ;)

Marian - hoping to be able to attend Goldsmith's London concerts next year.

:) Interview with the Vampire (Elliot Goldenthal)

:)

Or any other concerts (many composers have this kind of CD compilations: Morricone, Goldsmith,.... why not Williams?)

The problem here is in fact the copyright. They would probably had to pay a small fortune to the studio (not the composer) who holds the rights for the music.

To my knoledge there's no live recording by Mr. Goldsmith available, at least an official one. The ones I know are studio recordings. As the ones Mr. Williams made with the Boston Pops. Nevertheless I have a few private recodings of live concerts by Williams and Goldsmiht. Sound is poor, but is better than having nothing.

Zero. When I met him here in Toronto, he was not here to perform. Oh well, at least I got a one-on-one chat.

That's even better... If I shake hands with him I think I would never wash them again (à lá Bart Simpson).

And I've heard his music live once. This was the Yale University Orchestra, the consuctor was James Sinclair, a specialist on Charles Ives. They played Ives' Second Symphony very well. Also included was three excerpts from Copland's Rodeo and a Symphonic dance from a Portuguese composer called Luis de Freitas Branco (who scored several Portuguese films in the 40's and 50's) and a shorter suite from Star Wars (main title, Leia's Theme, Throne Room & Finale). The encore was Sousa's Star and Stripes Forever. Nevertheless they had some trouble during the main Star Wars Fanfare.

So it seems I have an oficial release of a Goldsmith live concert... I've always been under the impression that this was a studio recording -- no claping, no anoying noises from the audience... And I think that the albuns notes doesn't says this was recorded live.

That Goldsmith album is not a "live" recording. From the notes of the latest issue of the album...

The day after the concert, this album was recorded with the same orchestra

As good as that release is, it not as good as THIS one:

I agree.

Stefancos- who considers it to be one of the finest, and most pivotal releases in history.   :|

As far as Goldsmith releases go, I do really believe that's true. Blue Max has never been greater, Supergirl easily beats the OST recording, and the rest is great, too.

Marian - who hopes that MiniDisc recorder does still work.

People come from all over the world to see him. We always seem to sit next to some people who have come from Germany or Canada or some other state. And it's like a rock concert, people screaming and playing around. If he [lays the theme to jaws some one always seems to scream as it gets quicker. When Superman is played people get lifted up into the air as if they are flying, it's surreal.

With great grief and Sadness  I must join the Zero club. I've always wanted to go but have never been able to justify the cost of going to the place wherever he's going to perform. (The closest being boston)

Brain99_1 - now going to go cry himself to sleep :baaa:

Is that the one when he conducts Shostakovich's Festive Overture?
