Oh, I hope so! I remember loving the score when I heard it in the film.

Posted

I'll have to give it a spin. I listened to it once but don't remember it that well.

A friend of mine wants to know the music from the beginning of this clip and 3:26 of it:

Anybody know?

So I was about to start a new thread that started with, "Hey, I've got a quick question." Then I got a better idea. :)

Soooo...I just wanted to make sure no recordings of the HP:SS Children's Suite had been released on CD. I can't find any...I've seen performances on YouTube, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing any official recordings. I mean, they apparently recorded the whole thing when they recorded the score itself, and part or all of five of the arrangements even made it onto the OST, even replacing the film versions in some cases, but we still seem to be missing recordings of "Voldemort", "Nimbus 2000", "Quidditch", "Family Portrait", and the second half of "Diagon Alley", right?

Posted

Well, no unreleased music from HP:SS has ever been leaked, used in a video game, or anything like that. Your only bet may be digging through all the various menus on both discs of the DVD.

Posted

Yeah, I've never uncovered any of these pieces in the menus and features and so forth. I figured the original recordings aren't available at all right now...I was mostly just wondering if any other orchestras have recorded the children's suite for albums, since it's commercially available music.

Posted

As DVD rips go SS is a pretty good one though, maybe the best I know of. You can get unreleased cues fairly clean in decent quality.

Posted

There is no unreleased HP music on the DVD menus. I tried that.

We need word on whether Universal is playing unreleased music at Potterland.

Posted

The LEGO game is out soon I think. The trailer uses the music heavily. No idea if it will be incorporated into the game.

Posted

Correct. And the children's suite wasn't written for use in the film, so it can't be ripped there, either. Yet the entire thing was apparently recorded along with the score for the film. The first half of "Diagon Alley and The Gringotts Vault", "Hogwarts Forever!", "Prologue", "Fluffy's Harp", and "Harry's Wondrous World" are all from the children's suite, recorded by the same orchestra at the same time.

Posted

Isn't there some of it on Silva's 2CD Potter compilation?

Posted

"Nimbus 2000" is - I forgot about that. That's the City of Prague Philharmonic, though...'nuff said. ;) Then again, just for the sake of completeness, I might buy just that one track.

I think

features the full "Diagon Alley" as well as "Quidditch" and several others that are already on the OST. But the sound quality isn't great, of course. And "Family Portrait" and "Voldemort" are both missing...

I just really wish this score could get the kind of release it never will. Truly complete, including alternates, source cues, and the children's suite. At most, we could get an expanded release eventually, but a totally complete release seems unlikely, even considering how wonderful the film score labels have been to us lately.

Posted

Well, I can certainly recommend that 2CD rerecording, especially for the POA tracks. Not everything is played perfectly, but the Prague orchestra had already much improved by then. It's much better than some of their older recordings.

Some, not all. Combining the dark forest/spider music from CoS with a rip of the centaur sequence gives a nearly sfx free version of that whole sequence. The great hall/sorting hat sequence can also be extracted fairly cleanly, albeit with some occasional cheers in the b/g. If only this DVD had the stunning rear music mix that KotCS has.

In fact, those two sequences are the only unreleased parts that I really, really want.

However, bits like the troll fight are just buried in sfx, although I always found that sequence a bit musically old fashioned (and actually the whole film has dated badly IMO) so I probably decided it wasn't worth trying to go between front/rear to get rid of more sfx.

Something that's being bugging me since Iron Man 2...

There's a score—I have it my collection, and I know I've listened to it a lot—with a cue that contains a quick quote of the U.S. Air Force song that end abruptly in a minor chord. But I can't for the life of me remember what it is.

Pretty sure it's something big and I'm gonna feel really dumb when I hear it.

I really like that cue...spent a lot of time switching the channels around to get the cleanest results possible. Of course, that was a few years ago, and I didn't have sheet music for it...when I redo my edit soon, it'll be a lot better.

The Right Stuff? Although the cue doesn't end abruptly but it's a short statement.

Just FYI, regarding the HP Children's Suite, I found "Family Portrait" here.

EDIT: Bought both that and the Silva "Nimbus 2000." Both are pretty good performances.

