  1. THE FLAGSHIP SHOW: FAVOURITE SCORES OF 2023 – PART 1 https://www.cinematicsound.net/the-flag-ship-show-favourite-scores-of-2023-part-1/ I know it takes me forever to put together these end-of-year roundups, and even though 2023 has been over for four months, I believe these shows are still worth your time. I feature a lot of great music and offer you my thoughts as to why I believe these are some of the best film and television scores released last year. This is the first part of a three-part series. Today, you'll hear selections by Corey Wallace, Blair Mowat, Hans Zimmer, Steve Mazzaro, James Newton Howard, Michael Giacchino, Stephen Barton, Freddie Wiedmann, and John Powell. I hope you can tune in, and if you do, I hope you enjoy every moment! Part two is coming soon... Enjoy!
  2. A journalist never gives up their sources but I will tell you that I didn't have to play the telephone game to get the facts. The facts were then corroborated by another source who had first hand knowledge of the situation. -Erik-
  3. That's exactly what I'm saying. If she was a producer on the film, I might be inclined to agree with you. The project that was cancelled that afforded him the time to commit to Spacecamp, was Spielberg's Peter Pan musical, which was to premiere in 1986. -Erik-
  4. No idea, but there are people in the film score community that have more clout in these parts and on social media than I do who spew this nonsense based on hearing something from a friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone who is a friend of a friend they "trust." Actually, Williams had an opening in his schedule. In the liner notes it says, "Upon hearing about the opening in Williams’ schedule, (Lionel) Newman suggested SpaceCamp, which the studio (20th Century Fox) was set to release, as a final project they might work on together." -Erik-
  5. Doyle's score was rejected because Columbus thought it, as lovely as it is, was far too sentimental. From what I can remember from my research, when writing my script for Williams' 90th birthday show, Doyle was asked to rewrite portions of the score but was far too sick, so his score was replaced by Williams, who was told to tone back on the tragedy of the film and produce a far more restrained score. -Erik-
  6. There were NO directives or limitations from Williams. That rumour is bullshit! -Erik-
  7. Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. I've always planned to do more but just haven't found the time to do them. Haven't said that, I'm glad I was able to sqeeze this one in just in time for it's 25th anniversary! Thanks for watching! -Erik-
  8. The legendary STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE soundtrack world broadcast premiere story as told by yours truly on the day of its 25th anniversary broadcast. ----- On May 1, 1999, Erik Woods had the great pleasure of premiering the soundtrack to STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE by John Williams to the world on his soundtrack radio program, CINEMATIC SOUND. Little did he know that while his show was on the air, the server and network at Mohawk College, the home of C101.5 FM, were dying... and it was all because of this show. Here's the story of how a little soundtrack radio program disrupted internet service at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, for three days!
  9. Nixon, IMO, is hands down the single greatest trailer ever cut with the single greatest piece of trailer music of all time! Nothing comes even close. I think the worst use of Williams' music in any trailer is the Dial of Destiny trailer. -Erik-
  10. I do but I'm away from my house for the next week, so I can't recall the tracklisting for you. You should really tune into my show sometime. You'll find a ton of goodies there. https://www.cinematicsound.net/ep-21-star-trek-50th-anniversary/
  11. The biggest issue I have with Oppenheimer is that Görannson OVER scored it. If the film were better spotted and had less score—they really need to study Patton—I'd be more than happy to accept the accolades that it's receiving. Unfortunately, I felt that the score made the film worse—a film I didn't particular like but really disliked because of the music. The film is scored wall-to-wall with numerous dialogue sequences rendered inaudible because of the terrible mix of the music. Film music should never call negative attention to itself in context, and, IMO, that's what Görannson's score did. -Erik-
  12. Interesting. I'm usually REALLY good at hearing anomonies, but I'm not 100% sure what I should be on the lookout for when it comes to aural artifacts caused by a notch filter. That's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that NO ONE on a John Williams forum is talking about the fact that John Williams won two awards including the main prize, SCORE OF THE YEAR! Instead, all you guys are doing is complaining about what didn't win. BTW, complain away, but man, at least acknowledge the victories as well! And there is no mention of it on the front page on this website. Yeesh! The point of the two awards is that one is an award for a specific genre, and the other is an award to the best score written from Film, TV and Video Games. And just because Indy gets an award for score of the year doesn't mean we hand the award to someone else in the genre categories. That's not how this works. We don't sit around a table and discuss our choices. It's a democratic vote. The score with the most votes wins. Pretty simple. When it comes down to voting, we have over 70 members who all vote for who they consider to be the best in each category. We all evaluate music differently. Someone likes Hook, awesome, they vote for it; if someone likes the Herrmann recording, they vote for it. The one with the most votes wins. And who knows, maybe Herrmann won by one vote over Hook. And I'm sure the other titles received votes as well. I'm not part of the voting committee, so I don't know the results. But that's how things go.
  13. If you think so. BTW, John Williams won two awards including SCORE OF THE FRIGGIN' YEAR! yay! But, hey, let's bitch some more about what didn't win!
  14. Well, I talked to Mike Ross-Trevor about this issue when it was brought up on the Intrada forum, and he said there was no phasing. I'd actually find it interesting to read your take. -Erik- You think you know the process, but you don't. -Erik-
