Datameister 2,586 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Well, in Williams' case, it's really not a matter of relinquishing artistic control. I say that not out of fanboyism, but simply out of spending a lot of time looking at Williams' sketches and his orchestrators' manuscripts. In some Williams scores, there is truly NOTHING left to the imagination in his sketches. ROTS comes to mind. The sketches are basically full scores in condensed form. Other scores are a little less specific, but there's still enough information there for the results to sound identical, no matter which of his usual orchestrators he uses. For Williams, orchestrators are purely a way to save time. Their job is important, as long as they're doing it right, they don't really affect his sound at all.I don't really know the specifics of Shore's or Morricone's situations, though. If they've found a way to get all the music written in time without an orchestrator to take care of the logistical details, more power to 'em. Based on the fact that Williams seems to orchestrate all his own concert work (and the occasional film score cue), I'd say that's most likely how he'd prefer to do it if he had the time.
Admiral Holdo 16 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Did we ever figure out where the BTTF2 and 3 'releases' came from? None of the usual problems that blight these leaks (sound quality, multiple takes of everything, lack of organization, 5-10 second silences at the start and end), they seem like CD masters.
fommes 165 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Thanks Wojo and Steef - will check one of those suggestions out.Another question: how do you rip a hidden track on a CD to your computer? With hidden track I mean one of those that you can only listen to when you manually rewind the CD from No 1 on your stereo.I've tried it with EAC and iTunes, but they just rip the first track, and not what comes before.

Wojo 2,458 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 If you rip a normal audio CD to your computer, you will end up with every single track, hidden and unhidden alike. The so-called "hidden" tracks are not labeled on the packaging, and may be separated from another passage of music by periods of silence.Think about the five alternate Star Wars Main Titles that come four minutes after the alternate Binary Sunset track normally concludes. The music stops but the digits keep rolling and the CD hasn't automatically stopped yet or "rewound" itself. All you have to do is cut the audio from one track and paste it into another. Audacity can do it for free, as can a plethora of other programs. It's a manual effort, but it's not rocket science.
Jay 46,244 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 You completely missed what we're talking about. We're talking about when the hidden music is BEFORE the start of track 1. It's literally inside the "pre-gap" section of track 1 - the section that every CD player in the world will automatically skip past when playing the CD. You have to start the CD then hold down the "rewind" button to hear this type of hidden track.Any ripping software I've ever used does NOT rip this pregap music.
Wojo 2,458 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Oh. You learn something new everyday. I had honestly never heard of tracks hidden in the "pregap" before -- Hidden Track One Audio (HTOA). There are a bunch of them:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_albums_with_tracks_hidden_in_the_pregapExtracting the audio, however, seems to be based on both the software you use as well as the physical CD drive you use. Some drives simply cannot read audio before index 01, but it seems that Exact Audio Copy can:Exact Audio Copy - If the CD's table of contents (TOC) indicates track 01 index 00 is greater than 6 seconds, the info for track 1 will be colored red to indicate that HTOA might be present. In order to extract track 01 index 00 (regardless of whether it contains HTOA or is colored red), you have to perform either 1. a full image copy, 2. an index-based rip, 3. a range-based rip, or 4. regular track copy but with gaps appended [sic; actually prepended] to next track rather than previous. http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=HTOAI also read something about using the Copy Range function, and extend the start point backwards, but EAC has not worked on either of my computers for years, so I don't worry about it anymore.
fommes 165 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 I own three - "A Place In The Sun" by Lit, "Songs For The Deaf" by Queens Of The Stone Age, and "Songs In The Key of X: Music From And Inspired By The X-Files"Yep it's the last one I'm trying to rip right now. I'm getting the pregap track through EAC, but it's completely silent, so I assume I can't rip pregap tracks with my PC... I'll have to try this evening with another computer.

Jay 46,244 Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 I've never seen a listing of the original titles anywhere, sadly
Xander Harris 9,677 Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Complete edit? I assume from the DVD/BD? Is Pre-Crime to the Rescue clean?
MrJosh 1,205 Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 As clean as I can make it...its not bad besides two moments where the police spaceship thing flies by. I am trying to utilize both front and rear channels though to avoid as much noise as possible as well as clean out whatever sfx I can.

Jay 46,244 Posted May 25, 2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Right - I know the Rykodisc came first in 1999 then the Varese in 2004, but I don't know if the sound quality was improved or not, and which one has better liner note (or if they are both the same)

