MikeH reacted to crumbs in STAR WARS - Live To Projection Concerts
Wow, TFA was INCREDIBLE by the MSO. Simply blown away by their performance and handling of the score's most demanding sequences. Their performance of The Falcon bested the edited mess in the film and received a rousing applause from the audience, as did about 10 other significant cues.
Their Main Title was superb, also superior to the TFA version (IMO) and their performance of Jedi Steps and Finale was the perfect climax. Not one person left, everyone stayed seated and applauded for a solid 4 minutes after it finished.
The thing that blew me away was that it almost felt like a new score actually being able to hear so many details in the score that were simply obliterated in the mix (both the score mix itself and the lackluster film mix). I heard so many trademark little, signature John Williams Star Wars-isms that are totally inaudible on soundtrack due to the overbearing focus on brass. I have to say, the orchestral balance was superb and really allowed each section of the orchestra to be heard. It was a revelatory experience hearing the score this way and only makes me lament I can't hear an isolated version of their performance ever again!
More than that, it just makes me so angry about how shit the score was treated in the film mix. The score is alive and breathing when you hear it in equal measure with the sound effects and dialogue. Everything else remained perfectly clear (subtitles were unnecessary) despite the score easily being 50% louder than its equivalent treatment in the film mix. I can't stress this enough, it actually brought scenes to life in a way I've never experienced before watching this film.
The conductor himself attended a pre-performance discussion of the score where they dissected the primary new themes. It was the Art of the Score podcast team and they teased an upcoming 2 part podcast for TFA (to be posted before TLJ). Was so much fun to geek out about all the little details that we're obsessed with here on JWFan. We're not alone! And the countless people humming Rey's Theme as we exited the venue will attest to that.
Oh yeah, I'm really happy with the way they smoothed out the most egregious microedits throughout the score. The Falcon was definitely cleaned up, as was the Scherzo and they fixed that terrible edit in Farewell and The Trip (where the Rebel Fanfare is chopped in half). It now plays properly and they shortened a small section immediately afterwards.
The mini-Rey's Theme which begins Act 2 was an excellent touch I thought, but it really made me lament the deleted Parade Grounds cue! That would be the most incredible opening cue for Act 2 had they not dialled it out. Oh well, just another questionable decision by JJ.

MikeH reacted to Josh500 in Which JW theme would you like to have expanded into a concert arrangement?
Not exactly. 3 minutes seems fine.
It's mostly because the best rendition of Rey's Theme by far, which plays during the End Credits, is not included in the Concert Version. The Concert Version pales in comparison with that mind-blowingly spectacular arrangement.

Does it sound unobstrusive? If not, it's not the real thing.

We've all been fooled. The Post will be fanfares and fugues and TLJ will be subtle Americana.

MikeH reacted to karelm in THE LAST JEDI - Potential OST Album Track list posted to reddit (UPDATE: It's fake)
Nah, JW's 85 is like an ordinary mortals 65. His brain and endurance is top notch and he is so revered by the suits that he gets to review all music from projects he isn't attached to if it deals with Star Wars music. Gordy Haab said all music for Battlefront II had a six week review cycle which included 2 weeks for the game developers, 2 weeks for Disney, and 2 weeks for John Williams if he wanted to review any of it. He is still very much involved in any detail he cares to weigh in on.

MikeH reacted to Unlucky Bastard in Jaws VS Jaws 2
Jaws 3, not really. Not a bad score in its own right though. Jaws the Revenge is my most listened-to Jaws score. I like it more than 1 and 2.

Is Setting the Type going to be a Home Alone-style orchestra and synth drum pad montage cue?
