But I am thinking that the non-virtuosic means that there won't be, as indy4 said, extremely technically difficult or challenging passages for the soloists, the score by the CSO musician's description pretty much what we might expect from such a historical piece with such important and solemn subject matter, the soundtrack rooted in Americana with 19th century influences.

Just realized thiswill be released on Election Day in the US...hopefully it leaks before so we don't need to pick between listening to Lincoln and watching the news

Nah! Johnny's Cinderella Liberty with those dirty funk tracks is enough to swoon the strongest of women into soft putty in Joseph's hands. And if that is not enough the Paul Williams songs will be the finishing touch.

When I look at the track titles there are several that feature possible period songs. It will be interesting to find out if these are orchestral or choral settings of those songs or did Williams just pick such titles for his own cues?

This is probably JW's best chance fro an Oscar in awhile. It's a serious historical film, it's the only score he's writing this year, the film is being made by respected artists. The only other factors would be a) quality of the score and b) competition. Are there any other films being released this year that could have winnable scores?

Yes. The Hobbit.

A few information about the soloists:

Stephen Williamson (Clarinet)

David McGill (Bassoon)

Christopher Martin (Trumpet)

Daniel Gingrich (Horn)

Robert Chen (Violin, concertmaster)

On a sidenote, I saw David McGill performing Williams' Five Sacred Trees back in 2007 (with JW conducting) in Chicago, when I did my US trip to see JW in concert. He's an incredible musician and gave a heartfelt, wonderful performance of the piece, even better than the one officially recorded by Judith LeClair and the LSO.

I'm sure this score will be full of great solos.

The line "With Malice Toward None" refers to Lincoln's second inaugural address upon his own re-election--it's one of his most famous addresses:

Fondly do we hope—fervently do we pray—that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man's 250 years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said 3,000 years ago, so still it must be said, "the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether". With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan—to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.

I guess this will be one of the film's pivotal sequences, hence it's more than likely we'll hear Williams' main Lincoln theme in it.

I've been saying it since 2005. Lincoln is Johnny's last chance at #6.

Bad Johnny. No Oscar for you.

Now I've just realized this is a real possibility if he's using hymns. But then again the Academy bends its rules to fit whatever the hell it wants to do.

Yes. The Hobbit.

I think they're the only two that are guaranteed nominations.

And even though I've stopped caring about the oscars entirely, much entertainment will result from seeing KM's utter horror at Williams losing to Shore again. Muhahahah.

It is imposible that shore attains the same level of originality in the hobbit than he did with LOTR (specially with so many recurring characters and places added..for the heck of it, so quotes of old themes are-if they comply to hollywood standards-mandatory). so him winning an oscar again for that franchise will be very disrecpectful and unfair to those all great williams sequels that didnt win or didnt even got nominated.

I do not know a lot about the musician contracting procedure in film score world but could be that DeCrescent contracted all the players on the soundtrack, both the few LA musicians featured, such as Randy Kerber, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

I guess that would make sense, as most U.S. orchestras require their members to have AFM membership anyway.
