SyncMan 314
I started going to these things since April. My first was “Batman-Live” with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. I live in the East Coast and this program was not being given anywhere near me, so, I had to brave a cross-coast flight to San Fran--my first airplane ride, ever. The orchestra performed beautifully—the brass section was very strong. I don’t regret my experience. Since then, I’ve attended these: Jaws- Wolf Trap-Vienna, VA Casino Royale-Wolf Trap-Vienna, VA Harry Potter…Azkaban- Wolf Trap-Vienna, VA Jurassic Park-Indianapolis, IN Get Out-Washington, DC Star Wars: ANH- Washington, DC Star Wars: ANH- Baltimore, MD Star Wars: ESB-Washington, DC Jurassic Park-San Francisco, CA I would love to see the following: Aliens-Live Independence Day-Live I’ve started writing letters to the artistic directors representing the orchestras/music centers in my area in my asking them to present these said programs. For Aliens-Live, I worked in a #MeTooMovement angle in my letter. I said that the female members of that movement will give a cathartic cheer when Ripley says the line, “Get off her, you bitch.” Will my pleas be answered? We’ll know during the first quarter of 2019. That’s when the orchestras/music centers will announce their schedules for the 2019/2020 season that begins in September. Some orchestras will have their summer-concert schedules posted during that period, also. Keep your fingers crossed. Thor 7,520
I usually hate these things, but I think I've seen three because they've been part of the Krakow festival programme -- KON-TIKI, PERFUME: STORY OF A MURDERER and GLADIATOR. Back in the early 2010s, all of them (and with the composers present). Slightly more interesting has been a couple of silent film concerts, where the artist performs their own music to screen. There was one screening of BERLIN - SYMPHONIE EINER GROSSTADT many years ago, for example, with music by electronica duo Tronthaim or some such thing. And a screening at the Norwegian opera house of an obscure Brazilian art film from the 30s, with music by Norwegian jazz wiz Bugge Wesseltoft. crocodile 8,019
So why do you hate those? Isn't this the a valid way of presenting film music in concert? Isn't it in fact the ONLY way that actually makes sense? Karol

SyncMan 314
For those of us who go to LTP concerts in New York City's David Geffen Hall: Quote We are thrilled to share major news about our home, David Geffen Hall. The New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center, our partner, will reimagine from the inside out the venue in which we perform week after week. Our goal is to create one of the world’s finest concert halls, a dynamic community space that connects to the outside world in bold and innovative ways. When the work is completed, David Geffen Hall will sound and look better than ever. In the redesigned hall, you will notice many enhancements to your concert experience, including: a more intimate connection to the Orchestra, with clearer sight lines and every seat closer to the stage superior acoustics and increased clarity of sound vibrant public spaces, including a new lobby in which you can join friends and family for a meal or drink before or after the show expanded restroom capacity, clearer navigation inside the building, and greater accessibility an informational Welcome Center to assist with all your needs. David Geffen Hall remains the Philharmonic’s home, though there will be two brief closures while the work is accomplished: May 2022 through October 2022, after which the hall will reopen for a concert season, running from November 2022 through April 2023 May 2023 through February 2024, during which the Orchestra will perform in Carnegie Hall, New York City Center, and other venues around the city. When the new space is ready in March 2024, the Philharmonic will return to a vastly improved home, a place where all New Yorkers can feel a deeper connection to music and to one another. A list of detailed information and frequently asked questions is available on the project’s website, workinginconcert.info, which is jointly hosted by the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center. For further questions, feel free to contact Customer Relations at (212) 875-5656 or customerservice@nyphil.org. Our representatives will be happy to address any questions you may have. On behalf of everyone in the New York Philharmonic family, we look forward to walking with you, hand in hand, during this auspicious time in our history. With many thanks, Deborah Borda President and CEO, New York Philharmonic This may affect how LTP concerts are scheduled during the renovation times--like how many to include in a season, what titles to select. Because we all know they're not there for the music. You know they're idiots when they spend a lot of money to see a film they could see for free at home. Sorry for my mini-rant, but I hate people. I would be afraid that the orchestra makes a mistake, then to look only to find synch problems. I was at a SW:TESB – LTP concert in New Jersey last year and this flute player came in with his part five measures earlier than when he was supposed to. The flute player’s part was supposed to come in during a montage of Hoth battle shots (cannons exploding, snow walkers advancing, snow speeders whizzing by, etc.). Instead, the player came in during the scene just before the montage where R2 is being loaded onto an X-wing as C-3PO says ‘look after master Luke…”. In other words: The flute part, in question, is at the 33-second mark, the flute player at that concert came in with that part at the 25-second mark. I thought that flub was cool—a little bit of unpredictability on my favorite score from an orchestra. That is another reason why I like hearing live performances of these classic film scores. Hearing lots of little details I'd never noticed before (I know this can be said of all of the LTP concerts, but it was particularly noticible here.) It was really cool hearing a live version of African Rundown, rather than the pre-programmed percussion. It's interesting seeing any LTP scores that include electronics and seeing how they deal with/substitute them (Skyfall is arguably even more interesting the CR in this regard). Plus David Arnold snuck onto stage immediately before the credits and appeared in a spotlight playing the Bond theme on guitar.

Tom Guernsey 2,287
Been lucky enough to see a few in London, the ones that stick out being The Empire Strikes Back as my favourite score (at least, if pushed to choose one!) and Jurassic Park (the first score I ever bought). Have also seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Close Encounters, Prisoner of Azkaban, Alice in Wonderland (think that was the one where I got to meet Danny Elfman afterwards outside the Royal Albert Hall for added coolness). I'm sure there are a couple of others but I'd have to check my box of programmes! On the whole the experience diminished for me with the reduced newness factor, and I started noticing annoying aspects like too loud dialogue and sound effects, detracting from the music experience. I would prefer a pure music experience, without dialogue or noise, just subtitles for orientation and full concentration on the music. Otherwise it is not that much different from a cinema with good sound system. SyncMan
