JW did a great job in CoS, I guess it's just the way new scenes and known music are put together that reminds me way too much about the first movie, but the score is incredible. HP3 is a weird entry: I initially loved its soundtrack way more than the previous ones, but now I think it's a pity almost all the old themes were discarded. So even if HP3 is one of my favorite scores, I think it would've been perfect if it kept (or hinted at) some of the old themes. HP1 is the perfect one in my opinion; as for HP2, it has great new themes, but the rest (not the themes, but the cue structure) is quite similar to HP1. Don't get me wrong, it's good to reuse old material in a sequel (especially with such good material!), and I love some of the variations, but when I choose between the first two, I always prefer to listen to HP1.
For me THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN is like THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK of the POTTER TRILOGY. Its fantastic and brilliant.

So that's James Horner #2 from the remaining slated releases. Now hoping that we get Apollo 13 in the coming months.

Another source to me has confirmed his condition is stable and they are waiting for clearance from the Doctors so that he can return home. So that's some good news for now.

I believe he has been hospitalized in London. He has canceled his appearance in the London RAH concert.
Also the Vienna concert has been canceled.
Wishing our beloved Maestro a speedy recovery and good health.

Also Night Journeys was played at Boston Pops by Keith Lockhart for the eventual album release.

One would think it was planned like that!
Yeah. They are also playing the End Titles from DRACULA in the Concert.
Does anyone know what are the Dracula cues have been played in a Williams related concert before? I think 'Night Journeys' is one.

Mike Matessino just confirmed on the FSM thread about incoming details on the DRACULA D.E. release :
And more details will likely start circulating Friday.
Which is great timing with the concert in London.

I'm guessing they found a second generation stereo 1/4 inch stereo downmix or something.
Very curious to find out if the OST assembly on disc 2 was recreated from scratch using the same elements as the film score presentation, or whether they found the original OST master and remastered that?
The quality difference is striking... albeit I'm comparing to YouTube clips of the previous OST release. Matessino has struck gold here. Congrats to Mike and the team at Varese on this holy grail!
From the samples it looks like a 3 channel stereo mix tape (Left, right and center). What ever magic Matessino has applied kudos to him for making it sound so good.

For some reason, I forgot for a long time that Dracula is one of the Williams/LSO collaborations. Probably because the OST CD sounded so muddy! So great to have this epic collaboration finally given its justice.
You must be real glad to have this set now. It was the grail of your collection. I'll be glad to toss out my old Varese cd.
if you and other JWFANs are in London, it would be great if you guys did some sort of a panel discussion in hotel lobby if Mike Matessino is also attending?
1 hour ago, crumbs said:They've uploaded a new sample in place of that broken link. They now have For Mina in the film music presentation.
I'm not familiar with the score but whatever the sample includes it seems to have a clean opening and ending. It seems to match the opening 2:13 of the equivalent OST track, yet the overall track is 7 seconds longer in the film presentation.
I guess we can deduct that Matessino kept the chronology of the OST track (perhaps a Williams request) but added separation between the two cues, hence that track's longer runtime -- 7 seconds longer than the OST track. This means they can be separated and placed in chronological order, if preferred.
Also, unless I'm mistaken, there's a section of previously unreleased music in the sample of Dracula's Death which sounds as good as the surrounding music, so they seem to have found a pretty good source for this release.
I was actually watching the movie in its anticipation over the weekend and noticed how clear the music sounded on the DVD release (as compared to the awful muddy Varese cd). Although some cues are lost in the beginning of the movie behind the sound effects. I also noticed some cues were dialled in late which means there was indeed more music not used in the film. So I'am glad this set will address these as well,
Most eager to learn how this 'lost Ark' was resurrected and restored by our dear friend Mike Matessino.

Iam happy to learn that a newly-mastered-from-a-new-source presentation of the originally soundtrack album as Disc 2.

No, but it was a good representation of the score, unfortunately in muddy and distorted sound.
Remember the US cd release had two cues omitted and only the Japanese Warner release contained the full album presentation. I obtained a copy some years ago. I still play it. And on a personal note the OST was the doorway for me to soundtrackdom and John Williams way back in 1980.

Superman needs 3 discs? That they put the source music for the 1st movie in the 2nd/3rd movie set implies otherwise; they wouldn't have made that sequencing choice if the first score had 3 discs of room.
Yes. If they decided to include the OST cd on disc 3. I'd like that. It would be nice if the OST album master got remastered.

A Potter trilogy set doesn't fit into this slate.
Keeping in mind that Superman and Schindler's List are probably in that mix.
Of course, I'm assuming a "title" means a single film. I don't think a trilogy of scores would be referred to as a single title.
Superman 4k blu ray is coming out in Week 1 of November. I suspect the LLL Superman set is ready to fly as a 3cd set.

It's like they loved the experience of buying their favorite scores so much, they want to re-create that joy!
That may be disturbingly true.!

I hope for Doloroes Claiborn from Elfman, Air Force One from Goldsmith, Brainstorm from Horner, and anything they can get from Williams
You make a probable point of every other title from the composers mentioned and yet cant pinpoint for Williams despite the season in which this batch is set?

I don't think so. He also expanded the expansion of The Omen and that one had as little music missing as The Final Conflict.
You think so? Well, in this case he said it himself on one of the facebooks postings a while back. So that's why I'am saying that. He kind of indicated there are other Goldsmith projects that he wants to prioritize. I think this was around or before the last batch we had.
-
I wish it has Jerry Goldsmiths THE FINAL CONFLICT. Although I think Robert Townson has zero interest or priority on this title. Lets hope AIR FORCE ONE is finally out. Also James Horner's BRAINSTORM original film score recording and the OST cd .

I was very impressed with the Debney, when I first heard it. I thought that THE HELICOPTER SEQUENCE, was particularly faithful.
Close enough but not entirely faithful. Some orchestration is different; flute and piccolo parts were substituted by brass. Brad Decter orchestrated the score as this was done via reconstruction. If I remember correctly.
I loved this album. It got great mileage from me.

If it isn't Apollo 13 what other mid 90s Horner score is out there, since Roger had hinted on a couple of Horner titles that are expected before year end ?
