It's a good piece but very straightforward (in that regard a precursor to the likewise very stripped-down action material of Tintin). No match for the baroque spectacle of ToD, which is still JW's best in that vein.

The Book Thief is far from a middling score.  It should have won best score that year.

I can't make any comments on his motivation. But yes, it sounds 'phoned in' in both BOOK THIEF and BFG (even though both have their moments). Can't say the same for THE POST; he's firing on all cylinders in that one.

Similar to this. I find BFH serviceable but unremarkable. The other two barely blipped on my radar.

I reject the notion that The Book Thief, The BFG, and The Post are "middling" in any way.  Shame on you!

This score is full those high lights. Wonderful score. Top 3 JW in my book(hopefully not to be stolen🤦‍♂️)

Thanks. Agree with everything written there, but I don’t see why that makes it so great *in comparison* to his other post-2005 output. This is a bit off-topic, but I remember you saying in another thread that you listened to TLJ just 2 or 3 times - is it really enough to form such a strong opinion on it? For me, the score has been on repeat for the past 1,5 years and I still can’t get enough of it. The OST album is not an ideal presentation, I will admit that.

I've always loved this track from "The Book Thief"! It's a perfect example of JW's mastery at musically telling a story... This cue starts out sounding uncertain, sad, melacholic, and generally negative (a bit reminiscent of A.I.!), but halfway through (at 0:43) it changes suddenly and dramatically to sounding bright, hopeful, joyful, and generally positive. Another one of JW's brilliant moments! I remember being very impressed by this when I heard it for the first time...

Learning to play a theme from The Book Thief on piano a few years back (Five years ago tomorrow!)  really increased my appreciation for that theme and for the score in general.

One purpose of this thread is to make me (and others, who feel similarly) more enthusiastic about these 3 JW scores and make us go back to them.

So which are your favourite The BFG score moments? Which stand out, in your opinion?

The score is okay, quite good, but yeah, I also dislike the movie. What a waste of talent (Williams, Spielberg, and Hanks - couldn't care less about Streep)! Such a self-serving, hypocritical, and somewhat obnoxious movie...

The Book Thief is a lovely and intimate score. I would think of it more as a hidden gem than a “middling” score.

BFG, it's solidly mediocre and listenable.  The other two don't do anything for me.

The Book Thief is a masterpiece.  It's like a Faberge work in musical form.  Precise, simple, yet complexly crafted.

What an extraordinary album this is! I was eagerly anticipating it and I haven't been dissapointed in the least.
I understand and adhere to the criticism regarding some of the playing. Mutter is an extraodinary violinist, but many of her stylistic choices usually make for performances that are far from being my favorite.   That being said, the greatest thing for me about this whole project is that these arrangements actually exist at all. It's an unexpected gift to have JW himself revisit some of his compositions at this point in his career. His work is marvelous and in the future they might be played and recorded by any number of musicians. So for me, this performance may not be ideal in every respect. It sounds amazing and you can tell Mutter did put a lot of dedication to the project (we should actually thank her tenacity that Williams took the time and effort to produce it). And while I may not like some chocies to me that doesn't take away from the fact that these arrangements exist and we get to enjoy them.
I can't wait for the Deluxe edition, particularly to hear what he did with Princess Leia’s Theme. I am bummed, however by the exclusion of Witches of Eastwick, sincce that is one of my favorite JW pieces (especially the piano/violin arr.). Here's hoping for a second album!

Well, the magic is also in his 2010's scores, it just isn't so obvious and underlined. Wonderful stuff.

Either thing is weird but at least most of JW's early career was sex movies, westerns, rather masculine pictures, not a Disney space movie for children.

If it's not Williams, it's one of the finest JW impersonations I've ever heard! Details in the orchestration, little melodic and harmonic turns--esp. after the 40sec mark--are hard to imagine anyone else doing.

You should listen to it some more. Even if you think it's the weakest of the 8 so far, it's an enormously rich and wonderful score, and really rewards re-listening.
