Jerry was a master. It takes a little more time to realize it with him than with John, but if you listen long enough it will inevitably come to you.
My favorite Goldsmith story is of his struggles writing the lush, romantic theme for Medicine Man (which makes its finest appearance—and one of his finest moments ever—in "The Trees"). He spent two weeks suffering major writer's block, going through iteration after iteration, theme after theme, attempt after attempt. Nothing worked for him. One evening, at the end of this fortnight of futility, he sat blankly looking through the few dozen themes he'd composed. At the bottom of the stack he found his very first attempt . . . and instantly he knew that was the right one. It had been there all along. He'd just forgotten about it.
And he was right. It was the best theme.
This has got to be the single unfunniest, most pointless video I have ever encountered on the internet.

I'd love to see this turn up in Tadlow's Goldsmith recording project. Though it hardly will - my idea would be to replace the synth horns with decent brass (I have a feeling that they're mostly there because the real orchestra's brass wasn't up to the task).

I know this video has been posted before and doesn't begin to cover Goldsmith's career, I still enjoy watching it. A nice tribute.

Since this is a John Williams site, it is only fitting that Maestro Johnny do the honors of paying tribute to his late colleague:

Heh heh. John Williams is the "sixth" of The Five Wizards. I don't know his Elvish name but in the common tongue he is known as Turtleneck the Black.

Saw the movie last night. It was good but it should have ended around 1:45-2:00 hours in. But no...it drags towards the end. I contemplated getting up and leaving.
Jerry Goldsmith's Under Fire cue (Nicaragua) played in one of the coolest scenes in the film. I hadn't seen this thread, so I wasn't expecting it.
The music starts around 0:45 into the Nicaragua track. Quietly And it builds and builds. Until it takes over the entire film's soundscape. You are basically hearing nothing but Goldsmith's music for a solid three minutes.
And you wonder, is he going to take the music to its finish? Or is it gonna stop here? Maybe here? Here! No...here? It's gotta stop here. It's gotta. They're probably just using the tense march bits of the track. Right?!
Nope, the music accompanies the scene right to the last note of the track. And it's sublime. I would not be surprised if the visuals were cut in service of the music.
As a film music fan, and a Goldsmith fan hearing Goldsmith on screen again, just sent chills through every bone in my body.

    44. Bunnies of doom takes on many shapes and sizes, and can even take on human disguises, but they are particularly renowned for impersonating beautiful women. Common belief in Middle-earth was that any woman encountered alone, especially in the dark of night, could be a bunny of doom. Here's one common disguise they always assumed:

I don't know what you people were expecting, back in '99 THE MUMMY (along with 13TH WARRIOR and MULAN) was a firm reminder how to score brawny Hollywood adventure flicks and i can't really remember any big adventure score since that has bettered these, mainly due to the fact that nobody (and that includes JW) can write such no-nonsense and still excitingly colorful action music.

The First Great Train Robbery - Jerry Goldsmith. A refreshing change from what I usually hear from JG.
Favorites from this score are "Double Wax Job", "The Gold Arrives", and of course, the "Main" and "End" Titles.

I thought it would be heavily laden with synths (like Legend which I thoroughly disliked) but here the synths are nicely balanced with the orchestra and it's does not bombard you with too much noisy strange synth sounds. It's perfectly listenable and one of JG's more beautiful light sounding music.
