Movies you should see but probably haven’t

rough cut

He was nominated countless of times but only got his first Oscar in 2007 for The Departed, which is a lesser Scorsese movie, in my book. It doesn't even feel like a Scorsese movie.

I hate Shutter Island but Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas are Scorsese at his very best.

May I add: Casino, Silence and The Wolf of Wall Street

Besides, there is: Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence and The Irishman

And let's not forget... oh man, this reminds me again of why Scorsese is my favourite director.

Casino was good but drag a bit in length IMO, same for The Wolf of Wall Street. I completly forgot Cape Fear (silly me) and haven't seen the other so far, but clearly intend to

It is not, just watch it a second time and you'll see.

I've watched it already five times in less than three years, and it flowed better than the other I've mentionned

I've said it many times on the forum, but Age of Innocence is my favorite Scorsese movie and it's not close.  I read and loved the novel first and when I saw the movie I was just blown away.  One of the most creatively successful adaptations of a novel in movie history.

Guys, guys, guys, you're all forgetting Scorsese's best film.

I know, but I'm the only one in the world who happnes to think that. The funniest thing is, it's also his most underrated! In fact, it's so massively underrated that nobody here has even mentioned it.

At university I got to see Barbara De Fina (producer of Age of Innocence) and Jay Cocks (co-screenwriter) give a talk about how they approached adapting the novel and the problem of adapting novels into films in general.  It was very interesting and cool.

I've seen After Hours in the theater and I remember I was disappointed that it was a comedy. Haven't watched it since then. Not that I didn't want to but somehow the movie never crossed my path again.

You should. It's good. Peter Gabriel's score is fantastic.

The sequel is superior, the 2nd to last temptation of Christ: Merchandising.

The Last temptation was only slighty better or worse than mel gibson jesus snuff film.

Hugo is made for kids.

So yeah, Joe, draw your own conclusions! ;)

Someone dead inside like you cannot appreciate this film.

I never thought of it as a film for children, I see it as a homage to film history.

I have to say, Alex, that I'm with Joein, this one.

It's a little like saying "Star Wars is made for kids", or "E.T. is made for kids". Well, fuck that.

Oh he says that. What he sees as a weakness. I see as a necessity as you get older. Imagine not having an inner child how terrible that must have been,  how sad how pathetic.

Well, aren't they?!

But I just find it funny that the one time Joe likes a Scorsese movie it happens to be yet another kids movie.

When will Joe grow up? ;)

(and no, Joe, kids love horror movies too)

I just discovered that there's another Scorsese that I haven't seen (or maybe I just forgotten that I have). Anyhoo, it's a movie that rarely gets mentioned ...

There are these movies, that come along somehow like kids movies, but are actually a little bit too scary or weird for little kids. Like "La Cité des enfants perdus" of Jeunet et Caro, BfG goes a little bit in that direction and Hugo as well somehow. Usually these films are not very successful because they sit somehow between the chairs.

I forgot his name but a composer/music teacher once said in an interview that it's usually the adults that have a problem with atonal music (weird), not the little children.

Could be. Dissonant music is usually used in movies to accompany unpleasant scenes or events, especially in horror movies and alike. Usually kids don't watch those movies, so they are not conditioned like us to connect this kind of music to bad events.

Exactly. Children are by nature open-minded. The problem is that parents and TV are trying to push children into a direction which they think is suitable. In Belgium most parents think children should listen to K3.

When I was young we didn't have K3, I listened to the music my mother and other adults were listening to. Same for movies.

Still I can say, how ever openminded kids are. Mine have been and are partly still reacting quite sensitive to a certain kind of images in combination with certain sounds in movies. Film makers like Tim Burton like to include some kind of nightmarish images and events into their "kids movies" that particularly scares the shit out of sensitive kids. And these are kids, that have no problem watching an Avengers movie where super heros beat each other up. But when it comes to the monster under the bed or the old one-eyed witch, they cover their eyes.

My nine year old had nightmares after watching "Amadeus".