Does the Mission from Amazing Stories quote the US Air Force song?

Not true. The POA extras disc has the "closing the doors of Hogwarts" music.

Can anybody fill me in on the Titanic score releases? I have the OST, and to my knowledge there are two additional releases (Back to Titanic and Titanic: The Ultimate Collection). Can anybody fill me in on the strong/weak points of both releases? Thanks in advance.

Also, I have still yet to identify the music that opens the following clip. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, if we're talking POA now, there's a fair amount of music in the extras, especially if you're willing to sometimes compromise sound quality for the sake of completeness. There's a short alternate cue, the unused (not just used but unreleased) ending of the cue that plays while Harry boards the Knight Bus, and lots of other little snippets. Some of it requires you to cancel out the narration, which works pretty well except that it makes things sound mono-ish...but the results are still better than using the DVD rip in some cases, and in other cases, it's the ONLY way to get the material.

Good guess, but it's not the one I'm thinking of.

I still haven't gotten the Amazing Stories sets, so it can't be that.

Oh well, I'll know it next time I hear it!

I'm not sure what The U.S Airforce Song is, but it sounds patriotic. Is it from "1941"?

Posted

I doubt it's in 1941. I just listened to the OST and played pretty close attention to it, and heard a snippet of The Marines' Hymn, but no Air Force Song.

I don't have the patience to listen to the promo right now. Too much 1941 leads to burnout.

1941 does not have the Air Force song.

The Army, Navy and Marine songs make an appearance in the score during the brawl.

How the hell do you guys get the FSM magnets? Is it a members thing?

No, just by CDs from SAE when they (magnets) are available and they will stick them in your order. Not all of them are FSM related, Tribute Film Classics and SAE have their own magnets as well.

Posted

You could always ask, in the comment box provided by SAE, when you place your order. They don't have a large supply of them. I think they only make so many and once they are gone, that's it.

Posted

Yeah, from my experience it's completely random. I've probably gotten one with a little over 50% of my orders from them.

Posted

I got one with ID4 (my one and only SAE purchase so far) featuring Tiomkin's The Long Night.

I'm about smacking myself upside the head for not realizing why. The United States Air Force was part of the US Army until 1947.

The Air Force Song was originally the "Army Air Corps Song" and was written in 1939, so it existed in 1941 all right. Its words and title were changed in 1947 to reflect the reorg, but it didn't become the "official" song until late September 1979. 1941 came out in December 1979.

I don't think so, no

According to Wikipedia, you did not make it up. That would give John Williams a pretty big role in the scoring of JP3. However they did not list sources.

Posted

He was supportive of Davis' involvement and allowed him to make use of the original manuscripts for the first film to inform the way he wrote the new score, but there was no direct involvement on Williams' part.

Posted

Passive, indirect involvement can often be just as important as active, direct involvement. ETAndElliot4Ever's original question was wide open.

Posted

For all we know JW could have called up Steve and said 'I'm not writing another note for you again until you hire this Davis guy. What do you mean, drunk?'

Posted

The Dinosaur fly-by scene is a bit Williams-esque. I wondered if perhaps Williams collaborated behind the scenes or shared material. Probably just a JW fanboy wet dream. Don Davis couldn't possibly have come up with this stuff on his own. :P

Posted

I'm not too fond of how Davis used Williams' themes at times, although the way the film was edited required him to make some adjustments, but the military styled rendition is awful. And his family theme is too cheesy but Davis nailed the rest of the film, his action music is superb.

Posted

I like half of the family theme, the slower and less repetitive part. It's a little cheeseball, yes, but it works well enough for me. I do agree that the overenthusiastic, militaristic rendition of the island fanfare is just silly, though.

As for the action music...I dunno, I like a fair amount of it, but a lot of it just sounds like a wall of noise to me. It took considerable skill to write, I'm sure, but it gets a little too dense for my tastes. It's like JW generic 2000s action music on steroids, except more annoying. Again, though, I really do like some of the action music. I just have to keep my doses low. :P Moments like the bit when Billy jumps are awesome. Also, I have to say that one of the finest cues in the film is the first one. Really a solid opening worthy of a JP score, as far as I'm concerned.
