Order of the Phoenix is my least fav. book because Harry is so whiny. But it's still a great book, great villain, and great story, but Harry irks me so much.

Books:

3) Halfblood Prince

4) Goblet of Fire

5) Order of the Phoenix

6) Philosopher's Stone

7) Chamber of Secrets

The more I read DH, the more brilliant I think it is. It ties up all the loose ends so satisfyingly, with such emotion. Chamber of Secrets is a good book and has some of my favorite parts, but overall it's just a little too whimsical for me. I hate the flying car storyline - it makes no sense, even for a Harry Potter book. It makes me sad to put PS so far down on the list - the first chapter is one of the best of the series; I guess it's a testament to how much I love all the books.

Films:

1) Deathly Hallows – Part 2

2) The Prisoner of Azkaban

3) Deathly Hallows – Part 1

4) Halfblood Prince

5) Order of the Phoenix

6) Goblet of Fire

7) Philosopher's Stone

8) Chamber of Secrets

I think I like DH2 the best, but I need more time to give a definitive answer. Prisoner of Azkaban was previously my favorite, by virtue of the time turner storyline, the Marauders, and Lupin. For the most part, I thought the movies got better as the series matured.

Scores:

1) Prisoner of Azkaban

2) Philosopher's Stone

3) Chamber of Secrets

4) Goblet of Fire

5) Deathly Hallows - Part 2

6) Order of the Phoenix

7) Halfblood Prince

8) Deathly Hallows – Part 1

My answers for the scores may change as I get used to the DH scores, but the top three likely won't change.

I'm a huge fan of every film and book! Even the bottom entry on my list is among my favorites.

EDIT Philosopher's Stone? I don't know how I didn't notice that. Why did i use a European's post as a template?

Funny, how looking at other people's lists makes you think.

I think it's hard to judge the books in retrospect, without being flawed by the movies...time to read them again :)

Books:

1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

6. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

7. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

If the first part of Deathly Hallows wasn't a bit weak (they're still fighting like they're ten years old at times), it would have gone for top spot I'm sure. Number 3 and 4 could have switched places easily too: Half-Blood Prince is awesome for its mythology, but Prisoner of Azkaban is thematically richer (as the search for the father).

Films:

1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Prisoner of Azkaban by a landslide. The only film that's truly a film rather than just a film adaptation.

Scores:

1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

4. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

6. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

8. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Desplat is pretty high, despite Yates's obvious intervention. From number 3 on, it's the same as with most of the films: it could have been so much better: Desplat should have been given free reign, Williams could have done more with Chamber of Secrets given time, and while Doyle's is very entertaining and fitting, his action music is a let-down compared to other scores of his.

I only read the first couple books. I got bored with Azkaban and never read any others.

My favorite score is the original. It's my favorite thing to come out of the entire Harry Potter franchise. JW's music and the Wizarding World at Universal. Way cooler than the movies.

SCORES

Williams > Doyle > Desplat > Hooper. Best Williams score is Azkaban imo.

BOOKS

1. Prisoner Of Azkaban

2. Sorcerer's Stone

3. Goblet Of Fire

4. Chamber Of Secrets

(big gap)

5. Order Of The Phoenix

6. Deathly Hallows

7. Half Blood Prince

The first 4 books have a beautiful balance of tone between introducing more whimsical/funny/magical bits, and also showing the backstory and the growing threat of Voldemort. In POA for example, on the one hand there's Hogsmeade and the Marauder's Map and Patronuses, on the other hand there's Dementors, and the whole story of Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. The first four books are also mysteries. And they get longer out of necessity... because the mysteries, and the big climactic revelation scenes, get longer and more complex. POA and GOF are really masterfully crafted.

The last 3 books are needlessly huge, and less cohesive. They also get oppressively dark. And the mystery/twist elements (e.g. Draco using the Room Of Requirement, Snape being the Prince, the true allegiance of the Elder Wand) didn't impress me as much.

FILMS:

1. Prisoner of Azkaban

2. Sorcerer's Stone

3. Deathly Hallows Part 2

4. Goblet Of Fire

5. Chamber Of Secrets

6. Order Of The Phoenix

7. Half Blood Prince

8. Deathly Hallows Part 1

Really did not like the Yates films barring Hallows 2. They are like summaries of the books... unintelligible if you haven't read them, but disappointingly disjointed and shallow if you have. Hallows 1 is where he takes this to the extreme, the whole film is just a series of emotionally disconnected vignettes or tableaus with no discernible arc.