Jay 46,244 Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 What Koray said. The re-recording released on the OST is better than the film tracks anyway, and one of our labels is bound to re-issue nice 2CD set sometime soon
indy4 160 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Is there a way to change the album order in iTunes? I just bought a 2 CD set, and when I ripped it iTunes put the first track of each CD next to each other.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 You mean the order is like Disc 1 Track 1 followed by Disc 2 Track 1?Add the disc numbers into the info field and that should do it.
fommes 165 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I downloaded a newer version of Exact Audio Copy, and it now compresses to FLAC too. I guess not, but are there any Properties I need to check or so?You can choose between a big amount of bitrates, but is that applicable? If the ISRC codes contain characters like "#" or "&" then your drive does not support this feature.- End of tutorial================================================== ===================================+ FAQ================================================== ===================================Q: What's the purpose of using Exact Audio Copy? Why can't I just use Windows Media Player or Nero?A: Exact Audio Copy allows users to make several adjustments that can result in an exact, bit-identical copy of the original CD. Also, when setup to do so, EAC can automatically generate a detailed log file which contains information about the ripping process and reveals to the user any possible errors. Read here for more details on how this technology works.Q: Why do I need to use this tutorial? Why can't EAC automatically setup everything for me?A: Many of the settings in EAC can not automatically be adjusted because these settings depend on the type of drive that you're using, therefore, user input is necessary. This tutorial shows the basics of what needs to be enabled, disabled or readjusted to result in a bit-identical copy of the CD.Q: Can I use Exact Audio Copy to encode to other lossless formats or Mp3 (LAME) instead of FLAC?A: Yes. You can find a whole host of EAC compression guides here. The main reason for using FLAC in this tutorial is (1) FLAC can be setup to install and configure itself automatically and (2) it has great software and hardware support.================================================== ===================================+ Troubleshooting================================================== ===================================Q: When I press F4 to Detect Gaps, it takes a really long time or completely stalls, what's the problem?A: It usually takes 1-2 seconds to detect a gap for each track, if it takes much longer or stalls then press F10 or navigate to EAC > Drive Option. Click on the 'Gap Detection' tab and change the 'Gap/Index retrieval method' to either 'Detection method B' or 'Detection method C'. Press 'OK' to exit that window and press 'F4' again to Detect Gaps.Q: The Track quality / Range quality is under 100.00%, does this mean that some data is missing?A: No. Under Secure mode, EAC will attempt to re-read a certain portion of the disc when it was not able to retrieve all of the data on the first read, as a result, the Track quality / Range quality will be below 100.00% but this does not mean that the data was not fully extracted after it was re-read. If the Test CRC and Copy CRC for that track match each other and/or the track is 'accurately ripped', then the track is okay.Q: The log file reports a mismatched Test and Copy CRC but the track is 'accurately ripped', what does this mean?A: The track is okay if it's confirmed to be 'accurately ripped'. A possible reason for the mismatched test and copy CRC is that during the test pass, EAC was not able to properly retrieve all of the data, but during the copy pass, where data is extracted from the CD and stored on the hard drive, EAC was able to retrieve the correct data and AccurateRip confirmed this. Q: The log file reports a 'Suspicious position' on the last track, what's the problem?A: If the CD has no scratches or dust on it, it's most likely an incorrect setting in EAC. Open EAC and press F10 or navigate to: EAC > Drive Option. Click on the 'Speed / Offset' tab and, if enabled, disable 'Overread into Lead-in and Lead-out'. Try to rip the CD again and see if the log file reports any errors.I hope you found this tutorial to be useful. Please leave feedback and if you have any questions, e-mail me at music4brainz@gmail(dot)com or leave a comment here. Many thanks to greynol of the Digital-Inn forums for his review and critiquing of this tutorial.
LongTallJodie 76 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I've been compressing to FLAC from EAC for years. In general, the extra options for FLAC aren't that important. You can tweak things to speed up encoding or reduce file size, but at the end of the day, a FLAC is a FLAC. It'll sound the same regardless of the various options. Yay lossless!
Wojo 2,458 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I'm going to try EAC again. It hasn't worked on either of my computers for years -- I don't know, something's installed that conflicts, and I haven't delved into it long enough to find out what. I have about 130 ripped albums sitting that I ripped with FreeRip that have not been tagged yet, so I'll take it on faith that they're ok, and if I can get EAC working, then I can re-rip bad tracks as I find them.
Bellosh 4,531 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Quick question:in "Marcus is Captured/To Berlin" @ 1:19 - 1:34This is Henry Jones Sr. actual theme? It's also heard in "Keeping Up With The Joneses" and at the end of "On The Tank."And no I'm not talking about the Illumination Theme, just specifically Henry Jones Sr.Or is it more a Indy's family theme, the part in /To Berlin" I've always liked to think he wrote that for Indy's mom, it has that sort of feel to it.Any thoughts?
Jay 46,244 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 It's kind of a theme for Henry Sr, but also just used randomly throughout the score sometimes. Williams does that sometimes.
Bellosh 4,531 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 It's kind of a theme for Henry Sr, but also just used randomly throughout the score sometimes. Williams does that sometimes.Yeah, it's also heard at the end of "The Birds of Charlemagne."I'd have to say it's definitely his theme.
Jay 46,244 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 But when it's used at the end of On The Tank, it's for Marcus saying "the pen is mightier than the sword", not because of anything Henry did And don't forget there's the the theme that plays in Keeping Up With The Joneses as well as other tracks that is usually written for scenes involving Henry
