Quintus 5,399
It has returned so I watched the first episode of Black Mirror tonight. Meth Damon is Captain Josef Fritzl of the Space Fleet Enterprise in a totally loopy and pretty dark opening installment. It's basically what would happen if a Star Trek nerd had the technology at his disposal to imprison his real life enemies and failed sexual conquests inside a virtual prison which is designed around the creator's favourite Star Trek fantasies. His victims are his crew and he is their captain and god. If they don't play along they are made to suffer all manner of novelty afflictions and fates. Ignore the enormous plot holes and there's some interesting and often amusing material here, but I'm afraid I couldn't really ignore the enormous plot holes for more than five minutes at a time. Certainly watchable, but not one of this show's best.

Quintus 5,399
Black Mirror episode 2, and the end credits told me it was directed by Jodie Foster. Superb instalment actually, the performances from the youths in particular are all round excellent and once again Brooker cooks up a near future parable that stays in the mind a while after said credits have come and gone. I think this guy (known in the UK for years as a savage satirist on BBC 2) is going to take over Hollywood soon. Mad Men season 5 is completed and there's two more left to go. This swaggering soap opera of epic proportions can be absolutely hilarious sometimes, it just so damn fabulous.

It seems to have a rather poor reputation, but I thought it was fine. Not the beste BM ep, but one of the things the series does very well, and that would be much more difficult to pull of a standalone film. I finished the series a couple of days ago. Ep 4 is the standout this time.
idril 86
I really enjoyed Jodie Foster's Black Mirror episode. I thought it was powerful and well-executed. Might be my favourite of what I thought was overall a weaker season.

Marian Schedenig 8,225
To be honest, I mostly just had a quick glance at IMDb ratings and comments, and that was right after I watched each episode, so my impression might be 1) off and 2) not up to date now that more people have watched it. And as I said, I did like it and found it wholly convincing. Metalhead had the lowest rating, and rightly so, though I also don't consider that a failure. It's just a very single-minded, probably pointless, but still well done filler episode. It might be that the season as a whole is slightly weaker than usual, but I was still happy with it. Although I did find the finale to be a bit too loosely assembled for its overall puzzle character.

Quintus 5,399
Episode 4 of Black Mirror was pushing it a bit, as well as feeling like a rehash of ideas from previous, better episodes (one of which was as recent as epi 3). The novelty of two main characters sporting scouse accents wasn't enough for me to gloss over this thick slice of nihilistic silliness; the girl regularly failed the emulation throughout (only the bloke was an actual Liverpudlian, which became a distraction for me). Even so, I do love how one week this show can be in the US with pretty big Hollywood stars and the next it's in the UK with a couple of grim up north regional faces. And in a science fiction series to boot! It's a special kind of quality, that. idril
