  1. To be honest, Dune: Part 2 is nothing more than just another epic theme park ride made with the latest effects. The best part of the movie, and I'm sure Zack Snyder* and Tarsem Singh will agree, is the fantastic, unique looking, hyper-stylized 'Arena scene', shot in odd B&W tones. I can only repeat what I've said after I watch the trailer and that is that the whole movie or even Villeneuve Dune series should have been filmed like that. That would have been top 10 material. *When Zackie was still a hyper-stylist, of course
  2. "To mark the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s (The Godfather, One From the Heart) seminal 1974 neo-noir thriller, The Conversation, Studiocanal has announced that a brand-new 4K restoration of the Palme D’Or winner will return to UK cinemas on 5 July 2024. The film will then be available to own via a special 2-disc 4K UHD Collector’s Edition and on digital from 15 July." "The Conversation has been scanned in 4K from the original camera negative, using a director-approved reference print as a color grading reference. The 5.1 sound mix created in 2000 by Walter Murch will be included, as will the original mono audio track. American Zoetrope restoration supervisor James Mockoski was involved in this work, which was approved by Coppola. The 2-disc UHD Collector’s Edition package (which is apparently all region) will include audio commentary with Coppola, a second commentary with editor Walter Murch, a Q&A with Walter Murch (filmed at Curzon Soho in 2017), a behind the scenes gallery, screen tests for Cindy Williams and Harrison Ford, Coppola script dictations, a 1973 interview with Hackman, an interview with composer David Shire by Coppola, 2 featurettes (Close-Up on The Conversation and Harry Caul’s San Francisco: Locations Then & Now), Coppola’s 1956 short film No Cigar, the film’s theatrical trailer, and the new 50th anniversary trailer. The packaging will also include a 64-page booklet with essays, the soundtrack on cassette tape, and a pair of posters with original artwork. You can see the opening packaging below ..." https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/050224-1500

  4. Is that about right, Richard?
  5. So far I only like Solyaris, even though Tarkovsky himself was not so happy with it. Last time I watched it, I saw a lot of Blade Runner in it, thematically that is. The film's ending is heartbreaking.
  6. Fallout: 4/10 (could have been 5/10 if it were not for the terrible finale) Ripley: 7/10 (could have been an 8/10, but just like the movie, the story becomes less interesting once ...
  7. That's weird, Richard, most real Kubrick fans call Spartacus not a Kubrick but a Kirk Douglas movie. It usually ends at the bottom of the list. That means your not a Kubrick fan, Richard, it's the only logical conclusion. Ah, I see you're a connoisseur! Eyes Wide Shut is so underrated!
  8. What most people have missed (because they only count the scares) is that androids in the Alien universe are sexually frustrated.
  9. If Star Wars was a flop in 1977, nobody today would be talking about it. It just would have been another Zardoz.
  10. 1. Alien (masterpiece in tone and design, a handbook for every one who wants to do sci-fi, changed cinema) 2. Aliens (it's a tense actioner, Cameron was smart not to copy Scott's movie, changed gaming) 3. Alien Resurrection (saved by Jeunet's caricuture Metal Hurlant style) 4. Alien Covenant (saved by the two Davids) 5. Prometheus/Alien3 (it's a tie for last place - want to throw foam bricks at both of them, both Scott and Fincher should be embarrassed) Who is your favorite Alien android? 1) Ash 2) Bishop 3) David
  11. Of course! And they have the box office gross to prove it! As we all know, the better the movie, the more money it makes (JWFan law n° 9).
