Popular Post MrScratch 294
I don't post here much anymore, but I still do hang around and follow some of the discussions. But I wanted to share something I think you guys will appreciate.... my three year old son LOVES John Williams.I got the expanded and remastered 1941 soundtrack last Christmas and put it on my iphone, with the intention of listening to it a few times and then taking it off my phone. I often listened to it while driving around with my son who was still two at the time. He really took to the explosion sounds and the Belushi line at the end of the credits. He'd yell "Boom!" when the cannons went off and he'd do a crazy laugh when Belushi does his. He started calling the Finale/End Credits the "Boom song". And soon he started requesting it every time we got in the car.But it wasn't just the march that he liked, he started requesting other pieces from the soundtrack. He started asking for the "Butterfly Boom song" which was his name for "The Battle for Hollywood". "Swing Swing Swing" he called "Drums Boom". All film score and orchestral stuff he labels as Boom songs. "Christmas Boom" was the swinging version of Jingle Bells. To Hollywood and Glory was simply... the "other boom song". Ah, the mind of a child.Whenever I ride in the car with him, we have to listen to these pieces. I even caught my wife humming the 1941 march a few days ago from listening to it so much.I also put some stuff from the "By Request" BPO album on my phone to see if he liked any of the other big Williams pieces. He loves Star Wars (which he calls "Birthday Cake Boom"), the Imperial March (which he calls "Darth Vader Boom") and Superman (which he simply calls "Superman" - no boom on that one for some reason). For some reason, he DOES NOT like The Raiders March. Then again, I've never cared for the By Request version of that either, I should probably play him the original LSO version.Funny, I never intentionally tried to get him to like Williams. Like father like son I guess. I don't know how long he'll like it and I'm sure he'll grow out of it at some point but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. Maybe not though, we'll see. He has yet to see Star Wars or any movie that isn't animated.Do any of your kids (younger or older) listen to John Williams? Thor 7,504
Gotta brainwash them while they're receptive! Seriously, though, that is cool. I know that several other parents here have nurtured John Williams in their young ones. Like Erik Woods. bollemanneke
Quintus 5,399
Superman, Raiders, ET, JAWS. That's all my kids ever want on in the car. Especially Jaws, which they LOVE (when I suddenly grab at their feet behind me when the ositnato reaches it loud crescendo).

My own two however have a bloody healthy knowledge of other music for their age and will be able to tell you who the bassist in Queen is or which Beatles song was sung by Ringo Starr. Miguel Andrade 1,263
My boys are just like that. They are now 10 and 12, but they basically care for orchestral music. Actually, the older does not gives a crap for anything else other than orchestral music. He passionately hates all pop/rock stuff. The younger one has a more musical sense, and enjoys a lot of other stuff, but both can be quite critical about the current charts shit. And while I never made a conscious effort to make them like Williams music, I do believe that they look at Williams music as their favorite, just like their dad! Uni 306
Both older and younger, for me. My 21-year old has been hooked on JW for years (I know how to raise 'em). My 10-year old got a tablet last Christmas that's packed with film music from a number of different composers, but he especially loves Star Wars and Star Trek music. Gurkensalat 340
When my son was 3, he liked Hedwigs Theme. With 13 he loved playing Imperial March, Olympic Fanfare or The Duel Music from Tintin in the car. Now with 15 he is more into this Pop/Rock stuff – I hope a temporary regression of the teenage brain.
Once 605
I'm trying to get my parents into John Williams, but it feels like they prefer pop or folk music. Sigh!
