No, this is not the newest "What do you want most to be expanded"-thread. It's intended to be about the OSTs and how sufficient they are as a representation if the film's score. The poll is limited to all non-franchise scores from 1975 to 2005 that are not yet available complete.

 

Rate the albums!

How good do they represent the score?

What are the album's faults?

How necessary is a comple score in order to represent the score properly?

Would a complete presentation add anything new to the listening experience?

Any crucial cues that we must not relinquish?

Is the album maybe completely fine?

I think Williams drama scores are almost fine ob the OST. It's more his adventure, thriller, horror stuff that sometimes needs a better representation. Stuff where every scene has adapted piece of music. His drama scores are more a collection of themes that accompany the scene, without any mickey mousing.

A chart would have been way more compact. But it's not about the poll, it's like the official unreleased music thread or something like that, because I was interested in what the score of Far and Away, for example, has more to offer when completely released.

I started with the poll right away, and then realized it has no end! Then I stopped.

Funny you should mention Far and Away! I recently came across the pirated version of it released (allegedly) from Concord. I didn't get it.

No surprise to anyone, I suppose, that I clicked "I really don't care and I would not buy it" on all of them. By all means release such expansions if there is a market for them, so that C&C enthusiasts will get what they want, but they have no value to me. Every single one of these OSTs are perfect representations of the respective scores (in some of these cases, I've already sampled expanded bootlegs, only to be dismayed and thrown them in the garbage bin).

 

There's also this voice inside me that says such releases would come at the cost of investing money and resources into the far more preferable completely unreleased scores. But I know it's not necessarily an either/or question.

I fucking need ones are, not surprisingly, most of the Spielberg scores as well as the Oliver Stone movies.

 

The rest would be nice to have, but not really a necessity.

I voted with Thor on nearly all of these because they're the boring scores that have decently complete albums already, or they're just not compelling enough for me to care about them.

I currently own no version of Dracula, The Eiger Sanction or The Towering Inferno, so those would personally be the ones I would want the labels to tackle first - expanded or not.

I don't have Eiger Sanction either, so if that were on the poll I'd vote for it as well.  Same with Reivers, Earthquake, Cowboys, and Monsignor.  And a very small handful of the pre-1970s ones, which I'm not too bothered with tbh, but I would check them out.

I was lucky enough to find used copyes of Reivers, Earthquake, and Cowboys within the last year or two online.  Cost me $25-$40 each I believe, but I am happy to have them.  Dracula, Towering, and Eiger go for WAY too much money for me to spend, though.  Monsignor I was lucky enough to get from Intrada while it was still in print there.

 

I wish all the maestro's scores could permanently be in print, or at least all streaming online everywhere.

I definitely need "The Witches of Eastwick", The Oliver Stones, "Amistad", "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds".

 

As for Amistad and WotW: I think once they will be expanded we will be surprised how much more potential they have.

It's a little difficult, but if one has both the OST, and the iso score on the DVD, then I think that you're not far off the complete score. Of course, I don't know what revisions were made, and the OST is a pretty good representation of the score. As an OST, it's much better than his other 1987 score.

Of course Always, Presumed Innocent and Sleepers had music recorded that didn't end up on the OST.  In fact, I doubt there's been a single Williams OST ever that was already 100% complete.

I don't count on a new Dracula release. It would already have been released, if there were no issues finding a source that rings good enough. Maybe a re-rerelease of the OST à la Under Fire or Link.

Many of them are really basically complete.

Amistad would be 40 minutes more to enjoy! There is nothing specific I can think of, but more of that African music is never enough!

The horror scores (Dracula, WoE, WotW) have still a lot of great cues to be released, as well as the Oliver Stone scores!

Geisha, Tibet, Far&Away are scores which I don't know that good, but I can imagine there is one or another important cue missing. However, I don't miss them on album.
