Edmilson got a reaction from Smeltington in John Powell - THELMA THE UNICORN (2024)
I love Atonement from Supremacy, probably Powell's best "adult" cue. Overall though the Bourne scores work great with the movies, but they are far from the kind of music I like to hear in action movies.

And yeah, scores like Evolution, Agent Cody Banks, Solo, are as entertaining as his cartoon scores - sometimes even more than them. These are live action movies but without the dour and serious atmosphere of his thrillers so Powell has a lot more room to write the kind of expansive orchestral movie he does for the cartoons.

Also, am I the only one here who likes X3: The Last Stand? It's "dark" Powell but the action music is so fun. I enjoy it very much. How could I dislike Powell + LOTR choir + John Williams' prequels + Don Davis' The Matrix?

Nice! It’s such a relieve to find most of them, including almost all of the highlight cues, are solo Powell 😊

I LOLed when I saw it. One of the dumbest things I've seen in a while. Apparently some people will need therapy after watching this very normal-looking thriller and the studio want them to go to their website before whining on Twitter.

I honestly can't believe that after 7 years they chose only the most boring and stupid ideas for a sequel, like Elena blackmailed into divorcing Alejandro, Alejandro becoming depressed and alcoholic and with an annoying kid.

But then again Mask actually had competent screenwriters behind it, while Legend was written by the same dudes who regurgitated Transformers, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Cowboys & Aliens and that Tom Cruise Mummy movie that no one saw.

Martin Campbell may be a competent director, but he needs a good script (see also GoldenEye, Casino Royale). Otherwise, we get The Legend of Zorro and Green Lantern.

Edmilson got a reaction from JTN in David Arnold to score Amazon's Good Omens 6-part TV Series (based on Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett book)
I think every major Hollywood composer has had to work even having children at home. JW's children were kids in the 70s and he was a widower but that didn't stop him from writing all those disaster movies, Jaws, Black Sunday, The Eiger Sanction, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Superman, etc. If that was good or not for his kids' well being is an entirely different conversation...

JNH had his first kid during the recording sessions of Wyatt Earp. Randy Newman had to step in for him while he was at the hospital and, when he returned to work, the orchestra played a lullaby for him (a nice story that is on the Wyatt Earp LLL liner notes).

So I don't think that's the only reason... Unless Arnold is one of those people who found more satisfaction in being close to his family then on working on big budget movies, and if that's the reason I have some real respect for him.

What about the prequels? Anakin and Padme's romance in Attack of the Clones would've been even harder to take seriously without Williams' Across the Stars.

He had to work extra hard to make people not to cringe even more with that movie.

The only people who actually remember movies like Jane Eyre, The Fury, Dracula, Monsignor, Far & Away, Spacecamp and such are us Williams fans. Otherwise, had they had a mediocre score by some unknown composer, no one would talk about them in 2023 (unless those people obssessed with oddities from the past).

And I guess this is more true for the older movies in his filmography than the new ones. Despite stuff like The Patriot, Stepmom, The Terminal, etc., not being classics, some people still have fond memories about catching them on cable or DVD or whatever. It will take a little while before they fade out from public consciousness like 78 Dracula or The Eiger Sanction.

Here's the thing: if the score to DoD is nominated for the Oscar, I'll use Lorne Balfe as my avatar for one month. And if it somehow wins, I'll use the Balfe avatar for a whole year.