The early Columbus films stand the test of time more and more in retrospect.

Cuaron is a genius of course.

The only Harry Potter film where I wasn't yawning or looking at my watch was Prisoner of Azkaban.

Although in all fairness I only saw the first 3 films in the theater. I've seen bits and pieces of Goblet Of Fire on TV. Haven't bothered with the rest.

As far as the music goes:

Prisoner of Azkaban

Sorcerer's Stone

Goblet Of Fire

Chamber Of Secrets

Concerning the books, I labored thru the first 3 chapters of SS and tried the first few chapters of the second book. I glanced thru Deathly Hallows and I felt as if I had taken a step back to the 70's when I was reading the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and any other children's series books.

Books

1. Order of the Phoenix (it may be fat and bloated, but I certainly got lost in this book, and it's one of those rare cases where the heavy anticipation more than delivered)

2. Prisoner of Azkaban

3. Philosopher's Stone

4. Goblet of Fire

5. Chamber of Secrets

6. Deathly Hallows

7. Half-Blood Prince (zzzzzzzzzzzzz)

Movies

1. Deathly Hallows Part 2 (reminded me of ROTS where you feel like the last few entries were struggling to get to the point)

2. Prisoner of Azkaban

3. Order of the Phoenix

4. Deathly Hallows Part 1

5. Philosopher's Stone

6. Chamber of Secrets

7. Half-Blood Prince

8. Goblet of Fire (graveyard scene is the only bit with re-watch value)

Scores

1. Philosopher's Stone (just a lovely classic)

2. Prisoner of Azkaban

3. Goblet of Fire

4. Chamber of Secrets

5. Order of the Phoenix

6. Deathly Hallows Part 1

7. Deathly Hallows Part 2

8. Half-Blood Prince (well it's not terrible, but not memorable either)

Can't really elaborate, as it's been so long since I've read any of the books, but I recall Order of the Phoenix as the pinnacle of the series for me -- I think the middle three books are Rowling's best work.

As for the movies, I stopped watching after Azkaban, which I enjoyed enough to see twice in the theaters.

Music? Prisoner of Azkaban by a long shot, though large swaths of the score are deeply lackluster.

Movies.... I'd have to watch them all again to rank them properly and I have no will to do so. I will say this though, I think the magic and warmth of Hogwarts was lost throughout the later films. As if there was a concentrated effort to show the least amount of Hogwarts as possible and its traditions.

I haven't read any of the books (I guess I was too old), but film-wise, I thought the best was HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.

Music-wise, there is PRISONER OF AZKABAN by a mile. It's really in a league of its own.

That was the whole point, though, I don't get why people complain about this so much. Even Chris Columbus said last year that the David Yates films reflect his vision of where he always wanted the movies to go. Loss of innocence is one of the major themes of the series, and the stories of the books became less and less about the magical feasts and ghosts and moving paintings as time passed. A ghost here or there would have been nice, but the mythology and grandeur of Hogwarts was always going to take a backseat after Voldemort's return.

I didn't listen to any of the scores after Goblet. I heard snippets of Hoopers music and it sounded dreadful. I do plan on eventually listening to Desplat's.

You should make Part 1 a top priority. I feel that like with Williams' Azkaban score, there's just so much depth and richness to the score, and if you don't like the more "atmospheric" parts -- the action cues will knock you on your ass.

Desplat is so much better than Hooper. If we had gotten Desplat for Order of the Phoenix onwards, we wouldn't be complaining about how underwhelming the music was. Then again, it's a JW fan board, so even Desplat scored the last four films most of you guys would still bitch about how better Williams would've done it.

Not well versed enough to construct a list but I for one am impressed by the Harry Potter franchise, they have maintained quality and dare I say improved over time. Deathly Hallows was as good as anything in the series. Kudos to JK and film crews. Star Wars didn't do this (prequels? :crymore: ) nor any other series; Pirates, Matrix, Raiders, etc all faltered after strong debut.

I sort of agree with you. All of the Potter films have been very agreeable and the overall enjoyability hinges on the direction and script adaptation. Even though Sorcerer's Stone and Goblet of Fire have their cringe-inducing moments, they're still better than most sequels and prequels these days.
