I have a feeling we'll bee analysing this score for the many months to come

It rewards relistening and analysis, the motif breakdowns already posted here certainly help.

Obviously I totally disagree with your assessment that the entire DOD album is filler but we'll agree to disagree.

He just seems to love to do this. LC was even worse. The album was shorter and actually almost sounded like a different score than the one heard in the movie.

There's 13 minutes of blank space on the c.d. and they still managed to edit out the best part of cues

And there's absolutely  no excuse for the full End Credits not to be on  the OST

No, I think you misunderstood me. None of those are filler. Only Tuk Tuk is filler, in my opinion. ALL the others are masterpieces, which is the point when comparing to Tuk Tuk (not a masterpiece, much closer to "filler"). And, I appreciate and respect your opinion on the the pieces you referenced from DoD. I don't share them. I'm envious as I wish I did. But I am grateful that you shared them with me -- if we were in person together, I'd buy you a beer and celebrate all of the JW awesomeness that we probably do agree on.

You think all of them are filler! No track at all is worth any merit!?  Obviously I totally disagree.

Expecting DOD to be like the original trilogy or even KOTCS is setting yourself up for disappointment. Williams' current style and the modern industry's impact on his scoring technique just won't allow that to happen. But the actual music we did get in this score is brilliant. Just as an example, the trio of tracks The Airport, Battle, and Centuries Join Hands are top notch scoring. Helena's theme and the Archimedes theme is equal to if not better to the themes in KOTCS in my opinion.

No, I didn't place the Raiders March at the very end.  I just wanted to recreate the end credits as heard in the film, which ends with the Archimedes theme.

The adventure was over in 1989 and again in 2008. Little did Williams know in ‘89 that there was going to be a 4th film, or in ‘08 that there was going to be a 5th, yet he ended the scores with the Raiders March.

You’re the first person I’ve seen mention this, and I really wonder why he didn’t end the credits with the March. I suppose in a way it’s meant to make you feel the adventure is really over, any thoughts on this?

I'm seeing so many more people online talking about the score for this film in a positive light, even in more casual corners of the Internet. Definitely seems to me to be getting noticed and appreciated in the public sphere in a way that I never saw so immediately after release with the ST scores, so that warms the ol' heart.

I'm really enjoying the score -- haven't seen the film yet.  I would add that my enjoyment of the album increased after making a minor adjustment: I edited together "New York, 1969," "Helena's Theme," and the latter portion of "Prologue" to recreate the end credits as heard in the film, and used that to close out the album, keeping the first portion of "Prologue" with Helena's Theme as an opener.

I was thinking about Williams' comment that he had to write a new ending. That makes me wonder if the original ending had any cool or epic renditions of Archimedes Theme.

I hope Williams writes a full concert version of Archimedes Theme like he did for Jedi Steps for concerts.

Did I already say I love Archimedes theme? Not enough times I need to bring it up every page of this thread

You know what's funny to me? The theme for Voller is how I expected a General Hux theme to sound like in the Sequel Trilogy. Like John plucked music out of my imagination.

Saw it last night. My initial reaction to this movie is positive—a solid 3 out of 4 stars. Lots of action, very well cast, and perfectly spotted. JW’s score was a gem throughout and I thought it was mixed nicely. Unlike many others here, I didn’t find the lifts or near-lifts distracting or disappointing. Every scene had the right kind of music, confirming that JW hasn’t lost a single step in his advanced age. At least a dozen times during the movie, I caught myself being gobsmacked at the fact that a 90-year-old man wrote every note I was hearing with a pencil on paper. (And, yes, there were a lot of notes to be heard, played on instruments many of today’s film composers appear to have forgotten still exist—like woodwinds, for instance.)

I sort of share the growing consensus here that Indy wasn’t really done right by the plot or script. It was deflating to see Indy broken by the loss of his son and his marriage and worse still not to see him recover his mojo by the end. The story arc, however, did make more poignant and believable Indy’s desire and willingness to remain in the past, and I thought that Mangold did an OK job landing that story beat—although I really wish we could have seen what Spielberg would have done with that, because he would have nailed it.

While we’re on the subject of the third act, the reveal of the Battle of Syracuse was one of the very few times I can recall in my moviegoing experience that I was genuinely taken by surprise and loved it (I count myself extremely fortunate that I forgot there is a track called Battle of Syracuse on the OST.) Mangold handled the uncertainty of that whole sequence brilliantly. Indeed, every shot taking place inside the airplane was basically perfect. (It’ll be a long time before I forget the look on Voller’s face when he realized how badly he fucked up. And then the panic throughout the plane when it dawns on them that their escape window is closing with each arrow hit… I felt like I was going to get stranded in 200-whatever B.C.) I felt stakes in a movie for the first time in I don’t know how long. More stakes than I’ve ever felt in any MCU/DCU movie. More than I felt in the entire Star Wars sequel trilogy. It was bliss to feel that in a movie again. That alone was worth the price of admission.

I just went to see the movie, and lucky me! There was a super loud beach party at the public swimming pool next to the theater, plus, the sound volume of the movie was low. The experience was near-ruined for me especially during the quieter moments because of all the bawling and boom-boom-boom noise.
Anyway, rant out of the way, I really liked the movie, and I thought the climax was handled quite well (I had feared much worse). There could have been a lot more tomb and cave exploring, ancient riddles or booby traps for my taste, but the action was good. I did notice many interesting snippets of music not on the album; funny enough, once again the climax moments of finding and using the MacGuffin are not released, like so often before. Here it's not as regrettable as in Last Crusade, though.
