Yeah. Performances & make-up (esp. Roth, Bonham Carter and Giamatti), fantastic production design and cinematography and one of Elfman's best scores post-millennium. So what if Wahlberg has the charisma & acting chops of a soft ice, and the story has a few twist and turns and holes. It's not enough to make me dislike it, or even say it's a bad film!

Yeah, it's a pretty decent sequel. Furthermore, I'm one of the three people on the planet (of the apes) who also think Burton's film has a lot going for it.

Temple of Doom is celebrating 40 years in 2024
Thor replied to Edmilson's topic in General Discussion
It's disconcerting to think that he was four years YOUNGER than me at that point. I hate these reminders. For example that Dr. Grant in JURASSIC PARK is the same age as I am now. -
Nor did I. In fact, I hated it. But that wasn't Yeoh's fault.

Why? Of all the people not to like.... I think she's been good in basically everything she's been in.
-
Yes, some. The Goldsmithian elements, as mentioned before, and some big epic things (with choir and everything), and the return of MELODY in several instances. But you'll have to be patient about it; there are a lot of those chuggachugga RC-isms to wade through as well. If there's any album to be had here, it needs to be heavily playlisted.

Yeah, saw it this morning. It was rather excellent, actually. I went in with low expectations, so I was definitely pleasantly surprised. Great world building, good "journey" narrative, some intense setpieces, likeable central characters. The climax was perhaps a bit too on-the-nose, but nothing to whine about. Best Apes film since the 1968 original. Paesano's score had some very trite contemporary tropes scattered about, but also some lovely moments -- including references to Goldsmith's original. I need to listen to it on album first, but the best Apes score since Elfman's, I think (which I absolutely adore).

What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
Thor replied to Ollie's topic in General Discussion
Indeed. As I said over on FSM, you really can’t go wrong with Ilarramendi. Posted a lot of his stuff earlier in the thread. -

Star Wars Star Wars Trilogy: The Original Soundtrack Anthology turns 30!
Thor replied to Tallguy's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
It is! And THAT ONE falls into the 'almost' category mentioned in the other thread. -

Star Wars Star Wars Trilogy: The Original Soundtrack Anthology turns 30!
Thor replied to Tallguy's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
LOL! I've never been into that whole collector mentality myself. I mean, I collect John Williams soundtracks, but they're to be used, not treasured like some Gollum-like ring. Tear that foil! -

What scores have been ruined for you by their expansion?
Thor replied to GerateWohl's topic in General Discussion
Yes. I had a CD-R boot of the complete TOD once, and it almost ruined my entire appreciation of the score. Thank God I chucked it in the trash before it was too late, and I could start listening to my gorgeous Japanese OST import again, rebuilding my love of the score. As for 1941, I can only take so much swing and march music before I go completely bonkers, so the OST presents the exact right cut-off point at 39 minutes. Even that is stretching it. -
Will The Sugarland Express finally be released for its 50th Anniversary?
Thor replied to crumbs's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Yes, that's it. Thankfully, we did get a handful of Williams premieres out in this 'wild west' time. -
MORTAL ENGINES really grew on me the second time I watched it. Steampunk isn't easy to do; it can often come off as goofy (WILD WILD WEST, for example), but there's enough richness in the world of MORTAL ENGINES, I needed two attempts to get into it. But when I did, I really liked it. Underrated film.
