1980s movie remakes: 10 of the most ridiculous

Mostly it's just a long - "NO NO NO NO,PLEASE NO!!" from the article writer of that newspaper.

But he may be right............

1980s movie remakes: 10 of the most ridiculous

Immediate reaction from me is a "NO NO NO NO,PLEASE NO" about a National Lampoon's Vacation remake, because I doubt anyone could top Chase's performance in that. But then again, when I first heard of that 2004 movie of Starsky and Hutch it sounded like a pointless idea doomed to fail. When I happened to see it in a situation where there was nothing else to watch, it wasn't what I thought at all,and the parody twist on the series was absolutely hilarious and great fun, so you never know.....

A Top Gun remake which switches genders of the original roles? Yeah that sounds pretty pointless to me on hearing it. The original captured the anything goes material "anything is possible if you put your mind to it" optimism of the 80s so well, that a remake would probably be made "Dark" to align with the mood of the times and have little resemblance to the original. A remake of Conan is 'possible' I guess, but going by the quite bizzare Conan the Destroyer sequel from that era, probably best avoided.

Why is Tron: Legacy cited? The guy is acting like it's a remake when it is clearly a sequel. And his breakdown of it seems like snark for snark's sake. I'm optimistic about the film. At this point, my biggest concern is whether or not Daft Punk will integrate any of Carlos's themes--which they should, IMO. It's probably too much to hope for anything close to the original's techno-orchestral blend, but at least some recognition of the original's score would be welcome, and I think fairly important for strengthening the connection between this film and its predecessor.

Well I guess it's inevitable. I feel there are too many remakes, then I stop and realize how old I am. You look at those films and it has been over 20 years for most.

My only real issue is that they're generally remaking movies that don't need remaking, and sometimes taking the name of a film and using that as marketing while the actual film bears a small resemblance (such as DAWN OF THE DEAD). The best remakes are those that take source material that are either not great, or reinterpret the work the original film was based on (such as THE THING and THE FLY). They're not being remade for any artistic value, it's just to solely make money (this especially applies to Michael Bay's soulless horror remakes).

There are certain franchises I can understand "rebooting", like Conan.

But I do agree with Charlie, it would be ok if these re-boots brought something different to the table.

What I get about the article is that the folks in Hollywood and the bloggers haven't nailed down the definition of a "reboot" yet. It's become the overused happy new buzzword, like "prequel."

As, at this time, am I.

I'd be up for an updated Neverending Story.

Especially if they ever make it to the second half of the book, which is where all the interesting character stuff starts to play out.

Hmm, I'm not so sure. The awful

of The Wicker Man, comes to mind.

I don't really get the motivation for a Tron sequel. I mean, I grew up with films of that era and even I never saw Tron. Most people of this generation have never seen it. The trailer in the IMAX before Wonderland went completely over the heads of everyone in the theater. The complete lack of enthusiasm was hilarious, especially when the CGI movies like Dragon 3D and Toy Story 3 got major reactions. I smell a bomb, frankly.

What percentage of films of the 70s and 80s themselves were remakes? Seemed like such a fertile age for cinematic storytelling and fresh ideas.

I dunno. Tron had a real nerdy innocence and charm all tied to early 80s animation. I don't think that can be recaptured.

I saw Tron in the theatre upon its release.

I think the reviews were mostly favorable and it did a decent $30+ million.

Of course it was at a time with no internet so the hype machine wasn't constant. I know they've been trying to get this going for years so perhaps Disney knows there is money to be made.

I barely remember Tron. I hope to god that Top Gun isn't remade, especially if Maverick is made as a female...NO THANK YOU! That's one of my favorite 80 era movies and needs to be left alone. I'm with Breathmask on The Never Ending Story. While I like the original two hopefully if they do a remake it'll be closer to the book and the second film is actually the second half of the book.

For Karate Kid, I sorta didn't care for it after the second one. However, the new one MAYBE good since it's got Jackie Chan in it and he's one of my favorite actors/martial artists.

Over all I'm getting tired of seeing these damn remakes popping up. Hollywood has officially run out of any fresh ideas.

Hollywood has officially run out of any fresh ideas.

Perhaps. But it could also be an extension of the "Cotton Wool Culture" in ways. Namely, keeping with what is safe and what is familiar, not daring to embrace new ideas and formats for movies that might have financial risk attached. Hollywood has always looked at things that way though as I remember reading that initially they were very hesitant to go with Ben Hur (the later one). It was a gamble, but it payed off big time. Their assumption these days that dipping into the past and remaking past successful movies will guarantee easy cash, sometimes pays off but has also crashed badly a few times too so it could be that their Modus Operandi is in need of a wake up call.

Although him and his movies are not everyone's cup of tea,I do admire how Mel Gibson comes up with quite original and unusual ideas for movies and gets them made seemingly with the wish to see his vision put on screen first and foremost rather than compromising and playing safe in order to guarantee bums on seats.

Apparently Jerry Bruckheimer is in talks with Tony Scott to do their version of Blade Runner. Wether it's a remake, prequel, or sequel has not yet been determined.

Please, let it be Zack Snyder and not Tony.

"Hey bro, I'm gonna make a sequel to your beloved movie."

Blade Runner 2 : Batty's Back!

Blade Runner 2 : One more kiss, Dear.

Blade Runner 2 : All those moments, weren't lost.

Blade Runner 2 : Off the Shoulder of Orion.

Blade Runner 2 : Revenge of the Replicants

Blade Runner 2 : All he wanted was more life,F*****

What would the point of a sequel to Blade Runner be? Don't the androids live only for a very short time? Sean Young's not as young as she used to be, and if Decker was a replicant as some believe, neither is Ford.

Can't be any worse than the first film.

I'm pretty sure Steef is joking. "Hey bro, I'm gonna make a sequel to your beloved movie."

Mark my words, Snyder will remake Blade Runner one day.

Can't be any worse than the first film.

Funny, most cinephiles think it's impossible to remake. The first film has a certain element not even Scott knows how to replicate.

Young's character had no incept date, and if Deckard indeed is a replicant, I doubt he had one either.

Zack Snyder remaking BLADE RUNNER would be like Hans Zimmer reinterpreting Jaws.

Wait, I thought everybody loved Blade Runner and worshipped the ground it trod on?

Nope, not everybody. I consider it an overhyped bore of a film. But that's IMHO, your mileage may vary.

(And I am including all of the 15,302 different versions of it...)

It's pretty much the best film ever. Okay, maybe not as quality-good as THE GODFATHER. But richer and more textually-active movies, there exist not. The best version is either the director's cut or the final cut, but all have their charm, they're just a little less spoon-fed.

How poor Sean Young has fallen from her dizzy heights of the 80s!

Deckard: It's artificial?

Rachael: Of course it is.

Deckard: Must be expensive.

Rachael: Very.

"Blade Runner" has already had 2 sequels - they just haven't been filmed ones (yet).....go check out library - thar be books!

If sequel(s) did get made, I would hope they would use K W Jeter's material.

"There....is.....another......"

Not entirely. The Shaggy Dog has seen a sequel or two, and a remake or two. But Hollywood has yet to break out of the mold and make The Shaggy Cat.

No wait, that would make it a porno.
