p0llux 398
It's mind boggling how he found that ET adventure music. The amount of luck and detective work required. damn...and the crazy thing is nobody knows where it was recorded still. Unreal.
Popular Post Omen II 1,235
It is a rare treat to hear an interview where both the interviewer and the interviewee really know their onions; this is one such example. Alan 689
Amazing interview! Interesting to hear that he would like another go at Superman. I mean, it has been 11 years since the FSM release so there's really no harm in a re-issue if he's able to work with new hi-res transfers. I'd buy it in a heartbeat! crumbs 14,317
Didn't realise the Blue Box was based on such old scans either. What did he say, 2000? Imagine how much that could be improved with a modern scan! Though as he says, the main concern is just preserving the elements before they perish. Many of Williams' classic scores are now 4 decades old and we have no idea their level of preservation by all the various studios. I'll never take for granted the work that MM is achieving by future-proofing these elements for generations to come. Once
KittBash 282
Yes, seems to me the legend goes they found better source tapes for Superman even as the rhino set was coming out (which was based on generations removed sources). If memory serves they used the found tapes and transferred them for the dvds and used that better transfer for the blue box source as well. I’d love to hear what MM could get out of those tapes with a fresh transfers and his experience since. Im sure someone will be along to correct me shortly
Jay 37,367
I don't think those old transfers used for the old releases were even made from the original 1st gen elements, and they probably weren't done in 24bit/48khz (or 96khz) like they would be if done now. Hopefully something better can be found and transferred, or technology can improve the a fresh transfer of the same elements if that's all that's left. KittBash 282
http://filmscoremonthly.com/cds/detail.cfm?cdID=390 Quote Williams's music to Superman: The Movie has been released on several occasions, most recently on a 2CD set from Rhino (now out of print). That album, however, was reconstructed using secondary dubbing elements, as the six-track 35mm music masters were unearthed only afterwards. For this definitive presentation, the entire recording has been painstakingly remixed and remastered from that first-generation source, yielding the best sound quality ever. 1 but of course, I'd be up for a clean 24bit/48khz (or 96khz) transfer! Probably the Superman re-issue I've no clue but there must be something fairly significant to require a trip to London and the work to be done on this side of the pond. From the beginning of the article, surprised no one has mentioned this yet! Alan 689
Might the Potter scores be stored in the UK? Heyday Films are based in London and as the production company they might have the masters rather than WB. (I'm guessing without knowing the rights situation with the Potter scores - probably totally off)
Jay 37,367
Mike, or any other album producer, doesn't have to physically travel to were elements are stored to be able to work on them. Employees of the studio usually transfer them and then send over the digital files.
Alan 689
Which is why it's strange or at least interesting that he's in London doing the work this time. Producers don't usually have to travel but in this case Mike has.
Faleel 5,350
Perhaps he wasn't in London to work on it, perhaps that is just where he happened to be? (Going to a concert etc.) Though they probably would not have mentioned that if it wasn't important.

Jay 37,367
As far as I know Mike was in London for the 50th Annivery Dr Dolittle screening w/ Bricusse Q&A that he was a part of https://www.facebook.com/lalalandrecords/posts/10156099219383755 Quote Park Circus and Picturehouse are delighted to present a special 50th Anniversary screening of DOCTOR DOLITTLE [PG], along with a Q&A with Leslie Bricusse (who wrote the film’s original music, lyrics and screenplay) and Mike Matessino, film and music historian. The screening will be of the restoration, undertaken by Fox, of the original roadshow version of the film, in dazzling 4k digital. The film received nine Academy Award nominations in 1968, including Best Picture. https://www.facebook.com/events/141343743298811/ http://london.carpediem.cd/events/5247704-50th-anniversary-doctor-dolittle-plus-leslie-bricusse-q-a-at-picturehouse-central/ https://www.broadwayworld.com/westend/article/Leslie-Bricusse-Set-for-50th-Anniversary-DOCTOR-DOLITTLE-Event-in-London-20171121 I don't know why the text intro of the podcast connected his London visit to upcoming La-La Land titles *shrug* Incidentally, he's a part of another Dr Dolittle screening in LA this weekend with Bricusse & more: https://www.facebook.com/events/156268488426324 https://www.facebook.com/lalalandrecords/posts/10156381941953755 mahler3 and pete

rough cut 1,714
A fun interview. I don’t really want to buy Superman again - is it the curse (and blessing?) of being a JWfan? - but I’ll hardly be able to give it a pass if it comes along. phbart 609
MM is not physically in London, but via holographic image. Someone took a photo of him there. Here it is. Oh, that fellow in black is JW, btw.
