nightscape94 965
There is so much going on in the movie emotionally with Rey and Luke, and Rey and Ben, and the resistance, that adding more information about Rey's parents would have been too much. Now with only one more film in the trilogy, it's one less thing to have to worry about. Personally, with so much emphasis on lineage, like with Vader and Luke, and Luke and Leia, and Ben and Han, why continue to mess with people in the same way over and over again. Sure, but they seem to be setting Poe up as the new leader, taking over from Leia. If Fisher hadn't died my guess is Ep 9 would have dealt with that. 1 minute ago, nightscape94 said: There is so much going on in the movie emotionally with Rey and Luke, and Rey and Ben, and the resistance, that adding more information about Rey's parents would have been too much. It also makes sense from a franchise point of view. Disney wants to make a LOT of SW movies. So it makes sense there's removing it a bit from the Skywalker family drama. Which was never my favorite aspect anyway.

I thought it was great that Rey's parents were nobodies and new Force users can come from anywhere. It's like muggle-born wizards in Harry Potter Yeah, I can see that point for sure. In this world so far, lineage has played a huge role. I am not opposed to the whole "muggle morn" idea being carried over. I just like the lineage aspect of Star Wars. I also do like Kylo being the main villain - I just feel Snoke was wasted and never really given any weight. I never felt like, "Oh, Kylo has stepped up and either taken or inherited the role from this great evil power. It just seems like he took over for the guy who was main villain because the movie told us he was. He never had any weight to me. The "who's Rey's parents" thing was the most baffling aspect people latched onto and I'm glad TLJ didn't give in to fan service in this aspect. I appreciated this as well. On another note, I also liked that they didn't kill off Leia. It seemed apt and even respectful, playing true to character/narrative over circumstances. Though I wonder how they'll deal with it in the next film. It'll probably start with a big time jump.

I don't mind that he was included, or the general idea that he can still force ghost up and talk to people, but he LOOKED terrible (what happened to the old puppet!?), he SOUNDED terrible (Frank Oz apparently forgot how to do the voice, he just sounds like Miss Piggy now), and the dialogue they had him say was THE WORST. His weird-Yoda-speak is indeering, but somehow in TESB and ROTJ they found the perfect amount of it to use in those films. In the prequels it started to get to be too much ("Around the survivors a perimeter create" is atrocious), but here it was almost ALL bad lines. I actually had to stop and use my brain to decode some of his sentences, which never I thought Frank Oz died years ago!
