What is your favorite obscure motif from Star Wars?

They are different!

I watched him as he reached up, and composed them...with his own dead hand.

Hiya, Johnny, it's your uncle Bingo. Time to pay the copyist.

But seriously...THROUGH THE FLAMES might be a variation of ROTJ, but they are different.

I thought the fanfares at the end of The Return of the Jedi and Through the Flames were different?

They are different, but they're the same...

To get to Through the Flames from The Return of the Jedi you:

  1. Double the speed
  2. Lift the 3rd note up a fifth
  3. Lower the 4th, 5th and 6th notes down a scale degree.

I have a suspicion that the idea behind it was to have the exact same motif in both instances, only Williams decided to shift the notes to make it easier to play for the brass (and make it easier on the ear given the quicker tempo). It's only a theory, though.

Has anybody mentioned the Giant Fish motif yet?

Didn't Fred Steiner ghostwrite those cues?

That's a variation on THE THRONE ROOM (unless you mean the end bit :)?).

I'm talking about the brass fanfare from that cue that also appears towards the end of "Fight With TIE Fighters".

Star Wars at its best   That one second when the falcon desperately faces the star destroyer since hyper drive failed (again).  The whole sequence is such a perfect blend of editing, score, sound (the falcon's failed hyper drive), directing, script, and acting.  Perfect SW moment.

It's believed that Fred Steiner only did "Superstructure Chase", which was mostly just made up of JW's music anyway.

For that cue I'd say Williams would have certainly put together a simple sketch referring to earlier manuscripts and offering a couple of musical 'patches', all by himself. How long could it take, two hours? It's not as if he had to rewrite a five minute long action setpiece in the midst of the recording sessions.

I like the victory fanfare from the end of Jabba's End and Through The Flames

I thought it was the same motif for a long time, but it's been pointed out they are different.

@Richard, can you post the Anakin/Sebulba moment you're talking about?  I'm an avid collector of twisted versions of character motifs. :D

Shmi's theme is my favorite, all the way! Anakin Is Free is one of my favorite tracks from The Phantom Menace. The pan flute solo and everything that follows it is so tender and beautiful!

I also like the Death Star theme a lot and wished it had appeared more, both in RotJ and in R1.

I also LOVE the Alliance Assembly theme. It deserves more appearances.
