Jay 37,368
Interesting - Mike Matessino didn't produce this - the album was produced by Robert Townson. MM was just involved with mixing tracks 17 and 18.EDIT: Mike Matessino just let me know he actually wrote the liner notes for this release! Great news!Hum... So does Midway count as one of the 2 upcoming Williams releases Mike said he worked on, if he didn't "produce" here?Yes, this is the title Mike referred to in my interview. Hlao-roo 389
This is going to be another Family Plot, which was surprisingly unsuccessful.Varese needs to up the ante on their hyperbolic promotional blurbs. Wojo 2,453
Purchased. Seems historical enough, and while I like the march that's on the Boston Pops album, I am familiar with nothing else of this score (other than the samples, which curiously didn't reference the main title march). MissPadmé 17
Track 17 & 18 hmm Interesting, since both film-recordings were available in Stereo on a Japanese Version of the "Filmworks" Williams Album - maybe the Stereo-Tapes got lost back then? Luke Skywalker 1,795
shame they couldnt do this before tracks 17 & 18 got damaged-destroyed-lost.1998 could have been a good opportunity Track 17 & 18 hmm Interesting, since both film-recordings were available in Stereo on a Japanese Version of the "Filmworks" Williams Album - maybe the Stereo-Tapes got lost back then?the marches are tracks 19 & 20. sadly since what you said could have mean we had all in stereo... Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
This wasn't one I particularly wanted. Hell, I expected it. But I'll take it.I have the re-recording and Boston Pops CDs. Interesting that the released tracks from rare Japanese Filmworks are still necessary to own for true stereo?? I figured with a complete release I could now totally avoid seeking that one out.Anyway, bring on more Universal JW scores. The best are yet to come. Jay 37,368
The two tracks from the Japanese 45RPM LP, which are the same tracks on the Filmworks compilation, are tracks 19 and 20 on this new Varese CD, not tracks 17 and 18.This release is as complete as it could be. Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
Well, SpaceCamp was already rare before Intrada reissued. Plus, maybe that style of JW fantasy 80s score is just more popular than 70s drama.

ZackR 95
But SpaceCamp isn't a holly grail.SpaceCamp is a nostalgia thing for a lot of people though...at least it is for me. That movie came out when I was six and I loved it as a kid...kind of like The Goodies. Regardless, Family Plot is terrific and I just ordered Midway. pixie_twinkle 48
Spacecamp is also a bloody marvellous score. I'm as surprised as anyone that Family Plot didn't sell out immediately, but that doesn't change the fact that there's a magic and mystique surrounding Spacecamp that I'm sure contributed to the fast sell-out time. It really is one of the "Holy grails" of Williams scores despite Ro's claim to the contrary (no offense intended). The "grail" status is mainly due to its ridiculously hard-to-find release on a Japan-only label. I was lucky (stupid?) enough to win one of those original Japan CDs on e-bay about 11 years ago. It's still a treasured posession. I've never seen the film, but I've adored the score since I first bought the vinyl back in the early 90s. It has a real sense of wonder and magic to it. It may not be one of Williams' absolute best scores, but it's one of his most heartwarming and dreamlike. It's also one of my absolute favourites.Midway: Ordered! Miguel Andrade 1,263
I always thought that the re-recording does sound good but is slitghly to "heavy".Meaning? While the tempis are very good the sound of the orchestra seems for me a little bit to forced in some cues. It's one of the best re-recodings one can get but I'm very happy that the original recording are released now.The Williams recording has some kind of clearer structure (based on the samples) and that's what I like. But I have to admit that Men of the Yorktown March sounds beautiful on the re-recording.Thank you for the clarification. I agree that the re-recording is great, hence my question.

Wojo 2,453
Then Varese must strike an unemotional dissonance with me.How long's Family Plot been out? Incanus 5,715
Well you could always take it as the initial rush of buyers that slows down after the first wave. Or it could sell like those proverbial hot cakes. Who knows. The comparison with Family Plot is a bit unfair since it was a pressing of 5000 units and still relatively obscure to the larger film music audience even if it is the last Hitchcock film score and one of the completely unreleased JW scores from the 1970's. If Midway was a 5000 CD pressing there would be a heck of a lot still left.In comparison with some obscure Jerry Goldsmith scores which sell out overnight, those 2 scores above should have sold out as well. For some reason JWs less famous scores, outside his SW and Indiana Jones type circle of fame, tend to stay in the warehouse a lot longer with few exceptions like Space Camp. And both FP and Midway didn't have official releases before...5,000 units might have been too much, but I wouldn't be surprised if the first 3,000 copies of FP sold out in a matter of days.
