What is your favorite Oscar nominated score by John Williams?
Thor replied to filmmusic's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Easy. I just go down my JW top 10 list. JURASSIC PARK wasn't nominated, and JANE EYRE was a TV movie, so ANGELA'S ASHES is the first title on the list to get nominated, but that didn't win. So ANGELA'S ASHES it is. -

Sorry to hear it. If one doesn't want to go immediately "hardcore" with the 6CD set that Andy and I talked about earlier, the go-to Delerue sampler is Varese's GREAT COMPOSERS 2CD set, which -- if memory serves -- is partially made up of the LONDON SESSIONS discs, or a reissue or whatever (I was never very good at all those label shenanigans, so feel free to correct). It's what I always recommend first when people want to get into Delerue. -

And now David Sanborn, sadly: https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/13/entertainment/david-sanborn-death/index.html I'm mostly familiar with his Kamen work (LETHAL WEAPON, sax concerto), but should check out more.

Fascinating, but somewhat bewildering score for a good film. Here's an ancient thread on it from 2001. Delerue was never really good at suspense and/or dissonance, IMO, so I'm not the biggest fan of that score. Same reason I can't really get into WOMEN IN LOVE. But by all means, it has a couple of great moments. Since Delerue is my 10th favourite film composer of all time, I'd like to think I belong among the "über fans". But I suppose I'm the odd one out, since I tend to prefer his English-speaking titles. I know I'm supposed to prefer Truffaut and all that, but while I like that work fine enough (a track like "Brouillard" on JULES ET JIM is beautifully impressionistic, for example), it doesn't quite reach the pastoral level of later efforts. Be that as it may, I'm not sure which box you refer to? The greatest Delerue set is IMO the 6CD set from Universal France, which covers the entire career. -

The ALIEN FRANCHISE Appreciation thread.

I like both GENISYS and DARK FATE and don't understand the vitriol they're getting. But yes, one should always be weary of industry people kissing each other's asses. Even if they're opinionated, uncompromising geniuses like Cameron and Scott, the proof is ultimately in the pudding. As I said earlier, the trailer for ROMULUS didn't suggest any visionary auteur qualities, but it still looked good. Can't wait! -

That's fine. These days, however, this is SMACK in the middle of the type of music I like to listen to the most (especially if it has LOADS of synth). Give me a hundred smooth erotica scores over one orchestral action score any day of the week.

Well, it actually has been -- and maybe still is -- AGNES OF GOD. But other candidates are vying for the spot, like BLACK ROBE, OUR MOTHER'S HOUSE and THE ESCAPE ARTIST. -

Sure is. Top 5 Delerue for me. -

Yeah, it was a weird facial expression to use for the BFG. I'm guessing it's supposed to mirror the T-Rex roar on the other side, for balance.

Do you have a dog, BB-8, so we can compare for size?

I've never really been interested in erotic dramas and softcore, but they've spawned some AMAZING scores over the years. EMMANUELLE is proof of that. Bachelet's score for the first is drop-dead gorgeous (as is his score for THE STORY OF O in the same period....dig Myers and Zimmer's sequel score too), and Lai's score for the second is equally beautiful. And of course, Gainsbourg's GOODBYE EMMANUELLE has a great cult following.

Yes, great 'facilitator' for future stars. People like James Horner, James Cameron or Jack Nicholson wouldn't have had the career trajectory they did if it wasn't for Corman. Sad news, but 98.....those are some amazing innings.

He, he. Yes, that is a rather farfetched notion. -
That's taking it too far. Yes, the show deteriorated over the seasons, but it still held some value. And the spin-off show, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, kept its quality more or less throughout. While Bear & co.'s music was fine in context, it was not his shining hour or anything. And not something I like to listen to on album. That would be OUTLANDER, possibly BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
