Wow, there are some very heavy string passages that I did not see coming. Very interesting, powerful new arrangement. Seems almost oppressive in feeling.

Wow, nice of him! Has Elijah ever been in a movie scored by JW?

I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong.

Indeed! Such a hopeful and somehow harmonious piece, interlaced with short periods of trouble and danger.

    I love it!

I wouldn’t even categorize these as rumors - nothing is sourced on that website.  It reads to me like pure speculation.

Gosh, that mini-monologue about regeneration, right before she forges her own sonic screwdriver (which was awesome too), was just lovely, wasn't it?

I think it's neat to separate the Doctor from the TARDIS, but I hope it's not for too much longer.  Still up in the air if that reunion happens next episode or not.

ALSO, am I supposed to be wondering what the ball of regenergy that came out of the Doctor's mouth was about?  Is that a dangling plot thread that will come back?

His earlier reviews are completely different because he was reviewing games he was duped by as a kid. They weren't fun, but the gaming industry certainly wasn't what it is today and it's reasonable to assume these games were simply made to entertain AKA distract stupid kids that would just stare at the screen and mash buttons.

Not convinced by the score so far. We'll see how it goes over a few episodes, but so far my fears that under Chibnall's direction the music will take a backseat and get reduced to atmospheric synth soundscapes seem confirmed. Sure, Gold was over the top, but in my mind that was often the part that sold the over the top scifi elements. There were a few moments during this episode that felt understated to me and might have worked better with a more extrovert score, like the reveal of the Doctor's new costume.

Aside from that, it looks good. I pretty confident I'm going to love Whittaker's Doctor, and the new companions seem likeable enough. The story wasn't anything special (basically a remake of the first season DS9 episode Captive Pursuit), but all the character stuff was there. Chibnall's previous episodes were mostly unremarkable anyway, at least as far as their stories go. I'm hoping he'll compensate with a strong season arch.

Loved the episode, there wasn't much music that stood out to me, but that's fine as I think they might go with a less thematic driven score, more atmospherics. I'll miss Gold's orchestral symphonic writing though

The Docter, male or female, it doesnt seem to matter. Whitaker did all the things you would expect a new Doctor to do in a first ep.

I think everyone felt the same way about Gambon stepping in to "replace" the inimitable Richard Harris, but I might be in the minority here on the position that Gambon brought something to the role that made him 'Dumbledore', or at least a facet of what I envisioned him to be in the books. I think there was warmth in his performance (particularly in Half-Blood Prince), but most of the way his character was handled saw him involved in a way which didn't lend well to much personalisation. He was grouchy and irritated because that's what the direction required. As I was reading Deathly Hallows when the book was released, I found myself reading Dumbledore in Gambon's voice, with his mannerisms so to speak because, for me, he embodied everything I saw Dumbledore to be.

I think it's unfair to point to that moment in Goblet of Fire when he almost tackles Harry as the moment that defines Gambon's portrayal (as many online appear to do) because it simply isn't. There's a certain vulnerability and restraint he plays on in the rest of that film that shouldn't go overlooked.

When Dumbledore and Harry journey to the cave I couldn't imagine Harris standing upon that rock or doing much action at all, resigned to positions that catered to his age and health - much like the late Christopher Lee was in The Hobbit films, bathed in CGI.

To wrap up my thoughts of Gambon as Dumbledore I'd say that despite the slight differences in portrayal from the books, he still was an actor in the series that could command attention and remained one of my personal favorites since him taking over the role.

Rowling did choose Kloves based on their mutual preference of Hermione over Ron and gladly enabled him to devolve Ron into dumb comic relief and make Hermione pitch perfect, starting with the first movie already.

The core casting for the most part is definitely one of the best things about the movies. Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman are now completely inseparable from their characters.

I remember a scene where Harry and Draco were in the bathroom together and I couldn't even tell what was happening. They could have been blowing each other for all I know.

Yeah but the books depicted Hogwarts and its universe as brimming with magical details at every turn. You don’t need the characters to react to the magic, but it goes a long way including it. Every frame of PoA was teaming with little moments of magic, whether it was the time transition sequences, a cup with a spoon stirring in it or an enormous giraffe racing through the portraits on the staircase (all of which was treated as mundane and “of the world”). None of the later directors had much interest in this kind of filmmaking and the films suffered as a result.
